  • I'm an ex aircraft engineer and I've seen that many times. Buy a plane with fixed gear.

  • A too steep approach, too fast and too high. Thats it!

  • probably some really really good noise cancelling headsets, but probably doesnt excuse missing the light indicating gear up

  • They need to revoke his license permanately. Oh wait, they're french. That explains it. Fucking idiot.

  • I think it's a good training video on Threat and Error management

  • The gear up landing can happen to anyone how flies a retract. External pressure and life distractions will bite you at sometime, whether it‘s running a stop sign, leaving the iron on or car unlocked. The perfect storm for a gear up. You’ve booked that getaway with your buddies in the TB20 that you haven’t flown for 5 weeks. This has been a ball buster. Your wife has just served the divorce papers, the bank won’t refinance your home and your daughter is pregnant by your best friend. FOCUS!

  • That's just about the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Not only were they dumb enough to ignore the gear warning horn, which was incredibly loud, but they were dumb enough to post a video of their stupidity online. Too much money, not enough brains...

  • @rocketman3746 I think it is good that they post it online! We all can learn from the mistakes of others!

Belive me they are not the only pilots on earth wich make mistakes. Routine makes up a large part of mishaps in aviation.

It should NOT be a bad thing to show his own mistakes!

Because if we wouldn't, we couldn't lear from mistakes we did not for ourselves

  • @bolowke666 That's true, it's good to learn from others' mistakes (there but for the grace of god go I, as we say), but training the right way the first time is even better. This video is more of an embarrassment than it is instructional.

  • Comment removed

  • @bolowke666 There should never be such a thing as a routine mistake. Good training and professionalism should be more than enough to prevent an accident like this. I'm not even bothered by the fact that they landed with the gear up. I'm more disturbed by the fact they ignored almost 2 minutes of very loud and very annoying gear horn prior to landing gear up. That should never happen, no matter who you are. If it does, you may not be cut out for flying.

  • The pilots made a big mistake but that's no reason to insult them!

  • @Oberstbonze Yes, we have every reason to insult them. You do something dumb in an airplane, you usually end up killing someone. They got lucky this time...

  • @rocketman3746 The pilots have focused on the landing, and landed in rough terrain. In addition, I want to see how you behave in such a situation. Pilots are exposed to multiple stressors and a landing with an engine airplane in this terrain is incredible difficult.

  • @Oberstbonze I land in situations like this all of the time, in much, much worse weather. That landing was not even remotely difficult. If they had made a stabilized approach (taking into consideration the mountainous terrain) and followed procedures, this would have never happened. Forgetting to put the gear down is one thing, ignoring a gear horn is another thing entirely. If a pilot cannot multitask in a high workload environment, then he or she should consider another hobby.

  • @rocketman3746 Okay but that's no reason to insult the pilots!

  • Rich ass hole french deaf pilots,( i'll proceed to say it in spanish and french) spanish=estupido , maricon, viejo rico, in french=ass hole'e, rich'e, frenche'e, idiot'e. we, we, yes, yes?

  • And you choose to share your stupidity with mankind?

  • And you ignored it ALL the way down, not once aborting the approach to see what was wrong. Idiots

  • I don't know you could POSSIBLY miss that aural warning. Why were you not using a checklist? This is just sloppy and amateurish. If you have thousands of hours then it is further reason to see your performance as sloppy. Embarrasing

  • that warning alarm was so loud even a deaf person could have heard it!

  • WHAT A BLOODY PLONKER!

  • Μυαλό μηδέν Και εις ανώτερα...

  • A simple checklist would avoid that problem.

  • I spent many years managing the US FAA's West Coast enforcement program, This is just another example of a Stupid Pilot Trick. Must gear ups are uneventful except for damage to the prop, possible engine damage, the underbelly and landing gear. What is so troubling with the incident is the utter disregard for the warning horn by the PIC and the instructor pilot. Inexcusable! Anyone who flies in an airplane with less than 2 standup toilets is looking for trouble.

  • @Multi1043 Let me guess you wanna ban small planes right? Answer me this, how the fuck do you expect to train pilots to fly big planes without they learning to fly in small planes first? Are you a pilot, or an engineer?

  • Very good video.

  • how the hell your friend get the private pilot license!! jackass!! your friend is a threat for the general aviation! me and a lot of flight simulator pilots can do better than this! when i was 13 years old I would have landed the aircraft better than you! poor aircraft!!

  • @leonardopaintball "me and a lot of flight simulator pilots" You sir are a threat to General Aviation! Once you fly the real deal you learn everyone makes mistakes, not to say it’s acceptable, but it happens, it’s important not to attack the pilot (His government will do that for you). It’s real easy to judge a pilot after the fact, especially when your idea of flying is sitting in your chair, in the basement, pretending you’re not living in your mom's basement. Have fun trolling the digital sky

  • ALL pilots sound like little smartass green pricks when they make serious comments on youtube. "ooo look @ me I'm a pilot! T&Ps, checklists, I HAVE THOUSANDS OF HOURS!! I'm such a gooood pilot that I can critique UUTUBE VIDEOS!" too bad we can't all watch you guys gear up down the road haaha

  • Rote checklists are dangerous. Check the engine T&P's by "base, final" and see what type landing you will make - i humbly suggest it is of very limited uselessness. If the engine decides to pack up and go home just prior to base, you won't have time to reconfigure your approach anyway. If you told me that you check T&Ps when you've done your landing briefing which is waaaay before "base, final" you decide you won't fly a standard pattern and radio ahead and fly accordingly - then maybe.

