I'm a brit living in Nanjing and saw this machine the first time the other week. To be honest it didn't surprise me. And by China standards, it's quite humane. The crabs are kept cold so they sort of hibernate then they wake up when you get them out of the machine. Compared to the conditions that other live produce are kept in (i.e. fish and frogs and terrapins sitting in dirty water, sometimes with other dead animals in the same tank), this seems to be a step forward for China.
How on earth do you eat those things? Do they eat them raw, right out of the package? I would be to scared that it's going to snap my finger off. Or do they take them home and cook them? In that case, what would be the point of selling them in a vending machine?
And Chinese people wonder why the whole world hates them. HOW COULD it NOT cross their minds that this is outrageously cruel??? Its like they have no empathy gene.

@Quartrez This whole world is a cesspit. The wealthy filth exploit the poor, there is trafficking, torture, human & animal. There are animals skinned alive, baby dolphins & seals slaughtered along with the whales. I could carry on but I would rather continue to try and make a difference with writing letters, signing petitions, and GIVING DONATIONS to compassionates physically trying to help stop this! Presumably you do this? Considering you talk as if no-one else knows as much as you?

ALL bleeding hearts caring for these crabs ie: living things. Maybe consider the living salad that died for your meal. Pointing fingers? Maybe you have NO clue as to how meat is processed in a slaughter house. How they treat cows and pigs before they're either electrocuted or nail-gunned to death dropping dead in their own filth. Think of that during your next fast food burger! I think some here have more of a problem with Chinese people than you do that vending machine.

Do you want to be the pot or the kettle...or are we splitting hairs with consciousness and brains....Is that what constitutes living or anything that eats and functions...And btw meat being processed is well after the animal is killed so you may want to reword that to how the animal is slaughtered to get the meat, which would make the crabs much more humane...

I'm guessing most of these people take it home to cook. What is the whole point of having a vending machine if they aren't going to eat it right away. Isn't Nanjing by the sea. I remember when I was in Shantou, Guangdong there was a market place selling sea food every corner you turned.

@JamesG82 I'm not saying everyone has to become vegan (it's not for everyone, no one should feel pressured into it), but it's not very fair to say that we aren't healthy, either. I've been a vegan for 11 years - half my life - and I'm as healthy as a horse. There's tons of alternate protein sources. Don't bash it based on common misconceptions, yeah? Because whoever you pray to also made us smart enough to create substitutions.

I'm a brit living in Nanjing and saw this machine the first time the other week. To be honest it didn't surprise me. And by China standards, it's quite humane. The crabs are kept cold so they sort of hibernate then they wake up when you get them out of the machine. Compared to the conditions that other live produce are kept in (i.e. fish and frogs and terrapins sitting in dirty water, sometimes with other dead animals in the same tank), this seems to be a step forward for China.

I am pretty sure they have inspections daily at all their veining machines to make sure people aren't buying dead crabs! They have people who rotate the crabs around, so you're not getting old crab!
