  • Amazing! It REALLY bothers me how much attention Carrie Underwood gets. Bo had way better pitch than her during the competition and carrie always seemed way too tense. A lot of people don't even know who he is which is ridiculous.

  • @guitarGUNFIGHTxxx The song was on their album that was released in 1973 yes, but it wasn't released as a single, therefore didn't get any radio play until 1975. I believe that's what they based it off of. But you are partially correct about the year. :)

  • sounds better than johnny van zant but nobody sings it like ronnie

  • Simon is right.

  • @lillucy120 i honestly dont know, i dont watch these shows untiul someone sends me a link when something interesting happens on them (like judas priest as guests, which i just recently got sent). i have no problem with bo choosing this song. i think he did an amazing job, and that more of the contestants on the show should pick music like this

  • ok. ill clear this up even more. i do listen to other genres. i can happily listen to tupac, elton john, even country like willie nelson and waylon jennings, i enjoy eminem, rhianna and lady gaga.

my point was merely that rock and metal is no longer mainstream (if it ever truely was for long). and that the popularity has shifted in britian toward to R&B/hip hop/dance scenes. im not bitter about this, i can still listen to my preference, and personally dont like a lot of the newer rock/metal

  • ive just got back from the download festival, which shows theres still faith in rock/metal etc. and in defence to my previous comment. it still is the majority, and the mnainstream that listens to non rock/metal music.

  • Shortest version of Freebird ever.

  • You bet we still remember.

  • i like how they dont even attempt the guitar solo lol

  • @Bostonsx93179 Think about how long the solo is. It would be retarded. It's a singing contest. They don't have the time to waste on the fuckin 5 minute solo. lol

  • @saulhudson420 well yeah duh lol thats the point im getting at

  • @saulhudson420 well yeah duh lol thats the point im getting at. they just went to some alternate repetitive notes that really didnt fit in lol. like they could have had a couple of runs within there.

  • I love SIMON! lol

  • I like Bo, but nobody should touch this song. Period.

  • @mobywv the point of him singing this song was to show his talents off not to try to prove inferiority to the original

  • @advisablyparentable Superiority, not inferiority. Everyone will always be INFERIOR to the original.

  • @mobywv be happy that he is singing songs like Free Bird and Whipping Post, while everyone else is singing crap from these days

  • @mobywv If there's someone who shouldn't touch this song here, then it's the band.. If anyone was ever to deserve to cover this song, then it's definitely Bo.

  • Bo Bice will always be my favorite American Idol contestant! And who in the world doesn't know Freebird? Everybody in America should know Freebird! It's an American classic.

  • terrible arrangement, does not do justice to the song

  • Trust Idol to ignore the solo :(

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, what a class act. See how respectful he is to Simon with the constructive criticism. I love Bo, but what Simon said had merit and he realized it. You don't see a lot of that on national TV anymore.

  • i'm glad Paula loves this song. You don't see a lot of women who are in a class to even be aware of this song.

  • Ryan Seacrest said it well " everybody loves Freebird"

  • His last name is NOT Van Zant! nuff said

  • It's hard to believe that anybody Cowell's age even living here in the UK - could not have heard of this deathless classic. Watching this gives me the same chills as when I saw him perform it for the first time on the show.

A shame that Fantasia & Bo haven't pushed their music in the UK though.

  • simon is right. it is a sacred song. you just cant do freebird. no knock against bo. he has a great voice. but nobody can do freebird

  • @bisp25 except andre baughner in duets man lol

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • British ppl apparently don't listen to Free Bird much. Losers

  • @meowdragon LOL get a grip .. we do listen to it we just dont cum in its eye every time it comes on :)

  • @Annihilation1919

it's eyes? like the song's eyes? is it normal in britain to make no bloody sense? w/e yall girls got hot accents

  • @meowdragon get fucked ! lol if you read it it makse sence ... it doesnt have to be eyes !

  • @meowdragon like the rest of the world, brittain mostlky listens to hip hop and r&b shite. though thers some of us with taste

  • @nunsnmoses unfortunately most of us do listen to that shite... but there are some Britons (myself included) who keep the rock rolling and still listen to greats like Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin & Pink Floyd

  • @the pop and hip hop in the charts is only a phase, which will hopefully pass. it wont last like skynyrd, stones, or my personal favourate iron maiden, ppl will still be listening to them for decades, long after r&b and rap is forgotten :)

  • @nunsnmoses

Haha, extremely well put my friend. I agree 100%.

