@midactsD You've nailed it - the USA is so diverse. Depending on what you're looking for, I may be able to help. I've seen everything except Hawaiii, Alaska, and Idaho. Besides those, I've got it covered. In my experience, it's hard to scare up a state where you can't have some fun. Read a bit. Do ten times as much riding. You can'y go wrong that way - even if you end up in Big Sandy, TX, just after dark. Cuz you'll press on to New Orleans and be really happy about that. Just sayin'.
@SaintFu We are in east Texas, piney woods region, beautiful !!! We have been through most of the western states but it is our first time east of San Antonio. We have a travel blog that my wife has put together to journal our travels. Link provided on my site if you want to follow along. Peace out, Derek.
Don't forget about deep southern Illinois and it's coal mines and it's Scotch-Irish heritage. We all came from Eastern Kentucky and eastern Tennessee way back when.
@222macgregor The Celtic Scots are descended from the Irish who emigrated there. Kingdom of Dalraida, & another wave of Irish settled there. Been to Scotland, N. Ireland, Rep.of Ire., & Eng. Love Scotland, N. Ire., & the Rep. Some of those Brits don't seem to like Americans. Ppl. in Liverpool & the Isle of Man were very nice to us. I'm proud of my English-Scots-Irish blood. My mom's gf. was f/ Co. Down, N. Ire., as was my husbnd.'s gt.gf. Also have fam. f/ Isle of Man.
@Moonstalker1224 The Scots have nothing to do with Ireland, what you've said is a common Yank misconception and Papist lie. Dál Riada was always Scottish only, all the evidence points to them expanding a tiny colony in Antrim N.Ireland.
Only Plastic Paddies like to link the Scots and Irish as they think it gives them a singular identity when in actual fact they are neither, they are just dumb mixed Yanks who had sex with other Yank colonists and bred each other out.
@segano1 All the ancient history I've read said The Scotti came originally from The Scythian Plain, settled in Eur.,then came to Ireland claiming it was "the Isle of Destiny." If I remember right, the Scots conquered the Picts, intermarrying with them. Ireland & Scotland even share some of the same names, which of course could be different families. Then there's that patronymic "Mac" that is shared. From what I understand Irish Gaelic & Scottish Gaelic are very similar. But maybe rec. hist.is wrong.
@Moonstalker1224 'Celtic' is a linguistic term, not an ethnic one, it's a linguistic term first coined by English linguist Edward Lhuyd in 1707 to group old disused languages from across the British isles and parts of continental Europe, it was heavily romanticised in the mid 1800's, and by the early 1900's, was hi-jacked by Irish republicans who tried to use it as an ethnic term at the height of Irish republicanism in an attempt to resist Britishness.
@Moonstalker1224 Thanks to the seminal works of Simon James (1999) and Brian Sykes (2006) the 'Celt' term can now be understood for the Victorian romantic idiocy that it is.
The term 'Scots' is of Scythian origin, the Scots are Caledonian Picts, as attested in the 'OGAP4' code found all over Scotland (even in the Hebrides and Lowlands of Strathclyde) from a 12 year period (1996~2008).
Scots have much more in common with Nordic Vikings than the Irish.
@segano1 Thanx for the info.I do recall reading that all the "Celtic Peoples" were orignally from the Scythian Plain. I'm aware of The Norse colonies that were there.
but most americans are embarressed of their scottish blood because they are protestant bigots. they would rather be irish catholics :) everyone loves the irish :)
@Patrickf1916 Actually, most Yanks only claim to be Irish because it's a Papist state (slave of Rome) and they are Plastic Paddie Yank Catholics in the United States (a Protestant nation) and so they try to use the 'Irish' name as an extra identity to disassociate with the Protestant nation of the United States.
The Yanks who have a Scottish, English, German or Dutch ancestor do not claim these identities because they are the true Americans who were there first and settled in correctly.
@Patrickf1916 Con't.. Most Scots, English, German and Dutch are actually glad we don't have to put up with foreigners ripping off our identity, unlike Ireland the weak, feeble cowardly nation that's history mainly consists of a place to escape from rather than go to, Papist lies, slave of Rome, mass paedophilia acceptance, bankruptcy 19th century re-invention of fake Irish culture stolen from superior more successful nations.
