i just got the dvd in october, greatest wrestemania ever, and it was in good ol' Michigan. people compared this to WM23, there is no comparison, this is better and when wrestling was fun to watch, not all drama.
Vince McMahon is the modern day P.T. Barnum. Seriously, how the hell do you sell out the Pontiac Silverdome with Pro Wrestling? Say what you want about the guy, but he's a freaking genius.
It would have sucked to have the nose bleed seats at this event but still just being there live was probably awesome Hogan and Andre was the moment people never forget about Hogan body slamming Andre
I've been to a football game at the Silverdome. The Silverdome seats up to 80,000 people. For those who say there was only 78,000 people There would be empty seats.
@FrekyD McMahoan had nothing to do with the filling of the stadium.HULK Hogan vs. Andre was the BIGGEST match wrestling has ever known. There will never be one bigger!...it's Legend.it may not have been the best match, but it was the biggest my freind.
im for certain that the new cowboys stadium seats more than the silverdome. so if and when the wwf goes there there might be a record breaking indoor crowd.
WRESTLEMANIA 3 was Truly the Grand-Daddy of All Wrestlemanias. There might never be a Wrestlemania of this size again. WRESTLEMANIA 3 was Truly LARGER than life.
Why do those losers on Live Audio Wrestling keep saying the 93,173 attendance figure is a phony number? The Silver home held approx 80,000 and there looks like another 13,000 at ringside. What are those geeks trying to prove? Losers.
@sisterblister77 EXACTLY!! The configuration of the old Pontiac Silverdome was 78,000 when the Detroit Lions had a sellout. Buy viewing the interior ring section, that's at least another 10,000-15,000. If 93,173 was not the exact number, than it sure heck was very close enough.
@sisterblister77 Because one of the guys who runs one of the wrestling dirt sheets (forgive me, I can't remember wich one) said that he heard from someone who ran the Silverdome (who's also dead now) that WWF lied to make them selves look like big shots. And as we all know, if it was reported in a dirt sheet, then it's obviously 100% true. (sarcasm)
@sisterblister77 People get confused very easily on this subject. Approx 80,000 was the number of tickets bought, and the 13,000 were extras/handouts. Regardless, 93,173 saw WrestleMania III in the Silverdome.
The way to see it now is the 'championship edition' on DVD.You get to watch all the matches in glorious 5.1 sound. Then after that you pop in the second disc and you can watch alot of the fueds and matches that led upto WM3.Also on that 2nd disc you can watch the whole WM3 again but with little info bubbles (Like 'the Soup' tv show) which also contains modern pop-ups of some of the old and new wrestling stars talking about WM3.This is the ultimate tribute to the end of the 'Rock n Wrestle' era.
I was 10 years old then and wanted to go to this so bad. I drive by the Silverdome at least once a week and it is pretty run down and rarely used anymore. In fact it sat unused for years recently.
I remember being about 9 years old, my stepfather renting it and know a bit about wrestling from the cartoon's but never really watched it and the part when the logo opens up into the crowd, I remember it like it was yesterday being like "omg all the people" and watching all 3 hours in aw to everything that was happening. Brings back great memories
This was back in the day when Vince had a conscience and knew the concept of right and wrong before the Monday night wars screwed him in the head and made him lose his soul.
the intro takes me back, to when I was a small kid.. I remember the buildups to the matches, and you had to read the results in the WWF mag, or wait months for the video store to realese Wrestlemania, just to find out who won !!!
Hah, exactly!! They never mentioned it on the tv shows after. And the mags just had a few colour photos, but never actually gave out the results.
I remember having to 'reserve' a video bc it was booked that far in advance. So even after the release date, I had to wait another 2-3 weeks or something.
I still remember, I was 7, and while the event was happening on Sun afternoon, I was hoping to find it on tv somewhere, just wondering what was happening.
I reember renting the VHS of this for my 12 Birthday. It was simply epic. I didnt know all the match results other then the two title matches and was amazed in it.