  • @nunsnmoses get over it lol

  • @nunsnmoses And as the last 20 years or so have shown, clearly that's not true :P

  • @nunsnmoses R&B and Hip Hop will never be forgotten just like your personal favorites won't be forgotten.. grow up.. its all MUSIC even if YOU don't like it.. all music genre's will be around.. and none will ever be forgotten. I swear ignorance is BLISS on youtube.

  • @nunsnmoses But that was his choice. I haven't been following Bo, but didn't he have his own band? Was he the one that went to AI on a bet with his mother? I'm asking, so please don't yell or curse me out if I'm wrong.

  • @nunsnmoses iknow your comment is fro 10 months ago n it's your opinion, which you're entitle to, but let me just say one thing that the music that u love so much, namely rock, has it's roots in r&b. so do most other genre's so pop may be gone, rap may be a fad n hip hop may just be passing through but r&b is the grand daddy of all these children, so plz educate yourself b4 making such comments. n if u don't believe, check the influences of rock bands like stones, aerosmith, led zep, it's blues

  • @TheKamikoo Hey dude, Rock has its roots in Blues and Gospel, not R&B ! ;)

  • @TheAcousticJustin Huh? R&B stands for "rhythm and blues" therefore your comment is umm, nevermind.

  • @nunsnmoses amen to that brother

  • @nunsnmoses Sadly you are wrong and the internet mainly youtube has made these pop buble gum artist all to popular among the retards of our culture

  • Bo is still the Man!

  • notice that: at 2:15 they show his family and friends, one of them (the guy with glasses and stubble almost bald) was an actor in devil's reject (rob zombie film) in that film they also play free bird near the end :P

  • freebird is from pronouced, 1973...

  • wow freebird came out in '73 not '75

  • @brobst95 also released as a single in 74 but hes still wrong haha

  • good song but bo really didn't do it justice. could easily be the 90 sec time slot though.

  • I don't feel winnining did Ruben or Taylor a lot of good being the winners. Daughtry did better being 3rd. Bo is better off it gave him some press and he'll do great on his own. Record companies just want their greedy little fingers in your pockets.

  • I don't care that they messed up the song, I love Skynyrd but I don't like the original Free Bird. I love Bo's voice

  • As usual AI fucks shit up. Freebird was realeased on Skynyrd's first album "Pronounced" in 1973.

  • Bo Bice is the next Ronnie fucking Van Zant, but one can easilly tell the shitty background music (that particular rendition of a great song) was really holding him back.

  • bastards at american idol removed 90 per cent of the song and made it to fast otherwise amazing

  • i QUIT watchin American Idol after Bo, there was really no reason to watch it again!! Southern Boy Rock On!!!!

  • Interesting to hear such a short version of Free Bird, and his voice does seem to fit the song.

  • @tygonjinn That's fair enough. Still, they sound pretty similar, and certainly don't butcher it like here.

  • simon is right. you dont sing sacred songs. this along with stairway to heaven are the two most sacred songs ever. bo was great on vechile, and time in a bottle. but you just cant do this song.

  • whoever wrote this burn in hell freebird was one of Lynyrd Skynyrds biggist song and bo is helping keep skynyrd music alive and it's basterds like you ane simon who are trying to kill it freebird is the rock n rolls anthem faggots if you dont like freebird you must not like rock

  • flawless

  • Nobody will agree with me, but I thought this was a great performance. It introduced me to Lynyrd Skynyrd and made me love this song. Randy is right.

  • @sacon05 Hey, I agree with you 100% man

  • If it isn't Ronnie or Johnny, it's not Freebird. Just no one else can do it.

  • @dantheloyalroyal

I agree, but the song suits his voice so the cover is decent. However nowhere close to the original.

  • Simon ended up being right on this one. Bo was in the Bottom 2 that week, his lowest of the entire season. I grew up in a place where "Freebird" was the true anthem. No one touches it.

  • That was HORRIBLE. I'm not trying to be a dick, I enjoy American Idol. It just sounded flat and boring.

  • Bo went to my old high school!!:) LCHS forever!!

  • I bet when bo told the band he was singing freebird the guitarist got a little nervous(the solo)

  • first of that solo is easy if your decent at guitar and 2nd off they wouldnt add at 4 min solo in the song for no reason

  • What Simon said was that "Free Bird" is a "sacred" song..and it is. No one should touch that song. I agree with him.

  • what? everybody knows this song. what simon should have said is that bo sang a weak rendition.

  • This song is so well know. How the hell can Simon say that wtf??? About 98% of the songs that people sing on this damn show are so unwell known. what a jackass lol, i didnt like his 3 minute version but yeah, a good voice.