In fact, if it wasn't for Plastic Paddies, I'd barely hear of Ireland.
@segano1 Ireland is a beautiful country to visit, very friendly to Americans. Almost everyone in Ire.has relatives in the U.S. I don't like Catholicism either or any Christian rel. that adds to Scripture but you are so full of animosity & hate--Are all protestants in Scotland as angry & hateful as you? That is not showing the love of Christ, bro. You need to be delivered from this spirit of anger & hatred. Jesus can heal you from any past negative, emotional hurts. Reach out - He'll do it...
@222macgregor Well said, but what can you expect from the Yanks typical intellectual inferiority? Americans are dumb as pig shit, that is widely known.
The Yanks are the most mixed people in the world who have no concept of how ancestry works and how it does not couple with nationality. They are American and American only, you cannot be part nationality, yet they use their ancestors nationality as their identity which is even more ridiculous in practice than it sounds.
@segano1 People are just proud of their ancestry; A lot of different ppls came to the British Isles to make up what their ancestry is today.People came to Am. searching for a better way of life & found it... It has been an experiment in self-gov't. that has been quite successful. If u hate Am. so much what are u doing on an Am. website? BTW, I'm Protestant & abhor Catholicism but recognize there are good ppl. in this Rel. that know & love Jesus.(Just haven't left yet.) U nd Jesus' love in ur hrt
@segano1 Americans identify with their British & Norse ancestry or whatever ethnic mix they are, just like you identify with those small, dark Picts. They are who we're descended from. But we are Americans first.Thank God our ancestors left those small countries for something better. America is a vast, diverse land & is still the land of opportunity & the most powerful nation on Earth. Alas,China is the next world power as the Socialists are attempt. to turn U.S.into a welfare state. Bib.proph.?
@hyzercreek A controlling, humanistic gov't that care nothing for their ppl, only f/ their own welfare; rejecting the creator's existence & the recognition of a need f/ salvation thereby cutting off the only way of reconciliation w/ god & the only way to PEACE WITHIN & ONLY WAY TO KNOW GOD WHICH IS THRU JESUS CHRIST.
@Crayolakid1 t's from a truly fantastic album called "Skip, Hop, & Wobble", by Barenberg, Meyer, and Douglas. It's track 4, "From Ankara to Izmir". If you like that cut, you simply cannot go wrong by buying the album. Also, if you like that cut and you don't already own it, I'd very highly recommend "The Telluride Sessions" by Strength in Numbers (cuts of which can be seen on YouTube).
Thanks for the video. I did want to make 1 point, though. The Scots-Irish were in Appalachia long before the middle of the 19th century or the Potato famine. In fact, by the time Washington led forces against the British, many Scots-Irish were several generations deep on this side of the pond. Highly individualistic and anti-authoritarian, they were some of the Revolution's most ardent supporters. Been here since the start and will always be a part of this country.
Man, this is the good life until it gets tot he coal mining. I wouldn't say the music the best fit to us folk, but it's still fitting emotionally. We've got our songs 'bout the coal mining, and they're are deepest ones. It brings the pain of those days to today to those who never experienced it. Shame the mining and mountain top removed still goes on. Puts more pain in my heart than anything else out there. We're good folk who like it simple, but get taken advantage of still to this day.
Of course they don't call it slavery these days (they call it indentured servant) Which means: a person who is bonded or contracted to work for another for a specified time, in exchange for learning a trade or for travel expenses (as to America). I don't see much difference in the meaning of both words. look up white slavery 101 on youtube. The guy that put that video together is a rather intelligent man.
A lot of people don't realize that a lot of the Irish and Scots were slaves( in America back during the Irish diaspora. In many instances ( like loading cotton bales onto barges) they would rather have a paddy go overboard and drown than a negroe, cause the negroes cost money and it didn't matter if the paddy drowned. Most people don't realize that because of affirmative racism and all that "sensitive talk" that people are afraid to talk about. Seems like we got over it without any reperations
Sorry Rabioza I do want to clarify that I'm not attacking you. Sorry if I came off that way. We are both actually correct here. Most Lowlanders today (and even going back more than a thousand years now) are not any kind of pure single ethnicity. Each Lowlander has within him or her a mix of Pict, Briton and Angle. Many of them probably have some Gael ancestry as well. Gael though is probably very minimal in the Lowlands. The Irish however are mostly Gaels.