I don't think the attendance record of 93,173 will ever be broken. I might be wrong but I just dont think it will happen. Back then there were no stages. They just came right out of the curtain. Nowadays, they have these big stages that literally take up maybe a quarter of the stadium. This wrestlemania to me stands out to me the most to this day. Steamboat vs. Savage and Hulk vs. Andre. 93,173 SCREAMING FANS. UNBELIEVABLE!!
Whats understandable but not understandable at the same time is how after all this time they still have NOT broke this attendance record with all the new stadiums they have...they can easily sell out and break the record at the new Dallas Cowboy stadium. But I am guessing that the whole Hogan/Andre feud was one for the ages but still that was back then...there has been way better feuds since then. Rock/Austin, Taker/Michaels, HHH/Rock, etc. the list goes on...idk
It's because Wrestling, even while still in it's heyday after this, was never quite as popular as this again. Even in the "attitude era." This was really the apex of "new Golden Age" of wrestling and the WWF/E
You should get a copy of Wrestlemania 4, original coliseum video version, because the original copy came with 2 VHS tapes, it was in 2 parts... and it was a custom VHS case holder that folded open like a book, and a pop up picture of hulk hogan or andre the giant poped out of it... like a pop up book. I think the only 2 cases that exist are either Hogan and Andre.
Yea, I think I will look for it, esp since it was such a large of my childhood memorie.. heh I remember, as that's how they had it at the video store.. it was really fascinating,. esp how they emphasized that it was 4 hrs!
I remember a local vid store selling their stock of tapes prob 10 years ago (including lots of wrestling at around $3 a pop.. wished I picked up a few)
@GamingPalooza Only Hogan poped up not Andre, on the front cover there is a picture of Hogan and Andre together but only Hogan was the one who poped out of the middle of it
My Dad & Uncle worked for the WWF production crew at the time and I remember my Mom, Aunt, Grandparents and my two cousins were there. We were about 10 rows back from the ring and I have to say this was quite of an expierence as a 4 year old. I remember my Mom HATED pro wrestling and even brought a book to read during the event. Well, lets just say that book was never opened as she enjoyed the entire thing, I think more then us kids did, lol!
@TheMadStork83 hey you know pat patterson mentions a similar situation on legends of wrestling (check it out it is here on youtube) where a woman was there with her sonwho had no interest in wrestling but she enjoyed the whole thing, i think he mentions about the mother bringing a book to read as well....hmmmmm
@romans52345 lol, no shit, really? I'll have to ask my mom but she probably wouldn't remember any of that stuff as that was the only time she ever watched wrestling.
This is the Wrestlemania that put Pay Per Views on the map. Still the greatest PPV of all time and Steamboat/Savage for the I-C title is STILL the GREATEST match in WWE HISTORY!!!
@Jman4200 I am so jealous. I was 7 at the time, and had no idea how this closed circuit thing worked (neither did my parents). Plus, I was in Canada so I don't think they had it, but had classmates that actually went saying how amazing it was.
But glad you got to see it LIVE, as only fans of our generation can understand!
SCREW WRESTLEMANIA 14, THIS IS WHAT HELP USHER THE MOMENT OF THE GOLDEN ERA! I love you Hogan thank you so much for creating those memories for me when I was in my mid 20's. Thank you for showing me that you don't need to see girls naked or middle fingers just to be entertained. Thanks for showing me the 3 commendmants 1) Eat your vitamins 2) Say Your prayers 3) Believe in yourself!
@tonshaad1230 actually it was three DEMANMENTS not commendmants and you got two of the orginal three right however not in the right order it was 1. Train 2. say your prayers 3. eat your vitamins and believe in yourself was a fourth demanment added in 1990 plus he added a fifth demanment in 1993 and it is as follows 5. believe in Hulk Hogan
The brilliant marketing of the Hogan/Andre match could have probably added another 10-20k people to the attendance if the Silverdome were able to accommodate it. EVERYONE wanted to see this match, even though it already took place years ago at Shea Stadium and in Japan. Mr. McMahon, you are a genius.
This in my opinion was the end of the Rock N Wrestling Era. WWE elevated after this and made way to what I call the WTWIW(what the world is watching) Era.
@steeltownbrown52 Yup. With the exit of Piper, and now Hogan assuming the true role of top dog in the WWF, it became a smooth running machinery with the efficiency of a corporation and introduction of new PPVs in the following years.
