  • really really good

  • good job. we just had a talent show at my school and a girl sung defying gravity.

  • I personally think you did an incredible job with one of the most difficult songs to sing. I am a huge fan of Wicked and will give props to someone whom definitely is shooting that high. You go girl :)

  • YOU'RE BRILLIANT!!! be careful though...it can srsly screw ur vocal cords over if u sing it wrong

  • I would get her a good vocal coach and go more of a opera route because she's got the voice for it. Her vibrato is a little too strong for Broadway, but opera would fit her well. Make sure to not let her "scream" at the top of her chest voice like she does in the last part of the song, she can seriously damage her vocal chords and in turn ruin her chances of being great when she gets older. But for 11, her voice is very mature, but she has a lot of room to grow and find her own voice :)

  • This. Is. AMAZING.

    I LOVE YOUR VOICE. :D

  • That little girl did AWESOME! All the people with the negative comments....Let me see you sing that and get as close to the notes as she did.

  • Amazing???? professional I mite add :)

  • Best 11 year old version of wicked ever... excellent voice...keep training

  • You're great! You just need a decent singing coach for a few weeks or something, so then you don't go into the whining, like some girls, but you're great!

  • she's 11 years old? I wouldn't know that, you can't hear it from her voice

  • Let me guess Colbs Don Ho's?? haha

  • GREAT JOB. I would recommend singing your high notes in your lighter register, or head voice. It really sounds like you're pushing carrying your chest voice up that high. Just a suggestion.

  • Wow, for 11 years old I'm impressed. Good luck in your future m'dear! =)

  • Thats well good for an 11 year old , well done bub:)

  • Great Potential, She'll do great once she develops the use of her head voice. i.e. for the parts where she needs to not belt out and use more control.

  • really good just work on ur stage apearence u have 2 be the song 2 actually sing it

  • Good vocal potential. In addition to working on pitch and your voice also work on your stage presence. You've got a lot of confidence, but you need to figure out what to do with your hands and face. Part of what you can do to do that well is to understand your song and what you're actually saying. Don't just sing the song, BE the song. :)

  • a little flat on notes, straining your voice, but a lot of potential.

  • u sang a little bit through your nose...watch out for that but you have a fantastic voice!

    Keep it up!

  • some of the high e's were hard to hit, at least i think it was a high e, but its easy to work on! very impressive! :) strong ending too!

  • Yes there is a ton of potential!!!! That being said, just take it slowly, singing in things like this all the time at such a young age will turn this voice into a voice with a giant warble. As she gets older, the passaggio or "break" will settle into a more permanent place and she will have to learn to negotiate the transition. Singing things like this for long periods of time and for competitions can be extremely detrimental to the voice of a young child.

  • Yeah. Definitely amazing.

  • ur 11?! wow. very nice. xx ignore nagative comments. you are very good. x

  • oh dear jesus this was dreadful! Yea she needs a vocal coach! in the worst way! A belt is no good if she is cracking, going sharp, giong flat, cant reach the note. Her vibrato is totally fake and not coming from breath support. ack!

  • Well, can you sing any better? I mean really, I though she was really good and not-as-good at points, but you don't hear me attacking her like this. Unless you upload yourself singing this better than this amazing little girl, then would you so kindly be quiet!

  • Directed toward mikeythedancer.

  • Give her a break. In this she was just 11. Anyways, she's a genius now. I should know, I've been in a show with her. She's amazing and if you heard her now, you'd put your foot in your mouth. *peace*

  • well can you do any better?

  • if you are so bitter, why bother to comment. this girl is 11 and has so much potential. why are you trying to crush it? care for yourself and give yourself the points to work on. Way out of order.

  • holy crap, never heard an 11 year old with a belt

  • sorry, just not good. out of tune too much, and tone problems THROUGHOUT.

  • I disagree. I mean there were some rough patches, but she's amazing. And also, she's just a kid.

You just need a little more emotion.

  • 1). Some parts that u belted out wer pitchy while others u ended the note 2 soon which makes it loose its effect on your audience.

2). You have a great voice but you we're flat at some parts.

3). You missed your riff in 2:48.

4). Breathe in before you belt out so that u cud get ur voice directly frm the diaphragm making the note making it sound purer.

Sry if I noticed a lot. Im a broadway per4mer & a voice trainer as well so I pretty much knw my wy arnd d theatre. U hv gr8 potential. Keep it up.