Look Rabioza, we could go on forever about this. First off, the Angles settled mid and north England (and yes I know it wasn't yet CALLED England) and south eastern Scotland. The Saxons and Jutes settled mid and southeast England. Of course there were still Picts and Britons there. The Angles, Picts, Britons and Gaels have integrated over the years. But the main influence in the Lowlands became Angle. The very language of the Lowlands (Lallans dialect) is Germanic related to English.
I believe most of the Scottish element of the Ulster Scots came from the south-west lowlands (Ayrshire / Galloway) and the Borders. My mum is from Ayrshire / Galloway.
Great video....the Scotch/Irish are a tough race of people....used to hardship...they have served America well...they brought the best of themselfs....and became the best of Americans..!!11
Wonderful video, and an fitting tribute to the Scots-Irish who have toiled relentlessly and tirelessly in the coal mines of Appalachia. The sound-track is some of the finest picking I've ever heard. I've got to get a copy of 'Skip, Hop, & Wobble'. Jerry Douglas' Dobro picking is absolutely amazing. You might want to check out my series of YouTube videos entitled, 'A Simple Life in the Appalachian Mountains'. Thanks for creating this excellent video!
@mmmatthewww I am sorry to take so long to acknowledge your comment; I don't check back here too often. I have previously checked out your videos, I think of my own volition, and I love them. What an awesome documentary you've put together. I was watching for, and really appreciated the gentleness of your interview. That film is something to be cherished solemnly.
Glad you liked the picking. Jerry is the best there's ever been on the dobro. And he's played with some fantastic artists.
All my cousins in West Virginia thank you for the respect. Many of them are coal miners and have families. They struggle, but they do not complain. They are good men, and I love ever one of 'um, by God!

Oh my God I can't stop the crying hear seeing the last pic. of the man with no legs and his two kids. I'm an Irish American Police Officer that was seriously injured in the line of duty after 18yrs. I can walk with the assistance of two canes. I have 4yr. old twins and the pic. just got to me. Great video showing the hard working men of this country. The song fit like a glove and was also great. Thank You.
@SaintFu great stuff. my family are or were all miners in Lanarkshire and midlothian close to 150 years worth of mining looking at the faces of the folk in your video they remind me so much of all the old miners that live in our villages round midlothian all gone now. great post
@gkidd1963 I am glad you enjoyed it. The human race is so profoundly connected. It's both the genes and the burden that make that face on those miners so familiar. And in the music, you could go back far more than 150 years and find a relative from a very different place. I didn't know why bluegrass cut me to the core as a mere lad until I went home to Ireland as an adult.
@StMichaelsCrew im an ironworker, injured much the same way and walking with,yes,,2 canes, and have some roots in the hills of scotch-irish appalachia,,,FOR THE WORKERS
@seonidh celtic, being of scotch irish, irish, welsh, dutch, norwegian and german heritage, i consider myself germanic-celt or celtic german, im appalachian before anything else, everywhere ive been appalachian people are the best ive been around appalachia people are mainly of northern european origin but some communities have large itailian and eastern european origins even christian syrians and lebonese settled in appalachia to work in mines during the early 20th century
Thanks for the posting and the video work. I loved the music. I lived in Asheville for 10 years and there is a strong Scots-Irish population in Western NC. I am trying to put together a playlist that highlights their music.

Ulster Scots came from the Scottish Borders and Lowlands. Mainly of Angle descent. The Irish Gaels settled mainly in the Highlands of Scotland. This is why "Scots" is heavily Germanic in origin while "Scots Gaelic" is Irish in origin.
Celts are actually a minority of Scots.
The Troubles in Northern Ireland are just as much ethnic and cultural as they are religious.
Well said chevyslcamaro. As an Ulster Scot whose ancestors came form Fife to Ulster over 400 years ago let me assure all Americans we are definetly not Irish and will never become part of a foreign Irish nation.