  • T&P's on landing huh? What are you going to do if T&P's ain't right - go around and fix it in the air, or land and fix it on the ground?

Carb heat? Some engines specifically advise against carb heat on landing.

    Brakes????

  • @jetset404

T&Ps - Good to know what state your engine is in prior to the base, final. Obviously has an effect on where you would land and the type of approach, flap, flapless, glide you might make.

Carb heat - Many engines do recommend having it on while descending until 300'. Removed at that stage in case of go around.

Brakes - As in parking brake off. I have flown some aircraft where the parking brake can be knocked by a hand during the course of normal flight. Worth checking.

  • *BUMFITCH on downwind... to make such a mistake is beyond belief. I'm surprised they haven't killed themselves before now.

    * BRAKES, UNDERCARRIAGE, FUEL, INSTRUMENTS, T&P's, CARB HEAT, HATCHES, HARNESSES

  • That will be one new prop, one engine rebuild and a new paint job. At least.

  • Just to disregard a loud, noisy, annoying bell that indicates that something wrong with airplane at approach (near to the ground) should lead to loss of licence of both pilots. Next time (if there is a next time) use Checklists ;)

    Best regards, happy landings

    EDRY16

  • This is an example of how the brain can focus like a laser on the wrong thing. They KNEW they were on approach to a landing that MUST be made on the first attempt. A missed approach will not be an option. Somehow, aborting early and taking another look didn't seem waranted. So by forgetting the landing gear, the airspeed was not decaying as it normally should and something is evidently wrong, and the loud noise they heard was associated with the terrain that must be avoided.

  • One word, "Checklist".........

  • As Mou FI I can say that a lot went wrong before the crash. A too steep approach, too fast and too high. In such airfields the configuration must be established well before the final, since no go around is possible anymore. 3 people on board and nobody noticed the partially extended landing gear. The concentration of the pilots was mainly on the approach and it is quite obvious that they had no spare brain to do even a final check.Do not fly in any altiport without an introduction.

  • Old, rich, stupid, And obviously deaf. How could anyone no hear the unmistakable sound of the gear not down warning horn?

  • oops. We say in English, "Shit happens". Please be more careful next time, mes amis.

  • Old farts who can forget the goddamn landing gear shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the controls. Idiots.

  • seduke: you say "On the video you can hear the warning signal of the plane, that indicates, that the gear was not pulled out." couldn't you (you were filming right?) have tapped the guys on the shoulder and reminded them that there was an excruciating 1kHz type CONSTANT noise? That you thought perhaps this was trying to tell you all something? Why didn't the pilots hear the noise? Was it only over speakers in the cabin and the headsets are that well noise isolated? The whole thing seems bizarre.

  • Why a so ripid approach?

  • @PA47TP It's not a 747. You don't get out the check lists, run through it and declare 'Landing check list complete!' You scan the panel and just check flaps, engine settings, flaps and 3 greens.

  • nice decent rate on the approach. these guys are retarded

  • @strat6969 You have never flown a TB-20. They can do approaches steeper than this almost.

  • Never mind, I should learn to read the description first...

  • Judging by their steep approach and their calm reaction after landing I'd say the gear malfunctioned, and the shut down the engine prior to landing to minimize damage to it. It's not that uncommon on a Trinidad aircraft to have a gear problem...

  • That's a pretty annoying gear alarm! These guys must be deaf.

  • I know exactly what the pilot tought when he touched the ground:

    "fuck :)"

    So close, captain...

  • im 16, im doing my pilots liscence, and im sitting here now with my jaw on the keyboard !! ever since i started one of the many things that i have had drilled into me are checks ( and i fly a piper tommahawk with fixed undercarage !!). he should have his liscence revoked for this.

  • Checklist?

  • pipi pi piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii myear piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  • I wonder if that warning tone is in the frequency range that only teenagers could hear....

  • Firstly, great video! Your steady camera skills under those conditions were superb. Most people would have been jerking the camera all over the place like someone having an epileptic fit.

Secondly, what's wrong with the pilot? There is no excuse for not dropping the gear. Panic, forgetfulness, he shouldn't be flying if he is like that. No excuse...and I am a pilot.

  • @elghian completely agree wirh you!! this thing should not happened!! you can forget to wear the seat belt, but down the landing gear!!! Come on!!!

  • Wow

  • GUMPF, Gas, undercarriage, mixture, prop, flaps. Learn it.

  • Been there, done that. It's a sickening feeling. And for those smug commentators, you either don't fly or you just haven't done it yet.