  • Simon is right on target here!!!! Have some respect, Bo.

  • @johnoro

sort of... my problem is that you just can't sing free bird in 1 minute... its a ten minute song and you can't have the solo in it... but what can i say... BO KNOWS he's the only real rocker to ever do good on idol (that i know, i don't exactly watch it)

  • He's good

  • haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • he sounds like lynard skynard

  • @trevorboprey

he sounds as close to them. He is just like your spelling of Lynyrd Skynyrd....close but not quite there

  • oh oops lol

  • LOL to masonb, :] "he sounds close to them. He is just like your spelling of Lynyrd Skynyrd....close but not quite there" LOL that was clever, made me crack up :]

  • @MortetleFleur

I saw that and was like, I have to say something smart ass about it lol

  • 3 minute version? horrible

  • agree

  • @deggis4 yeah he started great in the slow part and just cut to the end near the solo. that was a AWESOME song that got RUINED :(

  • This guy was recommended, but dear god why? He runined that song!

  • hell no he did not ruin the song Bo i wanted To win in this season and he should've this is a great cover!

  • :/ i still think he should have won

  • I think the person that should have won...won. It's just too bad that Bo was up against Carrie. He could have easily won season 5 or 6.

  • Problem is....It's not from 1975 Bo. The song was first recorded in 1968, and was put on their debut cd which was....1973.

  • @SpawnofSkynyrd I didnt know that it was recorded in '68, but yeah, it was released on their debut album "pronounced leh-nerd skin-herd" (their may be a spelling error)

  • Is he an alabama or auburn fan?

  • I think people don't realize that NOT winning 1st place on American Idol isn't a bad thing. 1st place means you're tied to their contract with big limitations. Not winning gives the talented person bigger and better contracts and the freedom to chose. Think about it.

  • @lillucy120 Yep, actually more famous AI are not the winner.

  • @lillucy120 Maybe you don't realize that ANYONE that is on this show is bound to the 19 entertainment contract unless 19 Entertainment decides they do not want them

  • @lillucy120 Mmmm....I think you need to think about it! Where on earth do you

get your info? 2nd place also is tied to a contract and limitations. Not winning

does not give the talented person bigger and better contracts. It just so happens

many times the person who does not win..ends up being more successful.

  • @JIP1428 I think that's what I kind of meant (the person not winning ends up more successful), but I just chose my words wrong. Thank you for the correction and not cussing me out like some people do. I'm just an old lady who likes AI and probably shouldn't give opinions.

  • @lillucy120

also idk why, but usually the runner up is better than the winner

  • @TheWillLockwood carrie underwood won that year i think lol and i think her career is much bigger than his right now...

  • @Th2342000 yeah but who do you think is the better singer?

i know the winner usually does better, but i usually like the runner up a lot more

  • @TheWillLockwood ordinarily i'd agree but carrie underwood is just as good a singer with her country music and has WAY more hitsd and success

  • @Th2342000 ok maybe i didnt say what i thought well enough

i do agree that the winner can be just as good a singer as the runner up, but i usually just like the runner up more. i think it just comes down to the fact that people tend to vote for the type of music they like, not the actual voice, and the type of music i like usually differs from a lot of peoples.

    but yeah you are right

  • @TheWillLockwood no doubt, yea i thought bo was amazing but that was just one of the few years the winner was actually the best.....like when taylor won......daughtry should have won easily, the year fantasia won i thought latoya should've won.....

  • @lillucy120 It's also about Payola. The reason that Taylor Hicks isn't considered "successful" (which is bullshit, because he IS) is because of Simon Cowell. When it became clear that Taylor was going to win the show, Simon decided to back Chris Daughtry instead. So they poured tons of money promoting Daughtry's album and NOTHING to promote Taylor's. Even radio stations in his home state of Alabama said that they would never play a Taylor Hicks song because they got a payout not to.

  • @mermaidofsuburbia, taylor hicks suck dude, and american idol didnt make daughtry album he made it his self, daughtry would have killed taylor hicks, if it would have been taylor and chris taylor would not have won, i spent my money on taylor 1st and 2nd album and yes they both suck.

  • @lillucy120 adam lambert got noticed then quit

  • @italianobro But that was his choice

  • @italianobro But was his choice. I haven't been following Bo, but didn't he have his own band? Was he the one that went to AI on a bet with his mother? I'm asking, so please don't yell or curse me out if I'm wrong.

  • bo is just unreal,what a voice!

