This must have been utterly embarrassing afterwards for him. With such great education under his belt , one would think he would at least get the basics down. However, I know Castilian and can clearly see where he got confused. He also knows French and Catlan-as far as I know-so that may play into it as well. At any rate, it should be no excuse for someone who is heir apparent to one of the greatest empires the world had ever known.

Hay una diferencia entre ser bilingue, trilingue, etc. a ser poliglota. Mejor ser poliglota, que se domine su propia lengua de origen a tener el problema de hablar dos, pero cuyos pensamientos no pueden ser organizados debido a que se piensa en mas de una lengua a la vez. Por lo general, una persona bilingue no logra desarrollar una organizacion coherente o plena en ninguno de los idiomas que habla. En cambio, una persona que habla su propia lengua e intenta hablar otras, si lo logra.

He said "We're going to be fathers" because it is a direct translation from the Spanish "Vamos a ser padres". He should have said "We're going to be parents". He made a mistake in translating "fathers" to "parents". He is not gay.
I don't like his position or his title, and I don't particularly like the guy himself, but his English is WAY better than that of an 80% of Spaniards, and of course better than the Spanish (or any other foreign language) of most English native speakers. He's said "fathers" for "parents". Hilarious, eh. Take a look at yourselves.
@guildestein OK, let's rephrase it: his English is way better than that of an 80% of those Spaniards who have shared with him the privilege of having as many English private lessons as they needed/wanted. And that is a lot of people.
@illshowyouwhat I am Spanish, live in Spain and have voted the Communist Party (now within the united left) as many times as I have been given the right to vote. I am a convinced Republican and want this man and his family to become average citizens and give up their Royal distinction in favour of a morally fairer system. But that doesn't change the fact that he speaks better English than most Spaniards I've heard (e.g. Zapatero), who have had the chance to speak it just as well as he does.
@guildestein If that is a reference to the comma and its implications for the relative clause, no, it's not ambiguous. Most of the Spaniards I've heard also belong to the group of those who can afford the time and money to receive English lessons.
@guildestein Ah, what a classic response. So you're not going to tell me, eh? Something tells me you just got caught being a smartass. You're the kind of non-native speaker that pisses me off: "disappointed WITH"? Room for improvement ;)
By the way, you missed my point completely, but considering you were trying to impress everyone with your language skills, I'm not surprised. People who CAN'T AFFORD English lessons are PRECISELY those I haven't criticised.
@guildestein I just said in this same page that I'm Spanish, if only you could read... I keep writing in English to use a common language, because, by your obvious mistakes (e.g. "99% of THE Spaniards"), I'm assuming you're not a native speaker of English either. But if you're Spanish we can switch to Spanish whenever you want, I'm sure we'll make our points much clearer that way (in case you have a point at all other than your massive ego. Which, from what I've seen, I seriously doubt).
I always laugh when Spanish people say "fathers" instead of parents. Obviously Felipe didn't study as hard as he should have when he was in Canada. Still, I wouldn't have time to study English either if I were him . . . I'd be too busy fucking Letizia.
Los reyes tienen poderes especiales, por si acaso vigila el culo que te hace un bombo
bah los españoles siempre hemos dicho "padres" y lo traducimos literalmente "fathers" si los paletos yankees pueden destrozar el inglés nosotros también, tenemos nuestro propio inglés tan valido como el suyo y el de los britanicos
@winningsong haha, i did a double take, but no, he was thinking in the "Spanish way" He meant to say parents. Padres in Spanish literally means "Fathers" but it is meant to mean "Parents" I'm sure you already know this.
@winningsong Nah, it's because in Spanish you say "Vamos a ser PADRES" and maybe he just translated it literally as FATHERS instead of Parents. No one seems to be concerned about the million times American people try to say "exactomondo" instead of 'exactly'or 'correctly' in TV and the movies, which is such a maningless word, instead of saying "exactamente" as it should be. Those are just language things.
@winningsong in spanish we say ''seremos padres'', literally ''we are gonna be fathers'', but he actually meant parents. it's not easy to face a public speech man.
@rafaelson You're right, I myself interpret (English to Spanish) on a regular basis, it's not that easy, sometimes false cognates get in the way. I give props to Prince Felipe, his English is excellent!
@winningsong in spanish, parents is simple refered to as the plural of father. father=padre, parents=padres. its easy to make that mistakes translating in english.
@winningsong - oh my god...what an ignoramus you are. His 1st language is Spanish, & as such he likely has a tendency to speak English in a more Spanish way with regard to sentence formation. Anyway, in Spanish, the plural form of "parent" is the same word as the plural form of "father", i.e. "Padre"="father", while "Padres"="Fathers" as well as "Parents". So, when he said "were going to be fathers" he was obviously thinking of its Spanish equivalent, "Padres".
@winningsong hahahah xD In Spanish 'parents' it's called 'padres' which is the plural of 'padre' ('father'). So a typical Spanish-speaking error (I include myself) is making the plural of the word 'father' in english. Anyways... LOL xD
@winningsong English it's not his main language, so... do not worry about that. Someone it's going to be there, when even you can make mistakes speaking or writing in a foreign language from your point of view...and even, can be worse if people around you speak another language and you do not understand nothing, unable to comunicate with them...Nada peor que burlarse de los errores que puedan cometer los demas, que buscar la fuente del error y enmendarlo. Por eso andamos como andamos...
@casalivan It was a mistake, in Spanish we say "Padres" meaning "Parents", he is not gay. I think you're worse than him acting like a troll on a video where nobody'd really spend their time.
@winningsong settle down you idiot is impressive his fluency in the language just to pick on little mistakes like that show more respect to royalties moron