We have more in common concerning cultural, religion, identity and speech than we will ever have with the Irish. They are a different people.
Is it true that before the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century their was no united Ireland? I saw that the so-called list of high kings is bogus and that Ireland (the island) was a collection of petty waring kingdoms and was never unified unlike Alba (scotland) and england at the time. Therefore although there were gaels they didnt think of themselves as Irish but as Ulstermen, munstermen, Leinstermen etc.
Yes thats true. There actually has never been an independent united nation on the geographical island of Ireland. The only time the island was administered as one unit was under the British.
Ulster has always remained separate from the rest of the island no matter who controlled it and even the Gaels who arrived from the iberian penninsular around 300AD stole Ulster from the orginal inhabintants of the island who came from Scotland around 10,000bc.
"the Gaels who arrived from the iberian penninsular around 300AD stole Ulster from the orginal inhabintants of the island who came from Scotland around 10,000bc."
Would that have been the Cruithne or Britons known as the Picts?
The ancient British Cruthin ( Cruithne) formed the bulk of the population of both Ulster and North Britain in early christian times. They are are the earliest recorded ancestors not only of the people of Ulster but of Scotland as well.
They would be descendants of the hunter gathers that crossed over into the North East of the island around 10,000 bc.
Remember this is all archeology and prehistory so you can only deal in broad terms.
The Earliest known Inhabitance of Ireland were the Firblogs and then the Tuatha De Dannan. When the Milesians(gaels) came they wiped out both ethnic groups. A simular situation with what happened in England with the Anglo-saxons.
Look mate everyone is guessing about what happened before recorded history. The thing is nobody can say for definite.. Not even archeologists can agree.
This bombshell arrived last year. Check this out.......The latest extensive studies on DNA have shown that the people of the British Isles ( which includes Ireland) share about 3/4 the same DNA. This 3/4 we all share is linked to a migration from iberia just after the ice age, and has been matched up to similar DNA in Northern Spain. This was thousands of years before the celts were about in that area. These would be the orginal natives to the British Isles.
If you understood culture, in particular the early Celts, you'd understand that it's not the blood line that defined anyone. It's being like minded and one of heart that was considered. Interesting information none the less.
The studies showed that their was actually very little celt or anglo saxon blood in any of the British or Irish people. The whole notion of the Irish Welsh or some Scots as celtic peoples is now been seen as absolute rubbish as their DNA says this is simply not the case. The gaels that arrived in Ireland are now thought to have had little impact on the DNA of the island.
See just when everyone thinks they have it all worked out the old DNA results go and kick everyone in the bollocks.
@sashmyfatherwore You betray your bigot instincts...you say your ancestors lived in Ireland for 400 years and yet you dont call yourself Irish...what a joke you are....people who had parents born outside America call themselfs American....but you...are nothing buy a nasty smallminded bigot....try and stop dragging your knuckles off the ground you smallminded caveman...your right your not Irish...your a reject from life...we dont want you..you piece of piss.
@sashmyfatherwore I am scottish i hate all you ulster people your annoying cunts who stole peoples land and never shut up il never surrender thing is your outcasts no country in the british isles and ireland likes you at all your our laughing stock.
@Solarlad My ancestors have been in Ulster twice as long as america has been in existance.I've every right to be here. So are you saying that everyone who isnt 100% native american should leave the USA.
Yep. Ulster-Scots were primarily made up of Borderers and Lowlanders. The vast majority were. There was a smattering of Highlanders and Englishmen, and even French Huegonots. All were assimilated into the group we know as "Scotch-Irish". (I use the term "Scotch" as it is the American term. The terms Ulster-Scot /SCOTS-Irish are purely used by our cousins across the sea).
