i'm very glad he did not sing. he did the right thing! it's not appropriate to sing
on a tv news show, even if it's a small sample. they played his cd which he was singing very well, that was more than enough. let him not sing on tv shows anymore. this interview went well, he answered the questions well. it's not disastrous. please tell him my message.
@sheenu1982 Yes. Varmaji felt so terrible about not singing when asked to that
he never did the same mistake ever again. Just watch his amazing Dutch TV interview, taken two years later and you will see what I mean. You might enjoy his
Bhakthi TV interview too, though the questions are asked in Telugu. (Varmaji answers in English.)
Great! finally the beginning for appreciation of carnatic music is felt in london. I wish we in the UK shld also be having festivals like thyagaraja utsavam as in the US every year. We sadly dont get to see that many concerts are popularity for carnatic music as it is now in the US, I hope this will change in the time to come. Shri Verma I think you shld have sung atleast some pallavi of some song, It looks like the interview itself was a surprise, or were you just shy! Thanks 4 / initiation.
Yes, I feel the same too. Varmaji was young and extremely shy in this video and quite different from the suave and media savvy Prince Charming he is now :)
The song in the background "Annapoorne Visalakshi" sounds great. Is is sung by Rama Varma-Ji ? If yes, how can can we get the CDs or cassettes of the same ?
Prince Rama Varma-ji is really great and knowledgeable, no doubt. May be Varma-ji has little bit of shy feeling which prevented him from singing on BBC. That would have been great if Varma-ji had sung even few lines of any classical song or even swarams.

Its very Good that Indian Music especially Carnatic is getting to West.
He should have sung some small alaap...when he was asked to sing ..
I agree it could be difficult without Tanpura, still .....

This was apparently taken sometime around 1998 or so when Varma ji was in his late twenties, but looked much younger. I prefer him now too :)
