BRILLIANT "While some in the zine world decide it's destructive to talk a mainstream media that they don't respect and that doesn't respect them. others, in the zine tradition of sabotage, feed them misinformation. Dishwasher Pete...when asked to appear ...on 'Late Night with David Letterman'...agreed. Knowing, however, that nobody at the show had any idea what he looked like, he had the, fly an old friend from California to impersonate him." - Stephen Duncombe, "Notes from Underground", p. 144.
Letterman is reading a piece of paper to discover the title of the book, which is right in front of him. How silly.
It's weird to see Pete Jordan being actually funny (in a friendly way), while the crowd is still laughing at Letterman's sad attempts to bring him down. Even more sad how Letterman and this keyboard guy are talking about what difference it would make which person they would be talking to. Sounds like they can only bring up respect for the ones who have a job with high status.
just finished reading it... couldnt put it down, it is so good!! all these stupid audience members think that it is a joke, he is the real deal! so inspiring
As a long time dishwasher (no longer though, thank God yet I miss it) I also prefer older Hobarts. Not the newer ones with the conveyors, as falling utensils can easily prevent their working. I don't mind opening the door, feeling that rush of steam broadside you in the face and sliding out the tray manually. At first, the hot water and hot metal burns but that goes away fast. Maybe I'll get a night gig but it's easy to romanticize when you're not washing grease off your belly at 2 in the morn.
I jsut listened to a "this American Life" episode and it's an interview of Pete telling the story. (its before this letterman show took place) its good
Dave is a jerk--did he ever think that the reason Pete might not want to be on TV is because they made fun of him the whole time? He would've known if he actually read the whole book...
@bassgirl88 dear god relax. he was pretty nice, just joking around. he playfully mocked a bizarre situation then had a nice conversation. laughs were had, a book was promoted, everybody won.
Yes, there's certainly something wrong with this country when people veiw this and then comment that there is something wrong with this country... Dishwasher Pete should be an inspiration to everyone...
This guy's life is amazing. I am a long term thinker and I am always worried about the future - providing stability of life and worrying about prestige. But this guy threw all that out the window and did what he wanted to do. Hats off to him!!!
Letterman is a script reading womaniser and Pete is a dish master!

@bassgirl88 I don't think he was particularly hard on Pete. He's kind of a dick to everyone.