  • @pollyfella What? land gear up with warning horns blaring the whole time?....afraid not. I fly a twin Beech and follow landing procedures which the pilot did not appear to perform; and no verbal check with the right-seat about the "Warning" horn, they how could they not notice?

  • Comment removed

  • Ouch shit.... that warning signal sounds SO bad to my ears as I watch this video and I know what is about to happen. Good do see every one in one piece. Let's try to learn from this. This has happened even to skilled pilots and will happen again some day....

  • Excellent video HD quality.

The Landing gear Warning System is not safe?( Unsafe wiring)

It should be heard in the Headsets, and not only in the loudspeaker.

All warnings, should be straight through the AUDIO BOX non switchable, direct into the headset, at least to the pilot. The way I set it up on my amphibian turboprop SEAWIND 3000, with a PT-6. Below an IAS of 90 MPH, I get a voice reminder:" CHECK LANDING GEAR", as long as I don't cancel it with an amber in light switch. L.P.

  • The landing gear warning should have a different sound, not a constant frequency, but playing different frequences of a horrible sound. Something like the song Baby by Justin Bieber.

  • @felipefreire065 I think it's better to crash than have to listen to that crap for a second.

  • @felipefreire065 all the money in the world could buy this guy a cent worth of knowledge in avionics

  • Piloti della domenica...state a casa!

  • Probably a combination of chatting and/or music on the intercom and ANC headsets. The gear warning horn doesn't sound through the intercom. THey would have heard it if it was a quiet (sterile) cockpit on landing. Still comes down to landing GUMPless...

  • 2 outta 3...the photographer did an amazing job of keeping his cool, and not only shooting, but framing his shots, and telling a good video story.

  • Why they didn't hear the alarm ??

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Check your gear twice or ..... react when you hear such a warning signal... I can't understand the fact u don't have any reaction when it rings... Maybe could'n't you hear it....

A good lesson for all the pilots...

Happily nobody were hurt. Enjoy your flights

  • BUMFFISH

    B-reaks are firm and holding

    U-ndercarige is down

    M-ixture is full and rich

    F-uel pump is ON

    F-laps are down

I-ndicators are are in green (T's and P's)

S-eatbelts, Hatches, Harnesses are locked and secured

    Pre-landing checklist completed

  • @Pilotobe: The acronymn "BUMFISH" and the itemized list for each letter you specified do not match. The letter 'H' which you left out of the itemized list is for hatches, harnesses (including seat belts). The letter 'S' is for switches (e.g. magnetos both on).

For, 'B', how do you check the brakes (not "breaks" as you wrote) are "holding" when you are in the air? Air brakes? :-)

  • @JAMessinaJr My mistake = (, you are right = )

Come to think about it, it was an embarrassing but useful lesson = )

    Cheers

  • Comment removed

  • @JAMessinaJr You're not checking the brakes are gonna work, you're checking they're off, i.e. the handbrake isn't applied =)

  • great job|

  • god damned =)

in my opinion, normaly when you "do list" and then cross check with "check list" you automaticly say "gear down" and "gear down verified" by the green check on the floor.

  • mdr

  • I'm pretty sure the warning signal doesn't have anything to do with the landing gear being pulled in or out, else they would have pulled it in instantaneously.

  • @teebeaubobo It IS the landing gear warning horn, believe it or not it happens that you foget it in your flow, overlook it in your checklist, and become so fixated by what's happening that you don't realize your gear is up.

  • Target fixation's victims !

  • An example of why you need to run a before landing checklist. Also get in the habit of verifying gear down when turning final, even in fixed gear aircraft. Force of habit will make you check this every time.

  • Epic Fail!!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this video, and for your honesty as to the story behind it. It's a really good reminder to all pilots as to what can go wrong, and I'm sure people will be thinking back to this the next time they check for three greens.

  • Oh now I actually read the description... How can you forget the gear with that loud warn tone?!?! I mean when I heard it, within 1 second I know you guys were landing without gear. Did these pilots have their 1,000s of hours in a 172 or this make and model?

  • The touch down was pretty hard though.... but glas ur ok!

  • Bah. It is not a crash, it is just a belly landing. You just have to change the engine, the propeller, repair the bottom of the fuselage and she will fly again.

In any case, ther is to kind of retractable undercarriage pilots : the ones who already forgot the landing gear and the ones who will forget the landing gear.

  • Glad you-all go out OK.

  • There but for the grace of God...

The first clue (other than a horn blaring in your ear) that you may have forgotten the gear is the inability to get the speed back on approach. Second clue is the donk-donk-donk-donk as the prop hits the ground...

  • At 1:38 the instructor asks: "You didn't lower the gear?"

Sherlock Holmes of the air !

Might have looked for 3 green. Might have heeded the horn.

Might have, could have, should have... Easyto say from behind a computer.

Contributing factors: the student/aircfraft owner badgered instructor into making the flight in an unfamiliar plane, and then flew the approach too high and too fast. Instructor focussed on speed and altitude. Oh well.

  • @captenswingman You have never flown a TB-20. With full flaps and gear, you can do an approach far higher than that. They will drop like a brick when they are all dirty.
