  • This rendition of this song is absolutely exquisite and utterly beautiful. Falsetto not falsetto, falsettone, reinforced falsetto or whatever... this sound is the right for this aria... again Sublime!

  • The way he goes crescendo to that high note and then lets it float piano is just out of this world. What mastery! Wonderful music

  • I heard Mr. Vanzo sing Werther at the Opera Comique in the early '70's. He was in total command of his instrument and made music in every bar he sang; formidable.

  • This is like floating mid air...gives you moments of absolutely tranquility and then, u hear the whispers of God

  • I learned about Alain Vanzo by this song! He can do no wrong with his singing -perfect falsetto - glorious diction and lovely interpretation....many tenors sing it too loud!

  • This was recommend to me by a operatic guru and I had no idea what a powerful rendition . Alain is fabulous - I wish i had been able to hear him earlier

  • ..Divine...!!!

  • @Doing HOMEWORK

  • Does 'nuit enchanteresse' mean 'enchanting night' (as per mushikaya) or 'night enchantress'?

  • @myutub3 oui !

  • Le style, le phrasé, la respiration,.... Tout est parfait! On touche ici au sublime...!!!

  • hey guys, i have a question ,did he use Falsetto?

  • @RinMido I mean at the highest notes

O nuit enchanteresse! Charmant souvenir!

  • I still believe I'm hearing Hidden under the palm trees Her tender and loud voice Like a chant of wood pigeons Oh enchanting night Divine rapture Oh charming memory Crazy exhilaration, soft dream In the light of the stars I still believe I see her Half opening her long veil In the warm winds of the evening Oh enchanting night Divine rapture Oh charming memory Crazy exhilaration, soft dream Charming Memory

  • buona interpretazione ma kraus è mille miglia lontano!

  • Vanzo sang so very beautifully. His masterpiece, for me, is the Lakmé recording with Sutherland. In their first duet, when he sings "Oublier que je t'ai vue?" and later "C'est le Dieu de la jeunesse," it is perfect singing. The tone is boyish, sweet, romantic, with a perfect French almost-nonchalance that is enchanting. You listen just as Lakmé hears it, intoxicated (It is also one of the most hauntingly beautiful tunes in opera).

  • Beautiful!

I listened to this peice and to other performances after a year again, this one is so distinguished.

Alain Vanzo has made a briliant performance, genious, because it undeniably penetrates my heart and my soul. my eyes can't stop weeping sometimes.

    merveilleux, merci beaucoup.

  • I just watched the film 'The man who cried' and fell in love with this tune, so glad I could find out about it and hear it here.

  • His control over dynamics are so insanely good.

  • Lovely singing.TY c for posting

  • Simply beautiful.

    Merci Alain Vanzo

  • This could make stones cry.

  • so beautiful

  • Magnificent rendition of an unimaginably difficult aria. Thanks for posting the score. The difficulty is only seen, never heard, because Vanzo solves everything with perfect technique. That is the greatest art form, to make it so that the listener would never know where the difficulties are.

  • I love this version, very similar to David Hobson's, but can't find his on youtube, beautiful

  • so emotional. <3

  • this song placed my mind and geart in a placee never placed before and I loved it

  • @nimhify also my body feels different XD

  • well the best thing about not being an expert on music techniques or notes, tones, falsettos or not!! is that i can fully enjoy the beautyness of this song...

it is a beautiful melody indeed! and you guys should enjoy it as it is!!!

  • @causticdieg0 You can enjoy being a music expert too, my friend. Knowledge is not a barrier but an infinte path.

  • Head voice (in the La) not a falsetto. Nevertheless, the unique version with complete voce in maschera is the Kraus` one. Of course his french is not perfect because he is not French. Alain Vanzo speak french for obvious reason. Gigli also use all along the aria the head voice. Try to make this LA with voce in maschera. That is heroic.

  • god the falsetto debate gets boring, as though there as an arbitrary rule that should be adhered to without intelligence. The question need only be, is it beautiful? And in the case of Vanzo, the answer is surely yes.

  • Only a French tenor can sing it like this, fabulous

  • I am singing a lot when I am taking my shower.

  • grasias mil

  • one word: falsetto

  • @TheInimitableKaka

no, not at all. Head voice, but not falseto... as it should be. very fragile and soft...

  • @amballa False. This is falsetto. Undeniable change in vocal coloring and tone on the high notes, with fairly standard dynamics. Unmistakable falsetto.

  • the best song ever, thank you very much, I have heard it alllllllll day today. Magnific.

  • indefectiblemente lloro

  • One of the deepest songs ive heard...

  • how not to cry while listening to this masterpiece?

  • Love the way you edited this wonderful aria..

    grazie !

  • Yes, thank you ... it is the best version I ever heard.

  • very beatiful

  • Breath-taking. Meltingly beautiful.

  • This music MUST be taken at dotted quarter note = 60, otherwise it loses its otherworldly, sustained mystical quality; the tempo is perfect here! Nicely sung, but I prefer Nicolai Gedda and Alfredo Kraus.

  • dolcezza, rêve, simplicity, elegance, musicality in the song of the young fisherman. Just copy him and stop hysterically screaming or suffering.