@epicfails222 Exactly what I was thinking.. to me, it always ruins the original experience. That crap worthless logo reminding that it's not the Federation anymore.
I have a vhs copy, and as soon as I figure out how to load it here, I'll try to post it!
How McMahon got the Sliverdome packed was he black out Michigan from the PPV is you live in the Michigan area you had to go there in person, not to mention seating prices were not a big compare to the tickets i bought for the last 3 WrestleMania that I went to
every time I watch this video i get goose bumps I do not think the world indoor attendance record will be broken unless wrestlemania is held in the dallas cowboys new stadium it seats well over 105,000 people
@ excarman...I got the same feeling you did when I watched the mass audience in attendance for WM3. This WM is my personal favorite. Professional Wrestling was at an all time high in 1987. I was only 8 years old at the time. How time flies so fast :(
It's still exciting to see this opening. Imagine what Vince must have been feeling. His vision had resulted in taking wrestling from smoky gymnasiums filled with a few hundred people to the Silverdome in just a few short years. He takes a lot of criticism that is often deserved but you've got to give him a tremendous amount of credit for what he did for wrestling.
Vince choked up when recounting this day for a WrestleMania special. He said he couldn't talk until he "felt" his dad tap him on the shoulder and tell him he was proud. He says he always wished his dad could have been there.
At that time the only way McMahon was to have a attendance breaker was to black out Michigan on the Short Circut Buys (before PPV) and you had to be there to see it according to WWE. you have Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant as the Mainevent who wouldn't want to see that? Andre has never been beaten. forward note Andre let Hogan get over and meanwhile Hogan was asking McMahon "Is he gonna do it? Is he gonna get me over?"
The Pontiac Silverdome does still in fact exist and is still operating. Local high school football teams, flea markets and other events are still held there. The Detroit Lions opened the new Ford Field in downtown Detroit, but the Pontiac Siverdome is still alive and kicking in Pontiac, Michigan! In 1987 is was the biggest stadium in the world with over 90,000 seats. When Wrestlemania III added floor seats to the venue, it was well over 93,000.
For Wrestlerock 86 I'll just say this ,They did not even fill up the floor of the Metrodome and that was the beginning of the end for the AWA because remember there was no Wrestlerock 87
Doubh it. WrestleMania cannot sell out anymore in 70,000 arenas. Its just not the same, nowadays wrestling fans already know everything about wrestling---fake. Back then, it was more real and everyone thought that. Wrestling today is just so dead.
The last 3 WrestleManias have all sold out in 70,000 arenas. And ticket prices today are a lot higher than they were in 1987, tickets for WM3 were as little as $8.
WrestleMania today is bigger than it was back then. Wrestling as a whole? Not so much.
I don't know if Wrestlemania is bigger today I think it was huge during the 80's and early 90's it's hard to compare. I don't get as excited for WM nowadays as I did back then because of the lack of star power, But I agree that wrestling as a whole today isn't bigger.
people say there wasnt 93000 people there but there was as there was no huge stage and every seat was filled so 93000 was about right and wwe did bring wm back to detroit in 2007 but it was in ford field and that drew 80000 people wow
WWE is so cheap they could easily pay the royalities. Being replacing songs with generic songs ruins the PPV or show for me .. Which is why I never watch stuff from WWE 24/7.. I mean when they released the WM box set they didn't edit any music what so ever but when they released the DVD set they ruined the whole thing with their pointelss editing ..
have they ever thought to bring a wrestlemania back to the pontiac silverdome? It's been 22 years and still is there highest wrestlemania record today.
The original theme to Wrestlemania 3 was Who's Zoomin Who by Aretha Franklin. This was from the Coliseum video release where they replaced the original music with (presumably) a Jim Johnston WWE produced piece. They also edited out Ricky Steamboats entrance on the Coliseum video tape due to it being "Sirius" by Alan Parsons Project
I have this on VHS... I'm going to post the intro from it without that worthless 'W' logo at the bottom.