  • OMG!! Psycho... She was 11. Just the good stuff would be good. You don't have to post, you missed your riff in 2: 48.

  • your talent is obvious and this video does show it. you do need to be careful, however... with songs like "defying gravity", they can really hurt your vocal chords at such a young age. excellent performance, just keep that in mind. another thing, your stage presence could use some work. working with an acting coach is sometimes helpful to determine how the song should be "played out" on stage.

you have skills, and i look forward to hearing more of you in the future.

  • Really good sense of pitch and text- I would make sure this singer gets a decent voice teacher to make sure she doesn't fall into the "Annie" young lady singer trap an hurt her vocal chords- songs like defying gravity, although awesome, can be dangerous for young and ambitious voices and shady technique can be carried over into adulthood and take a long time to correct. Vocal health first! Even so, really nice.

  • Thank you very much! I do have a wonderful voice teacher now. You may have heard of her -- Kristian Lei ??

You can listen to some newer performances at user/ColbyBenson

  • you won right if you didnt that contest was rigged

  • amaaaazing keep it up

  • those last few seconds were actually broadway standard!

  • she has and amazing voice!!

and btw where did u get your dress? is it cute.

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! keep it up I Just heard this song a little while ago and am obssed with it i love it. your voice is amazing!

  • you have a great canvas. work on you blocking and that vibrato is a little strong, but after that you are freaking amazing

  • im impressed

    at 11

if you keep singing and working itll pay off

    for real

  • your really good,

i sang this song along time ago,

but your using your "big voice" on the low notes, and not as big of a voice on the higher notes, its hard but you need to try and keep a contrast :) x

  • are you an actress, really great job on this btw

  • if you work as hard as you're talented you'll be wonderfull! nice job ;)

  • breathtaking....

  • Good, work on head voice a little otherwise nice!

  • Omg I wish I could sing as good as her she is wonderful I hope she won!!!!!!!

  • You are very talented. :)

  • where did u get this karaoke? :)

    thanks <3 .

  • Good job... Here's some constructive criticism....LOSE THE BOOTS!

  • Hey, I hought those boots were cool at the time! Are you from Hawaii too?

  • oh hey your from Hawaii no way

i use to live there might move back what island are you from?

  • Eleven?

    Wow, I'm really impressed.

    Lovely job for that age.

  • also work on dynamics, like alternating your sound levels. work into crescendo's etc.

  • You need a work on high notes. try different excercises.

    little pitchy in some places.

keep practicing and you will improve.

    you have great potential.

i myself am a vocalist and i no how hard some notes can be to reach. but you will get there.

    =]

    well done!

  • wow thats an incredibly hard song to sing

and u did a really good job

    easpecially for 11!

    grats <3

    :]

  • a little pitchy and holding some notes a little too long but very pretty voice

  • Good Job. One little thing though, you need to keep your notes clean. You dont have to try to sound like Idina Menzel (you will be just as good one day though). Dont streach your notes out too much and you will sound so much better. Keep on singing

    Meg

  • Brillant!

  • omg that was soooo good. especially for an 11 year old .. man i almost cried.

a little pitchy but hey shes 11.

    BUT IT WAS AMAZING!!

  • that was REALLY impressive for an 11 year old :D

  • Impressive...I am actually currently studying music and there are few things you need to work on...mainly, it is confidence in the higher notes, you have an amazing tone, especially when you sing lower and from your diaphram...you lose the sincere tone when you shoot for the falsettos in the higher notes that are a long reach...all of that will develop over time, excellent job at singing my absolute favorite song from BROADWAY!

  • good job, great potential, watch for several pitch problems

  • see ya on broadway kid

  • yeah... never tilt the head back. you are great for an 11 year old girl and seriously i think you will go far. she can ALREADY hit those high notes...

    wow.

you go girl. i`ll see you in new york.

  • some pitch problems but if she worked on it a little more it would have been perfect!

  • some pitch problems but pretty good for a 11 yr old

  • it sounds fake like ur trying to sound older than u arre

  • oh and i just thought about this but Idina Menzel started belting when she was around 12 and now she has nodes, but that's what can happen if you belt too soon.

  • great job! your voice sounds very mature for your age, but i do have some suggestions. don't tilt your head back, it stretches your vocal chords and limits your breath. and like what other people said, it is dangerous to belt before your voice has fully matured (which isn't until about 19 or 20) so just watch out but very good job overall.

