  • very helpful, confirms my doubts upon replacing my passenger tie rods and gives me something to test the driver's side with!

  • I thought they only stood firm for a few thousand miles ... anyhow mines drop like that too and I have a clunk I think is coming from the rack , I checked the inners and cant see movement in them I have a video of it . may need a new rack.

  • @jasmats They should still be firm.. even after a while.. When they flop - they are done.

  • @danjreed that is not how to test an inner tie rod, jack up the car have some one shake the tire back and forth (not up and down) while you look for loosness from the inner and outer tie rods

  • @wgbelcher lol - ok then. They were loose, I was only showing HOW loose they were.

  • your awesome for this

  • could this cause steering wheel vibrations?

my tires are new and balanced

  • @khalilmkokash

Does it happen when you brake..? Or just at all times?

  • @danjreed it happens all the time but is worse when i brake

  • @khalilmkokash - check your brake rotors for warpage, replace or cut them.

  • @danjreed i happens all the time but is worse when i brake

  • can anyone tell me how to tell the difference TRW vs ZF steering rack?

  • ZF is on vr6s and it has a waffle design. if you go to germanautoparts . com and just click whatever car you have and itll just give you the right parts

  • wow. thanks man.

  • A good piece of knowledge. Thanks.

  • ohhhh...thank you sir!!!!!!just wht I was lookingfor.your the man.....

  • Yo, Mr Reed, you should put your DIY vids on metacafe. They pay you once you've reached so many views. There is one guy on there (kipkay) that has made almost $200k in the last 3 yrs just from random DIY vids.

  • can't you just tighten the other side?

  • Hey Dan, does this test apply to all cars in general or is it specific to only VW's? My inner tie rod is flappy as well on my Nissan and my steering is feeling a bit loose.

  • needs viagra

  • hawt

  • This saved me. I was only gonna replace the outer on a 94 geo metro and after watching the video I realized the inner was also bad (I also did the thumbs down after testing it, lol).

It took a few weeks to get the parts (got a new clean boot kit, too), but the alternative would be much worse (aka having the steering wheel lose control on the interstate). Thanks very much.

  • Glad I could help!

  • hey so when it remains in its position it means its still good? and when if falls down it means it needs to be replaced?

  • Yes!

  • when i go at a speed of 50km and up n i turn side to side it feels like the cars slices like a snake lol do u think the inner tie rod is worn tanx

  • Could be,,, I would also check tires and wheel bearings.

  • Worlds greatest test.

I think its worth an Academy Award.

Tie Rods here I come, Thanks Dan.