Thanks for showing me the 3 commendmants 1) Eat your vitamins 2) Say Your prayers 3) Believe in yourself!
tonshaad1230 1 year ago
@tonshaad1230 actually it was three DEMANMENTS not commendmants and you got two of the orginal three right however not in the right order it was 1. Train 2. say your prayers 3. eat your vitamins and believe in yourself was a fourth demanment added in 1990 plus he added a fifth demanment in 1993 and it is as follows 5. believe in Hulk Hogan

what was the Main event here, who won?
Wayneman117 1 year ago
@Wayneman117 : Andre the Giant vs. Hulk Hogan for the WWF title. Hogan bodyslamed Andre for the win.

The brilliant marketing of the Hogan/Andre match could have probably added another 10-20k people to the attendance if the Silverdome were able to accommodate it. EVERYONE wanted to see this match, even though it already took place years ago at Shea Stadium and in Japan. Mr. McMahon, you are a genius.
philaman1972 1 year ago
This in my opinion was the end of the Rock N Wrestling Era. WWE elevated after this and made way to what I call the WTWIW(what the world is watching) Era.

True you're so right! Well said!
tonshaad1230 1 year ago 3
@tonshaad1230 Well yeah.:-)
-Piper turned face and was retiring.
-Giant turned heel.
-It made way to the Survivor Series,Royal Rumble and SummerSlam. And the Big 4 became official
-Fresh batch of new talent like The Rockers,Demolition,Jim Duggan, Ted DiBiase,Rick Rude,Ultimate Warrior.
steeltownbrown52 1 year ago
@steeltownbrown52 Yup. With the exit of Piper, and now Hogan assuming the true role of top dog in the WWF, it became a smooth running machinery with the efficiency of a corporation and introduction of new PPVs in the following years.

epicfails222 2 years ago
@epicfails222 Exactly what I was thinking.. to me, it always ruins the original experience. That crap worthless logo reminding that it's not the Federation anymore.
I have a vhs copy, and as soon as I figure out how to load it here, I'll try to post it!

How McMahon got the Sliverdome packed was he black out Michigan from the PPV is you live in the Michigan area you had to go there in person, not to mention seating prices were not a big compare to the tickets i bought for the last 3 WrestleMania that I went to
Keepitgreasy11 2 years ago
every time I watch this video i get goose bumps I do not think the world indoor attendance record will be broken unless wrestlemania is held in the dallas cowboys new stadium it seats well over 105,000 people
excarman 2 years ago
@ excarman...I got the same feeling you did when I watched the mass audience in attendance for WM3. This WM is my personal favorite. Professional Wrestling was at an all time high in 1987. I was only 8 years old at the time. How time flies so fast :(
pr1978 2 years ago
The problem with breaking the attendance record nowdays is that the staging they use for WrestleManias takes up almost of forth of the stadium.

The opening theme sounds like a theme for a late night talkshow. The 80's were such a cool decade
ciiu 2 years ago 4
It's still exciting to see this opening. Imagine what Vince must have been feeling. His vision had resulted in taking wrestling from smoky gymnasiums filled with a few hundred people to the Silverdome in just a few short years. He takes a lot of criticism that is often deserved but you've got to give him a tremendous amount of credit for what he did for wrestling.
Derby14 2 years ago 4
@Derby14
Vince choked up when recounting this day for a WrestleMania special. He said he couldn't talk until he "felt" his dad tap him on the shoulder and tell him he was proud. He says he always wished his dad could have been there.

