Even with firewalls, antivirus and safe practices a windows machine is still vulnerable. Crackers have won and Windows is crumbling under it's own success. Microsoft literally has to redo windows and abandon legacy users (like Apple and OSX) make it a truly new secure system. . Can Microsoft do it - yes. Will it - my bet is no, and not because they are technically incapable, but because they have to much at stake and are afraid to do what they really have to.
I love when that happens; I have an Ubuntu desktop and a Windows XP Pocket PC. The core speed of the PPC is a whole 600MHz so XP crashes quite regularly. I have received (I've got crash log files here) 4,593 crashes this year, from 01/01/07. lol
I install hackware and have only gotten one virus... one virus in 15 years of computing. my parents can't say the same. I repair computers for a living and it's usually due to "click happy" people, but some people just don't know better. Linux has its viruses and issues as well, so does Mac. You're not safe anywhere! Paranoid? You should be...
No I meant what I said. The problem isn't Windows, it's uninformed ignorant and lazy users. And it's Microsoft's fault for not better informing users. And it's also their fault for new accounts in XP to be administrators by default. At least they fixed that in Vista (sort of).

I use windows xp, but use Firefox web browser instead. I guess that doesn't make me 100% secure, but helps.