  • just to ask, if you belt around 16/17 do you think that could really damage your voice still?

  • yes it would damage your voice. Because while your voice is maturing your vocal chords have to move to their proper place, but it you cause any strain to them during that time, then it can affect your voice for the rest of your life. Before full vocal maturity it is important to build a strong head voice, and if you have a strong head voice then your belt will be stronger as well.

  • great job

  • really good! excellent ahahaaaaa at the end! did she win?

  • No... not this time. However, she sang the same song for a competition this past Saturday and got a standing ovation from two of the three judges (one of which is Danny Couch, a famous vocalist and musician - played for years with Don Ho). That was really cool. Oh, and she won!

  • lots of potential

  • i tinhk u get 9 out if 10

    great job

  • your sooo goood i love you.... ahahahahah

  • vry good for eleven, but as someone else said, be careful how much you push yourself for those long notes at a young age. some sounded a little forced, and this can cause injury which will hinder you in future years. i liked it though :)

  • not bad at all!!!!

  • luv ur dress, pretty good singer. i would love to sing defying gravity in a singing contest because i love singing and...man it would be awesome=) good job

  • I heard thast it is dangerous to push it when you voice is not matured so be careful.

  • to much vibrato and then your voice couldn't handle some of it it seemed, and act more but for 11 this is INCREDIBLE!!

  • plus, cool riff at the end =)=)

  • u sound great and i LOVE ur dress!!!!(lol) but yeah at the time it sounds like ur more of a mezzo soprano but still sounds great! Good luck with singing =)

  • wow she is absolutely amazing so much talent at such a young age

  • Hi! It's pretty cool, congratulations! Maybe only one thing: you should practice only to make your head voice stronger, so make your full register more 'steady'. Otherwise, i'm singing 'back to sleep' same like you :)))

    Kisses from Hungary!

  • Her voice does need to mature more and she needs extra work on her higher range because she isn't a natural soprano. This song was written for a mezzo-soprano and she's more of an alto. As her voice matures she will be able to sing higher and practice will give her a fuller vocal range.

  • I am more of a soprano than an alto. Check out my other postings. (especially Summertime) Also, I have a more recent posting of defying gravity. I'm a year older and handle the notes much better.

  • I don't think she should be singing these kinds of songs so young. These are belter songs for older people. I'd say wait a while until her passagio(break from chest voice to head voice) is smoothed out so she can do some of the higher notes easier. Other than that, she was pretty good.

  • I agree with that. Besides, this is a difficult song to sing

  • I'd just say warm up a lot before going on stage and work on the higher end of your range but I'm sure that will work out as you grow up and your voice matures. You have a great voice and just that special energy. Great!

  • Good job Colby! you do need to work on not straining your voice so much. Your voice is powerful but you're trying to belt the song out so much that your pitch wanders. You have a microphone to amplify your voice so don't belt as much and strain your voice. Keep up with the vocal coach and singing lessons! I take vocal lessons too and I know how important it is to sing loud enough but not too loud to strain my voice. Keep up the good work and maybe we'll be seeing each other on Broadway!

  • Colby has greatly improved since this initial posting. She has recently appeared on Hawaii Stars (One of Hawaii's longest running and currently, the number one rated locally produced television shows in the State) and won 1st place. Watch her entire performance by going to the Hawaii Stars website. Colby is a very talented and well-rounded young teen who really shows true potential to be something really big.

The best to you Colby!.......You Go Girl!

  • Pretty amazing. If she keeps it up, she may end up PLAYING Elphaba.

  • That would be a dream come true!

  • She is pitchy. But she's 11! Amazing job for an 11-year-old!

  • you're very pretty! this is a really tough song to sing... I love the "Well if that's love!"- so much spunk

  • She is very good I sang that same song at a competion one time but not as good as her! How did she get backround music without Glinda in the song someone tell me!

  • My dad cut the music for me. He's the best!

  • colby's fantastic so don't you dare jugde her wildfire, shes only a kid and your trying to critisize her thats pretty rude you should not try to critisize her if you are not a on broadway and, yes i agree that you were pretty pitchy wild fire and if you thought colby was pitchy it was because its not very easy to get the sound perfect with the

  • speakers from stage people screaming and talking, so please keep your comments to your self

i love you colby, see you saturday and good luck

  • To all of you saying it's pitchy- that song is VERY, VERY hard to sing. She IS young and did and AMAZING job of it.