@chevyls1camaro your wrong pal, celts are NOT a minority in scotland, i know i am one and a highlander, yes ulster scots were moslty border mix with english, all of the highlands was catholic celts you nipple. the gaels mergred with the picts, i have celtic and pictish blood. theres only one reason scots gaelic was on the verge of dying, that was english oppresion, scots gaelic is back in the rise in scotland, all over scotland, sayin minority celts is showing your another ingnorant yank
@gaelscot Main tribes that made up Scotland: Picts, Scots, Britons. They were all Celtic tribes so you correct. Ulster Scots are 95% Scots ethnicity (other 5% is french hugino, english, german) as originally the plantation was supposed to be 50% english and 50% scots but original lot wiped out in 1640 Irish rebellion. Scots parliament then sent 100 000 soldiers and later 200 000 settlers. English pretty much forgot about Ulster. James IV (1473-1513) was the last Scots monarch to speak Gaelic.
@rabioza exactly! finally someone who has learned the history of scotland, also theres currently some 60,000 FLUENT speakers of scots gaelic in scotland and some 30,000 that can get by speaking scots gaelic, thats just in scotland, our mother tongue is far from dead and forgotten
@chevyls1camaro also, theres a 6 part series on you tube, "history of scotland" narrated by neil oliver, watch it if you wanna learn about real scottish history, were a celtic land and a celtic people, ever heard of the highland clearances????? sayin scots are a minority celt is like sayin the nazis loved jews. allot of historians also believe the picts were a type of celtic tribe even tho they didnt speak a celtic language. ignorant yank
@chevyls1camaro The Lowland Scots were of Angle decent and the highland scots were of Irish and Celts are a minority of Scots? I think you may wish to read up on Scottish history! The irish gaels you refer to came from Ulster and left that island completely. They were the minority in the highlands and united with the bigger pict tribe (Celtic) which stretched into the lowlands. As for the lowlands they were mainly the Britons tribe (Celtic) mixed with Picts and definitely not angle (German)!
@chevyls1camaro The Angles (actually anglo-saxons to be accurate) stopped at hadriian's wall mainly due to fighting against celtic tribes, i.e. the britons and the picts. The Gaels, Picts, Britons and a few more tribes now make up Scotland, i.e. CELTIC tribes and not Angles as you very inaccurately point out. As for Ulster? 95% ethnicity is Scots. Most English involved in the plantation was wiped out in 1640s Irish rebellion. The Scots then sent 10 000 soldiers there and started plantation again
Your American first off, if you have Scottish ancestory, blood, by all means be proud of it if you like but don't ever speak on behalf of Scottish or Irish people.
Everything you just said is an utter lie, Lower Scots was adopted as a regional language after the people pushed the Northumbrian kingdom past Hadrians wall into England, and the Scottish/English border reviers formed a Gaelic Celtic and Anglo dialect fused between the two.
Lower Scots is a minority language since time and memorial, Scottish Gaelic is not Irish and if you even tried to speak to one another in both you'd get nowhere, like speaking Dutch and English, part of the same language tree but not the same language, though the two associate with each other, English today is prodominantly French / Latin / Greek also, a regional mongrelised language.
Scottish Gaelic is the official language of Scotland, a Celtic language for a Celtic people, period.
@chevyls1camaro Christ you english you will lie about just everything you are forever trying to make out the Scots are english you Fanny don't you get it there is a strong hint in the word SCOTS I think because the Scots kicked you arese all through history it has given you a Massive inferiority complex you try to hide by claiming the Scots are english You pea brained Eejit.
Where's Ulster? Ireland. Where did the original Scots come from? Ireland. The tribe (the Scotti) also gave Scotland its name. Until the bulk of the Catholic Irish arrived mid 1800s, the settlers from the northern part of Ireland were happy to be called Irish. When the Catholic Irish arrived, because of religious differences, they started calling themselves Scots (or Scotch) Irish. Many Scots-Irish have gaelic names (Mac, Mc etc.) meaning they have the same ethnic origins as the Irish :).
I really appreciate the compliment. I'm of Irish heritage - I do Irish Folk dancing (well, did) in the US. I'm a huge fan of Irish music and its many US-derivatives, especially Blue Grass from Appalachia. The influences are obvious.
The photography is by others - shot almost entirely in West Virginia. The music is by Douglas, Barenburg and Meyer, from the album "Skip, Hop, and Wobble". It's truly excellent craft, all of it.
I think you need to look into ULSTER SCOTS history and find out how the soldiers of William became Hill Billy's. The old frontiers of Virginia, The Carolina's, Kentucky and Tennesse were not settled by Irish, but Ulster Scots.
