They don't need to modernize that one, there is a very large Dover across the hall.

Now wait a minute. Just because it's not modernized does not mean it's not SAFE. Perhaps they're laze about basically "remixing" the elevator but that does not mean they don't maintain it.

ive been on an elevator where you had to hold down the button and level it yourself and, hold the button to go up also

There is an elevator like that at the U-Haul storage facility here in Denver. You hold the button for the direction you want to go and release it to stop. If you are short, you press it briefly to move inch the car up to level off. If you overshoot, you press "Down" to inch down.

Well, all of the elevators back then were much slower. They did not have the technology to make the elevator come to a gradual stop.

I know; it was a coincidence. The very large Dover elevator, the one that can hold 9500 lbs., is right across the hall.

those switches you hear are the selector switches in the shaft to tell the controller where the car is....the door cam that unlocks the doors is pulled back with a chain when the elevator starts so the doors cant be opened while in motion.