  • I love his version! Very beautiful voice! Bo should have won, he's just amazing! =]

  • uh. i didn't watch american idol during season 4 i guess . . . not much into TV , more into music . Rock music that is , and how come Bo didn't win again? They need to have a Rock American Idol Season . Only Rock Stars !

  • i love the song with Bo singing it, Simon just gets offbase sometimes!

  • What ??!!

    that was well known song..

I'm from Malaysia and i'm 15 yrs old

I'm fall in love with this song since the first time my dad show to me their live prformance..

    poor simon..

  • i usually dont liike covers, but sumhow managed 2 make it work and it dusnt make me feel like i wanna go lissen 2 the real 1

  • the guitarist missed the solo but i bet not many guitarists can play like ole' GR

  • that would have been ok but that band sucked dick

  • This is a sacred song indeed. No one has ever recorded a decent cover of this song. It's one of the few songs that no one can cover. You can try, but don't bet on it.

  • I think the cover that Molly Hatchet and Charlie Daniels did is awesome... it's here in youtube...

  • are you fking kiding me

who ever doesnt know free bird can go fk

  • actually i didnt know who they were till now.... i think its a great song :P

  • @noles1334 oh shut it douch bag .. stop living in the 70s

  • Simon is an idiot. "Well known songs." What a douche.

  • Everyone Knows Free Bird! It's A classic! Haha there been so many people who butched it though. He's rocking it! Check out jason michael carrol doin it. That's funny stuff

  • Obviously, you aren't from any southern state in the US. Pretty much EVERYONE knows Freebird. As a band, if you don't know this song, you'll get run out of the bars.

  • Listen to any rocks classics station in any city and you'll hear it 20-30 times a day! It's very well known. A classic.

  • Everyone knows this song. You're asking the wrong people. Ask adults and guitarists.

  • BWHAHAHAHAH are you joking? you say mate, so maybe it's a country by country thing, but i don't know ANYONE in America who doesn't know this song lol

  • i thought this would be the best song to fit bo's voice, but surprisingly but that is not the case

  • even if a constipated warthog who is giving birth sang this song it will still be awesome... i mean this is 'freebird' we are talking about :D

p.s. i think Bo did a wonderful job as always :(

  • Bo <3

  • Great performance from Bo...

but I still feel like Free Bird is, like Simon said, a "sacred song."

  • True.

  • Yes Bo, we will remember you forever!

  • guessed he's envied by a lot of men and desired by a lot of women. God smiled upon him the day he was born

  • This guy could just about get laid 24/7 fame or no fame ! Lucky bastard hehe

  • I'd love to see him sing Plush by Stone temple pilots as he has a very similar voice etc

  • Not his best song.

  • lol~ if he only played the guitar while singing this song! he could have win!

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!! He should of beat Carrie Underwood!!!!

  • it's not good music?! have you ever heard the original song, better yet, have you ever heard the original song played live? look it up and then tell something.

  • Yes. I have heard the song. Live and studio versions.

  • ok, may I ask you what do you consider to be good music?

  • I have a wide range of tastes. AC/DC Avenged Sevenfold Blink 182 Black Sabbath Disturbed Eminem Linkin Park Metallica Paramore Queen Taylor Swift Even a Miley song or two thrown in
  • ur a fucking homo

  • dude it sounds just like the original, lol.

  • I agree. His voice isn't right for it

  • he kinda looks like ronnie van zant

  • More like Gary Rossington

  • you know this is old lol. cingular

  • he was the one to rock at AI

  • yup...still remember you !

  • Alabama's Bo is as sweet and sincere as he is TALENTED! WE LOVE HIM!

  • this song isnt as great as the origional but it's damn near close enough! I love Bo Bice!

  • Thanks to Bo I discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd. Bo is awesome!!!!

  • freebird gt amazing solo! 5 min solo! ftw

  • he sings all my favorite 70's songs :)

  • didn't see AI that year. =( Bo gr8

  • wow that was really good 0.0

ive never seen this guy b4

  • Sounds a lot like like the original. Great performance

  • Bo is right everyone DOES know this song which is precisely why he shouldnt attempt it.I have no doubts that he has a talent of sorts but not for this particular number. He didnt get raw enough and the strutting WELL pathetic I have played and sung this song for years but I would not consider myself proficient enough vocally to even put it on here let alone perform for millions on TV. A better choice of song and I am sure Bo will go far and I wish him well

  • hey, i think it rocks that he brought that song on American Idol. He brought good music to the masses that otherwise listen to 50Cent