  • You are so good!! Even if you do have like a COUPLE of notes that are pitchy you definently have an excellent start!! Good luck to you and I hope to be the first person to buy tickets to your concert and the first to buy your CD when it comes out!!

  • I LOVE her "aaaAAHHhhHHhh!". I bet she's gonna be a GREAT powerhouse when she gets older!

  • I lied... ALOT of pitchy spots. She doesn't have alot of control over her voice but like I said.. she's got plenty of time to learn.

  • Well you gotta start somewhere!!

  • wildfire she's much better than YOU!!!

  • for someone her age....she is excellent. shut up

  • wildfiretgh...i watched your vid of you singing Defying Gravity along with the origional recording (which is not good training for your voice by the way) and it is very pitchy indeed, so now who are you to judge??

  • I wasn't judging. I was giving constructive cristism. There is no need for you to be rude at all. And mine wasnt pitchy, but nice try.

  • yes it f-ing was!!! we'd be able to tell if you would actually try singing it without the origional. lots of people sound good if they sing along with the origional. you were VERY pichy. back off.

  • She's got some pitchy spots but, she's young. She'll learn.

  • I have absolutely zero interest in the play. You, however, are very good. A couple of high notes you did seem a bit unsure, but you say you've been working with a voice coach, so that's probably fixed now. I would not be surprised to hear more about you in the future. Keep up the good work.

  • This sounded fantastic!xxx

  • Thanks!!

  • very good

  • Wow, that's pretty good. I am doing the same song in chorus at my school.

  • holy crap she is 11 if i only heard her voice i would definatly have been suprised. The only thing i think she needs to work on is hitting the high notes and being comfortable about doing so. i love the sass in "if thats love"

  • she is very good though sorry for my first feedback. i have been singing longer too! but u are great!! omg that was awsome after it was finished i guess u are better then me.

  • i am 11 too and i can sing even better

  • Hmmm... she's only 11 and can sing like THAT??? This girl has a broadway voice!

  • shes gonna strain her voice by belting every note. I dont know a lot about singing but i know about belting.

  • Yeah, I know. You should have heard it when I first started learning it. I knew this song was challenging and that's why chose it. I've been working with a vocal coach for some time now and can handle the notes better without straining. Plus, I'm a year older too. You can click on rdjsc2f and see more of my songs. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Colby

  • Could anyone ever say anything that wasn't positive about this girl. That's really good for 11... Voice is already so strong.

  • again i love it....wonderful job..but keep your tone up atllie and try not to forse some notes..but I again loved it

  • defying4266, I LOVE your page!!! Thank you so much!! I thought I'd never get a chance to see the show!

  • You have certainly got a great voice. Keep it up.

  • Thanks! I appreciate all the nice comments. It gives me hope that I just might make it as a singer one day.

  • wow i can't believe your only 11... good job you definatly have talent and i can see you going far!

  • darn good for a young girl. so pretty and a nice voice!

  • Thanks!

  • It was really good for an eleven year old. I think shes straining her voice A LOT though. SHe needs to stop belting until a vocal coach tells her how to do it properlly. She won't be able to sing in 10 years if she keeps belting like that. Seriously I am telling her for her safety. I think she has a lot of potential but she needs to stop straining her voice.

  • Thanks for the concern. I'm 12 now and have been working with a really good voice teacher. If you get a chance please check out my newer stuff and tell me what you think.

  • wow if you keep praticing you can go places.keep it up and maybe sometime in the fiture you your self can be singing this song green and really flying

  • Defying4266,

I would love to be green and singing this song! ..But I'd be happy to be the third ensemble girl in the back too!

  • its good. the "TRYYY" (followed be "defying gravity") seem stressed. just work on air and u'll be even better. keep it up. feel it!!

  • WalidC,

Thanks, I'm just now learning how important breathing is when I sing.

  • girl put that arm down....they are called "motivated movements" not throw your arm in the air every word

  • mikeyboindaph,

I've been really working on getting rid of my "floating" arm. I don't know why I do that!

  • At least she made her own somewhat! Some girls try to sound exactly like Idina on the CD!

  • yeah that was really really good.

  • Whoa!!! 11 years old?! No freaking way!!! That's awesome!

  • Wow, she is amazing!

  • wow. she is good for her age.
