Nothing really happened, it was all in the same area with no cars.

I think a decent amont of RAM and running on a 64-bit operating system helps a lot too, my clips generally save at around a minute long.

It was realistic driving physics or something like that, there was a bug in one of the older versions that caused old bashed up cars to bounce when you had a low framerate.
