Metallica used these but boosted them on ride the lightening, they used the JMP equivalent on kill em all. you can probably get a maiden ton out of it too
I think the speakers/cabinet have a lot more to do with the volume than 50/100w, though as loud as that halfstack got, I know a drummer that could drown it...
Yes, it's one of the 80's models with an FX loop and channel switching as well as a switchable spring reverb tank. If I recall correctly, everyone raves about the earlier ones without the switching and reverb (they say that the tone is better) but I was really happy with mine.
It's not hard to get that from a Marshall.. You just need to turn it up to near earsplitting volume. I think I was being a bit heavy handed with the pick too, but at the time I felt like it was needed with the singlecoil pickup.
I made the audio recording many years ago as a demo to help sell the Marshall on ebay. I came across it while cleaning up my PC and decided to post it. The pics just came from another hobby; I figured they would be better than a black screen :p
No boost, and the amp is stock. The bridge pickup was a singlecoil with fat round pole pieces and a cheap ceramic bar magnet on the back. I loved that pickup, it was especially sweet on the clean channel.
btw, the 800 is cranked really loud in this clip, though you can't really tell from the recording... I sold it because I played at home 95% of the time, and I got a Mesa Subway Rocket Reverb. I've had it for a couple years now and IMO it's the ultimate for home/apartment/studio use, plus it still gets pretty loud if you want.
Campbell, I think it was a 2205 with 6550 output tubes.
I have a JCM 800 and its tone is great much better than the valvetronix but it is A PAIN to lug around and a valvetronix would be much more practical if you aren't in bad and are playing small gigs or just jamming in your room
I just bought a Gibson Les Paul Studio. Now, what amp should i get - a VOX Valvetronix combo or a Marshall half stack around the same price? (I don't care about portability, just sound (but 95% of the time will be at household volume settings - not gigs.)
I wouldn't go w/ the valvetronix combo. The only thing from Vox i'd really consider getting is the AC30. You can't really go too wrong if you go w/ a marshall 1/2. you're obviously looking at the 800's. I'm in the market for either an 1959slp reisssue or the 1987. I would definitely go combo though if you're staying in the house. But thats personal preference. You should also look into Orange amps.(the rockerverb for sure). I hope i helped. I actually probably made things worse.
Hah, I agree with you. The JCM is of course better than the Vox Valvetronix for obvious reasons, full tube etc. But first, they aren't the same price. And all the marshalls in the same range as the VOX are horrible. Also, The main concern is usage... For practice, the Valvetronix would be the better choice. :)
i had a 96 squire and it was v.well constructed and nearly every1 agreed that id had a nice tone to it. the ne1 squires r pretty bad i must say, but theres the odd 1 or 2 that stand out from the croud.
How can I add me some more gain on my 800 4104 gain for evh's brownsound

Hey man. Killer chops. Could I get a Maiden or early Metallica sound out of a jcm 800? thanks and KEEP ON ROCKING!

Sounds very nice, I've only got to hear them when recorded by cheap cameras, so...
I don't care much for the singing in that song but I always loved the intro.
Anyway may I ask what kind of JCM 800 it was (100 watt, 50 watt, cab/combo?)
SkittyUriko 3 years ago
Thanks, it was a 50w head on a stock 1960a 4x12 cab. (I think that's 70w Celestions)
hotvwz 3 years ago
Same to you, I was thinking of getting a 50 watt halfstack, but I was worried it might be a little overkill. that's the main reason I asked.
SkittyUriko 3 years ago

The amp makes up for the squier
xwhickerx 4 years ago 10
Squiers get alot of bad reputation, because alot of bad players use them.
BronYaurStomped 4 years ago 10
holy shit, that's a squier?
tdawg0993 4 years ago
pretty friggin sweet tone from a squier dude, not to mention single coil
kkatarn327 4 years ago
hell yeah squiers are great for the money
Shaboobuhwogan 4 years ago
yeah - i can't quite believe it either.

what are your settings?
marshallEVH 4 years ago
IIRC, tone controls around half give or take, gain dimed and the master around 3
hotvwz 4 years ago
ok thanks

Thanks to all for the comments!

The tone is spot on, except for the lack of a flanger.
Good Job!

It's not hard to get that from a Marshall.. You just need to turn it up to near earsplitting volume. I think I was being a bit heavy handed with the pick too, but at the time I felt like it was needed with the singlecoil pickup.

That's from a single coil? You could have fooled me, sounds like a humbucker!
krakhaid 4 years ago
your allowed to turn a Marshall to less than ear splitting levels? Hmmm...I need proof on video of this occurring. :p
For serious, it sounds great.
manny75586 4 years ago
Nice tone, kinda nailed it :)
But why didn't you post a video of you actually playing instead :(

Try to get some pinch harmonics on the low C in the beginning, it makes it sound better =]
lamasterz 4 years ago
Sounds nice...what kind of settings were you using on the DD-5?
silverwulf2 4 years ago
I don't recall the settings on the DD-5, though I think I aimed for ~2 audible repeats.
hotvwz 4 years ago
it doesnt sound like a delay, more like a reverb.
acdc126 4 years ago
I probably had the reverb (spring in head) on and the whole thing was recorded in my parents' living room, which did have some "live" walls.
hotvwz 4 years ago
are you using a boost pedal if so which one?
aceshigh16 4 years ago
No boost, and the amp is stock. The bridge pickup was a singlecoil with fat round pole pieces and a cheap ceramic bar magnet on the back. I loved that pickup, it was especially sweet on the clean channel.
hotvwz 4 years ago
so ur running your guitar straight into the amp? nothing in between???
aceshigh16 4 years ago
Correct, but I did have a BOSS DD-5 delay pledal in the effects loop. Good crunch for a singlecoil, eh?
hotvwz 4 years ago
VERY nice!!! got some good brown sound there
exactly wat i want!

If you are really looking to capture that sound at lower volumes I would test an Orange Tiny Terror 15/7 watt.