I miss the old world wrestling federation intro. This intro is so cool
lildwayne21 2 years ago 3
At that time the only way McMahon was to have a attendance breaker was to black out Michigan on the Short Circut Buys (before PPV) and you had to be there to see it according to WWE. you have Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant as the Mainevent who wouldn't want to see that? Andre has never been beaten. forward note Andre let Hogan get over and meanwhile Hogan was asking McMahon "Is he gonna do it? Is he gonna get me over?"

93,173. :)

BigkuntryDean 2 years ago
i heard it broke the record for the biggest indoor sport event in history.
to my knowledge, the silverdome is still standing...

I bet the Gagne's were turning green with envy when they saw this the first time.
They were trying to set this up years earlier in the AWA.
okrabay 2 years ago
They did try in the previous year with Wrestlerock 86 in the Metrodome but it was a disater from an attendance and financial standpoint
Airsoftcleaner 1 year ago
do you know what the attendance was?
What year did the AWA stop being profitable and start losing?
okrabay 1 year ago
For Wrestlerock 86 I'll just say this ,They did not even fill up the floor of the Metrodome and that was the beginning of the end for the AWA because remember there was no Wrestlerock 87
Airsoftcleaner 1 year ago
And also The AWA officially folded in 1990
Airsoftcleaner 1 year ago
If they had taken the ECW approach and changed to smaller venues which they could have filled up and a different format they could have stayed around.
They had talent they just didnt do the right things with them.
I heard that Greg would present verne with ideas that could have worked and verne would shoot down anything advised to him.
okrabay 1 year ago
They should put a WrestleMania in the new Cowboys stadium. They could break the WrestleMania III record.
tbone975 2 years ago
Doubh it. WrestleMania cannot sell out anymore in 70,000 arenas. Its just not the same, nowadays wrestling fans already know everything about wrestling---fake. Back then, it was more real and everyone thought that. Wrestling today is just so dead.
RKOMorrisonFan 2 years ago 2
Yo iMPACT!
kylegrtf94 2 years ago
The last 3 WrestleManias have all sold out in 70,000 arenas. And ticket prices today are a lot higher than they were in 1987, tickets for WM3 were as little as $8.
WrestleMania today is bigger than it was back then. Wrestling as a whole? Not so much.
OldSchoolRasslin 2 years ago
I don't know if Wrestlemania is bigger today I think it was huge during the 80's and early 90's it's hard to compare. I don't get as excited for WM nowadays as I did back then because of the lack of star power, But I agree that wrestling as a whole today isn't bigger.

people say there wasnt 93000 people there but there was as there was no huge stage and every seat was filled so 93000 was about right and wwe did bring wm back to detroit in 2007 but it was in ford field and that drew 80000 people wow
sexyjc4eva 2 years ago
didn't that arena have like about 90,000 fans or something?

WWE is so cheap they could easily pay the royalities. Being replacing songs with generic songs ruins the PPV or show for me .. Which is why I never watch stuff from WWE 24/7.. I mean when they released the WM box set they didn't edit any music what so ever but when they released the DVD set they ruined the whole thing with their pointelss editing ..
aaazzz090 2 years ago 2
have they ever thought to bring a wrestlemania back to the pontiac silverdome? It's been 22 years and still is there highest wrestlemania record today.

The original theme to Wrestlemania 3 was Who's Zoomin Who by Aretha Franklin. This was from the Coliseum video release where they replaced the original music with (presumably) a Jim Johnston WWE produced piece. They also edited out Ricky Steamboats entrance on the Coliseum video tape due to it being "Sirius" by Alan Parsons Project