  • I have the Vanzo/Bacquier version on the opera on CD - just superb. But I never paid enough attention to this aria until now.

  • J'adore ce thème !

Mille mercis pour votre apport !

    Thank you for posting !

  • Check out Beniamino Gigli's version

  • This is possibly the most beautiful song I've ever heard. Wow. Just... wow.

  • is there a one where a little girl sings it

  • is there a one where a little girl sings it

  • One of the lovelier tenor voices.........

  • Che cosa meravigliosa...sublime!!!

  • I found this song on a rented VHS tape titled "Opéra Imaginaire," which contains a number of famous operatic songs set to animation (think of Disney's "Fantasia," with a lot more variety). Released in 1993 for TV, evidently. Recommended!

  • Better than Placido.

  • @alanespinney Agree!

  • @alanespinney, every one is much, but much better than Domingo, specially in this beautiful aria!

  • Great to have the background info, text, translation, and music for viewing. A well thought out package doing justice to a lovely performance of this beautiful music. Thank you for sharing.

  • vanzo alain est le super grand pere

  • I love this so much more than the recording from "The Man Who Cried" soundtrack. In fact I love it more than any other recording I have listened to on youtube. Bravo Alain Vanzo.

  • Absolument magnifique. Merci, civileso.

  • Could someone help me please. This song (probably not this particular singer) is used often in the soundtrack of a French movie the title of which I forgot. It takes place in WW2 France and the protagonist is a professional cyclist who helps the Resistance by cycling up and down the country or something like that...

Does anyone know the title of this movie and who the performer of "Je crois " in the film might be? Thanks in advance everybody!!!

  • @madaboutvoice

Hi there - I expect you have been told by now that the film you want is Laissez Passer. I too thought this song in the film while the young film director is cycling to his wife - was just amazing. The singer though was Tino Rossi not Alain Vanzo. I've bought the film now - for £5 as i cannot find a cd of Tino Rossi singing this song though it is on the film.

  • sublissime !

  • I must say, that is the coolest thing ever! I have always loved this aria and this is the recording that first introduced me to it.

I LOVE how you put the sheet music in-sync with the singing... that is just FABULOUS! THANK YOU!

    Mille grazie!

  • magnifique !!!

  • Une pure merveille !!! Et quelle direction d'orchestre !!!!

  • Thank you for this lovely version, but for

me, Sobinov owns this gorgeous aria!!

    Appreciate the posting!

  • Bravo!

  • David Gilmour and Alain Vanzo both done good job on this lovely aria, with difference style.

  • Ce morceau me ferait presque pleurer ... magnifique

  • Perfect and exquisite.

  • David Gilmour does this beautifully. Think he transposes it down a step.

  • Wonderful!!!

  • David Gilmour

  • thanks

  • Wunderboa!!

  • Quelle merveille !!!

  • Vanzo pitches this just right. Sensitive, yearning, haunting. This rates with Kraus, even rates with Gigli's great version from 1925. Was Vanzo ever better?

  • @PihaSandDunes Beniamino Gigli's rendition of the aria is beautifully sung and interpreted, but it is sung in Italian and his costume in Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" has nothing to do with Bizet's "Les Pecheurs de Perles".

  • I've been listening to several versions of this aria. Finally I get to see the actual score and proper rendition. Although I'm not an expert on music, I can tell how simple the melody is and how complicated it can turn out to be at the "hands" (read vocal chords) of the wrong tenor. Thanks for this contribution to a long dispute about how this piece should be sung.

    Gratia plena!

  • You have become my favorite YouTuber in the world. Thank you so much for posting this with the music. This piece has meant so much to me.

  • I'm stunned. It is exactly how it must be sung. Simply amazing.

  • amazing...

  • Beautiful... Thanks for the translation.

  • Très touchant Alain Vanzo. Riposa in pace. J'ai les larmes aux yeux.

  • he sings it too rough and too loud. This is supposed to be like a daydream of a tender lost love

  • Are you kidding? This is the softest version you can find.

  • lol...somehow my comment got misplaced. My comment was meant for Bjorling's rendition. Yes, I agree Vanzo's version is superb. I also like Kraus'.

  • Thank you very much, civileso. Best regards, t.

  • this song breaks my heart

  • el verdadero karaoke tá-aquí !!!

  • I usually don't like Alain Vanzo but after hearing this I might have to reconsider him. Amazing.

  • Così è scritto...

    This is the writing

  • oooooooooooh myyyyyyyyy gooooooooood that isssssssss sooooo COOOOOOOOOOL thanks.

  • thank u so much for puting this music on youtube i've been looking for the lyrics and notes everywhere but didn't find it' i'll give it to my friend to translate it for me. :)

  • You're welcome. :) I have the translation in the video description.

  • Agree. Alain Vanzo's version is my favourite too.

Watched "The Man Who Cried" movie last night and this song plays throughout. (Christina Ricci, Cate Winslet, John Turturro, Johnny Depp)

  • this is amazing..would it be possible to find the piano sheet from somewhere?

  • Petrucci music library. search in google. search for the opera. the Italian and German one is in piano reduction.
