ASCAP collects a royalty for Nancy Wilson when the song is played, but a person cannot buy the rights to play a song from ASCAP as you suggest. A person can purchase the rights to play a song from the actual owner of the music. Palin did not purchase the rights from Nancy Wilson. As such she had no rights to play the music if Nancy Wilson didn't want her to.

I'm really disappointed with Nancy Wilson - finding out she filed for divorce from Cameron Crowe after 20+ years. I remember some of her remarks around the time Almost Famous made a big hit - saying how she was so in love with Cameron and they were so happy together - bla-bla. I bought into it, thinking: "Wow, here is a rare woman... a genuine female musician who never let the fame go to her head, etc. Turns out she's just another typical boomer with the throw-away husband mentality. Sad.

You have a lot to learn about the industry. The song is registered through ASCAP, but Nancy Wilson owns the rights to the song. ASCAP collects a royalty for Nancy Wilson when the song is played, but a person cannot buy the rights to play a song from ASCAP as you suggest. A person can purchase the rights to play a song from the actual owner of the music. Palin did not purchase the rights from Nancy Wilson. As such she had no rights to play the music if Nancy Wilson didn't want her to.

As long as the RNC event is paying for a blanket license via ASCAP (the Performing Rights Org w. which Heart is affiliated), they also have the right to play the music publicly .it's the same method by which venues are authorized to play recorded music in between band sets.

I'm really disappointed with Nancy Wilson - finding out she filed for divorce from Cameron Crowe after 20+ years. I remember some of her remarks around the time Almost Famous made a big hit - saying how she was so in love with Cameron and they were so happy together - bla-bla.
