This rendition of this song is absolutely exquisite and utterly beautiful. Falsetto not falsetto, falsettone, reinforced falsetto or whatever... this sound is the right for this aria... again Sublime!
I heard Mr. Vanzo sing Werther at the Opera Comique in the early '70's. He was in total command of his instrument and made music in every bar he sang; formidable.
I learned about Alain Vanzo by this song! He can do no wrong with his singing -perfect falsetto - glorious diction and lovely interpretation....many tenors sing it too loud!
This was recommend to me by a operatic guru and I had no idea what a powerful rendition . Alain is fabulous - I wish i had been able to hear him earlier

Vanzo sang so very beautifully. His masterpiece, for me, is the Lakmé recording with Sutherland. In their first duet, when he sings "Oublier que je t'ai vue?" and later "C'est le Dieu de la jeunesse," it is perfect singing. The tone is boyish, sweet, romantic, with a perfect French almost-nonchalance that is enchanting. You listen just as Lakmé hears it, intoxicated (It is also one of the most hauntingly beautiful tunes in opera).
Magnificent rendition of an unimaginably difficult aria. Thanks for posting the score. The difficulty is only seen, never heard, because Vanzo solves everything with perfect technique. That is the greatest art form, to make it so that the listener would never know where the difficulties are.
well the best thing about not being an expert on music techniques or notes, tones, falsettos or not!! is that i can fully enjoy the beautyness of this song...
it is a beautiful melody indeed! and you guys should enjoy it as it is!!!
Head voice (in the La) not a falsetto. Nevertheless, the unique version with complete voce in maschera is the Kraus` one. Of course his french is not perfect because he is not French. Alain Vanzo speak french for obvious reason. Gigli also use all along the aria the head voice. Try to make this LA with voce in maschera. That is heroic.
god the falsetto debate gets boring, as though there as an arbitrary rule that should be adhered to without intelligence. The question need only be, is it beautiful? And in the case of Vanzo, the answer is surely yes.
@amballa False. This is falsetto. Undeniable change in vocal coloring and tone on the high notes, with fairly standard dynamics. Unmistakable falsetto.
This music MUST be taken at dotted quarter note = 60, otherwise it loses its otherworldly, sustained mystical quality; the tempo is perfect here! Nicely sung, but I prefer Nicolai Gedda and Alfredo Kraus.
I found this song on a rented VHS tape titled "Opéra Imaginaire," which contains a number of famous operatic songs set to animation (think of Disney's "Fantasia," with a lot more variety). Released in 1993 for TV, evidently. Recommended!
Great to have the background info, text, translation, and music for viewing. A well thought out package doing justice to a lovely performance of this beautiful music. Thank you for sharing.
I love this so much more than the recording from "The Man Who Cried" soundtrack. In fact I love it more than any other recording I have listened to on youtube. Bravo Alain Vanzo.
Could someone help me please. This song (probably not this particular singer) is used often in the soundtrack of a French movie the title of which I forgot. It takes place in WW2 France and the protagonist is a professional cyclist who helps the Resistance by cycling up and down the country or something like that...
Does anyone know the title of this movie and who the performer of "Je crois " in the film might be? Thanks in advance everybody!!!
Hi there - I expect you have been told by now that the film you want is Laissez Passer. I too thought this song in the film while the young film director is cycling to his wife - was just amazing. The singer though was Tino Rossi not Alain Vanzo. I've bought the film now - for £5 as i cannot find a cd of Tino Rossi singing this song though it is on the film.
Vanzo pitches this just right. Sensitive, yearning, haunting. This rates with Kraus, even rates with Gigli's great version from 1925. Was Vanzo ever better?
@PihaSandDunes Beniamino Gigli's rendition of the aria is beautifully sung and interpreted, but it is sung in Italian and his costume in Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" has nothing to do with Bizet's "Les Pecheurs de Perles".
I've been listening to several versions of this aria. Finally I get to see the actual score and proper rendition. Although I'm not an expert on music, I can tell how simple the melody is and how complicated it can turn out to be at the "hands" (read vocal chords) of the wrong tenor. Thanks for this contribution to a long dispute about how this piece should be sung.

Agree. Alain Vanzo's version is my favourite too.
Watched "The Man Who Cried" movie last night and this song plays throughout. (Christina Ricci, Cate Winslet, John Turturro, Johnny Depp)
