@astiltner1 Enjoy the time in which you are born in. Accept it`s limitations and tragedy. That`s what our community did in the 1970`s and 1980`s. And make it a time you`ll never forget. It will keep you in good company for life.
@jstjmy5 YES IT was, and lives on here..in Videos at least, but really I was there *age 22 and lived Off Polk..(the Other Castro) too shy to be in Castro! But sure DANCED Every night and day and LOVED those days! ♥ I may have danced with you! lol
I met Sylvester at the Copa in Fort Lauderdale in 1979. He was a class act. He called me over to buy me a drink and had his entourage with him. A little nervous because I was a kid and didn't know his intentions. He couldn't have been more gracious and charming. Rest In Peace my friend.
@simonsez0800 - Izora died in 2004 at the age of 62 from congestive heart failure. Sylvester James died in 1988 at the age of 41 from complications due to AIDS. Patrick Cowley died in 1982 at the age of 32 from the same cause, being one of the very earliest of AIDS-related deaths when it was still known by the name of GRID. ("Gay Related Immuno Deficiency" - the name AIDS entered common use only after he had died)
Oh baby, if you were there you'd have felt as honored to have been a part of an ERA as those that are still here to talk about it! TOTAL FREEDOM........... "C'monanddance"
I grew up with Sylvester in San Francisco.."IF YOU WANNA FUNK" is my favorite (I got in a fight on that song, in Different Strokes, with a badboy name Luther). The first time I met him was at a drug store at Church & Market, next to Safeway- he came in off a Moped with a full lenght mink coat on looking for push pins, he found them, while I found an album of him to sign!- "He said make sure you pay for that".I won the fight and eventually became friends with Sylvester.
@alansidneyholt I'm glad Prince would cover this now largely unknown, but fucking awesome, dance song. I would be willing to bet that most would think it's Princes' song. Sylvester is primarily remembered by those of us of the time, but it would be great for a new generation to discover how much energy his songs give.
First there are many things I love about this video, most of all thank you for includeing my dear friend and Men Alive Member (Orange County Gay Men's Chorus) My dear pal Lt. Daniel Choi, he is the korean cute guy on a car being approached by a great woman. You have many pioneer men here, Sylvester, harvey, Daniel Choi. Thanks for shareing this great video, Daniel its Gabriel Carabes from Men Alive Chorus we love everything you do for our, your community and the rights of humanity, love ya
The gays had Key West in 1978, I was there. Divine also lived there and Sylvester came to visit Divine regularly. We basically had the island to ourselves, it was a huge party. The clubs would play this song constantly when he was in town, and he would be out on the dance floor with the rest of us. On one of these visits, Sylvester walked out of the club drunk with Divine and started singing Mighty Real walking down street, with Divine dancing. The huge crowd went ape shit. Oh, those memories!

@YouCanSayIt I am thankful for the fun times but more then anything else, I am grateful that this brother found true peace and joy before passing into eternity.... He seemed really contented at the end and had found a real purpose when he turn to Jesus Christ in faith for salvation. Thank God for all that He does because He is good and merciful to anyone who seeks Him