The Wikipedia definition for "Irish" includes more that these backgrounds and interestingly the term British includes the same group and more. However I don't see your point because the one I'm making is that Bluegrass originated from the Ulster Scots of Appalachia who got their name Hill Billys because they sang songs of William (The Third).
I'm just the compiler. The music is performed by the best dobro player on the planet, Jerry Douglas, and two band mates (Meyer and Barenburg). The priceless photography was shot by others almost entirely in West Virginia.

Moonstalker1224 2 months ago
@222macgregor Well said, but what can you expect from the Yanks typical intellectual inferiority? Americans are dumb as pig shit, that is widely known.
The Yanks are the most mixed people in the world who have no concept of how ancestry works and how it does not couple with nationality. They are American and American only, you cannot be part nationality, yet they use their ancestors nationality as their identity which is even more ridiculous in practice than it sounds.
They only go so far back.
segano1 2 months ago

Bib.proph.?

@Rabioza
Cheers from the USA man.
chevyls1camaro 1 year ago
@rabioza
The very language of the Lowlands (Lallans dialect) is Germanic related to English.
chevyls1camaro 1 year ago
I believe most of the Scottish element of the Ulster Scots came from the south-west lowlands (Ayrshire / Galloway) and the Borders. My mum is from Ayrshire / Galloway.

Sorry barokfin but that's completely inaccurate.
The Troubles in Northern Ireland are just as much ethnic and cultural as they are religious.
chevyls1camaro 2 years ago 11
Well said chevyslcamaro. As an Ulster Scot whose ancestors came form Fife to Ulster over 400 years ago let me assure all Americans we are definetly not Irish and will never become part of a foreign Irish nation.
We have more in common concerning cultural, religion, identity and speech than we will ever have with the Irish. They are a different people.
One island two nations
sashmyfatherwore 2 years ago 14
Is it true that before the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century their was no united Ireland? I saw that the so-called list of high kings is bogus and that Ireland (the island) was a collection of petty waring kingdoms and was never unified unlike Alba (scotland) and england at the time. Therefore although there were gaels they didnt think of themselves as Irish but as Ulstermen, munstermen, Leinstermen etc.
seonidh 2 years ago
Yes thats true. There actually has never been an independent united nation on the geographical island of Ireland. The only time the island was administered as one unit was under the British.
Ulster has always remained separate from the rest of the island no matter who controlled it and even the Gaels who arrived from the iberian penninsular around 300AD stole Ulster from the orginal inhabintants of the island who came from Scotland around 10,000bc.
sashmyfatherwore 2 years ago 3
"the Gaels who arrived from the iberian penninsular around 300AD stole Ulster from the orginal inhabintants of the island who came from Scotland around 10,000bc."
Would that have been the Cruithne or Britons known as the Picts?
seonidh 2 years ago
The ancient British Cruthin ( Cruithne) formed the bulk of the population of both Ulster and North Britain in early christian times. They are are the earliest recorded ancestors not only of the people of Ulster but of Scotland as well.
They would be descendants of the hunter gathers that crossed over into the North East of the island around 10,000 bc.
Remember this is all archeology and prehistory so you can only deal in broad terms.
sashmyfatherwore 2 years ago
The Earliest known Inhabitance of Ireland were the Firblogs and then the Tuatha De Dannan. When the Milesians(gaels) came they wiped out both ethnic groups. A simular situation with what happened in England with the Anglo-saxons.
saacson 2 years ago
Look mate everyone is guessing about what happened before recorded history. The thing is nobody can say for definite.. Not even archeologists can agree.
sashmyfatherwore 2 years ago
This bombshell arrived last year. Check this out.......The latest extensive studies on DNA have shown that the people of the British Isles ( which includes Ireland) share about 3/4 the same DNA. This 3/4 we all share is linked to a migration from iberia just after the ice age, and has been matched up to similar DNA in Northern Spain. This was thousands of years before the celts were about in that area. These would be the orginal natives to the British Isles.
sashmyfatherwore 2 years ago
If you understood culture, in particular the early Celts, you'd understand that it's not the blood line that defined anyone. It's being like minded and one of heart that was considered. Interesting information none the less.
skrimpshidy 2 years ago
The studies showed that their was actually very little celt or anglo saxon blood in any of the British or Irish people. The whole notion of the Irish Welsh or some Scots as celtic peoples is now been seen as absolute rubbish as their DNA says this is simply not the case. The gaels that arrived in Ireland are now thought to have had little impact on the DNA of the island.
See just when everyone thinks they have it all worked out the old DNA results go and kick everyone in the bollocks.

The terms Ulster-Scot /SCOTS-Irish are purely used by our cousins across the sea).
scotohibernicus 2 years ago 3
@chevyls1camaro your wrong pal, celts are NOT a minority in scotland, i know i am one and a highlander, yes ulster scots were moslty border mix with english, all of the highlands was catholic celts you nipple. the gaels mergred with the picts, i have celtic and pictish blood. theres only one reason scots gaelic was on the verge of dying, that was english oppresion, scots gaelic is back in the rise in scotland, all over scotland, sayin minority celts is showing your another ingnorant yank
gaelscot 1 year ago
@gaelscot Main tribes that made up Scotland: Picts, Scots, Britons. They were all Celtic tribes so you correct. Ulster Scots are 95% Scots ethnicity (other 5% is french hugino, english, german) as originally the plantation was supposed to be 50% english and 50% scots but original lot wiped out in 1640 Irish rebellion. Scots parliament then sent 100 000 soldiers and later 200 000 settlers. English pretty much forgot about Ulster. James IV (1473-1513) was the last Scots monarch to speak Gaelic.
rabioza 1 year ago 2
@rabioza exactly! finally someone who has learned the history of scotland, also theres currently some 60,000 FLUENT speakers of scots gaelic in scotland and some 30,000 that can get by speaking scots gaelic, thats just in scotland, our mother tongue is far from dead and forgotten
gaelscot 1 year ago
@chevyls1camaro also, theres a 6 part series on you tube, "history of scotland" narrated by neil oliver, watch it if you wanna learn about real scottish history, were a celtic land and a celtic people, ever heard of the highland clearances????? sayin scots are a minority celt is like sayin the nazis loved jews. allot of historians also believe the picts were a type of celtic tribe even tho they didnt speak a celtic language. ignorant yank
gaelscot 1 year ago
@chevyls1camaro The Lowland Scots were of Angle decent and the highland scots were of Irish and Celts are a minority of Scots? I think you may wish to read up on Scottish history! The irish gaels you refer to came from Ulster and left that island completely. They were the minority in the highlands and united with the bigger pict tribe (Celtic) which stretched into the lowlands. As for the lowlands they were mainly the Britons tribe (Celtic) mixed with Picts and definitely not angle (German)!
rabioza 1 year ago
@chevyls1camaro The Angles (actually anglo-saxons to be accurate) stopped at hadriian's wall mainly due to fighting against celtic tribes, i.e. the britons and the picts. The Gaels, Picts, Britons and a few more tribes now make up Scotland, i.e. CELTIC tribes and not Angles as you very inaccurately point out. As for Ulster? 95% ethnicity is Scots. Most English involved in the plantation was wiped out in 1640s Irish rebellion. The Scots then sent 10 000 soldiers there and started plantation again
rabioza 1 year ago 2
@chevyls1camaro
Scotland is Celtic and -
phr34kyy 10 months ago 2
@phr34kyy

I think you need to look into ULSTER SCOTS history and find out how the soldiers of William became Hill Billy's. The old frontiers of Virginia, The Carolina's, Kentucky and Tennesse were not settled by Irish, but Ulster Scots.
24482263 2 years ago 9
the modern definition of "Irish" includes people of Gaelic Irish, Anglo-Irish, Old English, Ulster Scots, and Travellers.
Seamus616 2 years ago
The Wikipedia definition for "Irish" includes more that these backgrounds and interestingly the term British includes the same group and more. However I don't see your point because the one I'm making is that Bluegrass originated from the Ulster Scots of Appalachia who got their name Hill Billys because they sang songs of William (The Third).
