This was what we called racing, and hard racing. That's what formula 1 is supposed to be. Not this business of Schumi is leading Hamilton in Monza 2011, and because Hamilton has a faster car and has failed to overtake, every commentator starts to say that Schumi is blocking Hamilton. @Veilside1000HP At that stage of the race Senna's tyres were worn and Senna was losing ground easily. Having raced before, I know from experience that worn tyres can cost serious lap time, no matter what power the engine is.
@Veilside1000HP benetton has used ford-engines for a couple of years before. mclaren got these engines for the first year. so the benetton was developed around this engine, but not the mclaren. also benetton got the newer generation of engines. so schumi could pass senna "easily"!
I guess at that time Ford has the crappiest engine out there, too bad due to financial reasons Honda pulled out of F1. Otherwise it would have been a good battle.

Both Schumacher and prost are great. But when Schumacher joined F1, he started off with better cars then senna did, and if u take both their primes into action, senna accomplished more in shorter time, even with prost around.

The engine was less powerful than HBA8 or the V10 Renault but his car wasn't an "outclassed McLaren". The MP4/8 was full of electronics, had an EEC from TAG and the best Traction Control system, best Active suspension, best Data logger & Telemetry systems.
Senna won in Donninton 93 in the rain with a car full of electronic aids, while Schumacher had not any electronic aid. Even Michael Andretti in that Mclaren overtook Schumi! That was a joke!!!

i read somewhere that Ayrton in two last races (suzuka and adelaide) had same engine as used in benetton, and we all know, that he won those grand prix, so if he had same engines as benetton at the beginning of 1993 season, we would have Ayrton as world champion, not Alain.
@kamcio8520 Absolutely no chance - the Williams of 92 and 93 was untouchable, it wasn't just about the engines (and i'm not sure how McLaren would have had Ford engines at the end of 92 if that's what you're saying) - the williams was Adrian Newey designed, reliable and more electronic aids than the other cars put together. The McLaren with any other engine and even with Senna would not have beaten the Williams Renault of 1993.
Prost is a cheap ass who used politics and his friendship with the FIA president just because theyre both french to suspend senna from f1 and blame the crash on him.

In that times some electronic features were available only to some teams, and by that the car from senna had almost nothing so that's reason for the difference between cars, not the engine, stop talking about HP that's not all. For example the william's that prost was driving had a system that helped a lot the driver in the corners, it was a system that would correct the balance of the car
The Ford engine in Benneton was 40 hp more powerful than McLaren's. Ford had a contract issue with Benneton that the best model of engine available SHOULD be Benneton's.

Both Prost and Schumacher had better and faster cars. In fact Senna showed LOTS of skills here... 1993 was maybe his best year. Races like Interlagos, Donington, Canada, Imola, Suzuka and Adelaide showed that he was in fact in his best year.

@MrRW26 In 1994, yeah. Problem for McLaren in 1993 was that Honda pulled out of F1 that year, and sadly Ron Dennis couldn't secure the Renault engines as used by Williams. They had to settle for the Ford V8 (a customer engine nowhere near as powerful as the ones Benetton used).

Benetton used the HB6 type (first generation with a pneumatic valve spring system) until mid-season and then switched to the latest HB7 type when it was available at Hockenheim. McLaren made at the same time the step from the HB5 (last generation with mechanic valve springs) to the HB6. However, the team's performances stayed the same all season long.
@irishguy200007 I severely doubt that. Where is your evidence? same engine block, same bore and stroke, which means - the torque was as good as identical. The difference in power was only due to the difference in rotation speeds. Senna used the HB5 engine type in Silverstone (mechanic valve springs), Schumacher the HB6 (pneumatic valve springs). that makes - in the same environment - max. 500 rpm or 5% more power. a difference of 30 hp is more likely that the 100 you quote.
That is why he was the best. He did things with shit cars when Prost would have retired, Mansell went crying to indy cars, and anyone else would have just gave up.

Senna always fought for the lead even driving in slower cars - schumacher with the fastest ferrari ever would sometimes be left behind by barrichello; and we all know that if senna was in that ferrari he wouldnt need the other driver to slow down and let him pass.

The engine was less powerful than HBA8 or the V10 Renault but his car wasn't an "outclassed McLaren". The MP4/8 was full of electronics, had an EEC from TAG and the best Traction Control system, best Active suspension, best Data logger & Telemetry systems.

Senna won in Donninton 93 in the rain with a car full of electronic aids, while Schumacher had not any electronic aid. Even Michael Andretti in that Mclaren overtook Schumi! That was a joke!!!
But in Barcelona 92 in the rain, both drove with no traction controls, and Senna could not be as fast as Schumacher and finally Senna crashed trying to catch Schumi. First victory of Schumacher, Spa 92, and there was rain, beating Mansell, Senna... everyone !

@hunt2727 Senna won Dinington mostly for having made right decisions on changing the tyres, whilst the Williams and specially Prost got it messed up...the same went for Schumacher in belgium 92, he made better switch. He beat Mansell but probably he would not keep infront of the Williams if there was no misfire from Nigel´s Renault engine.

i read somewhere that Ayrton in two last races (suzuka and adelaide) had same engine as used in benetton, and we all know, that he won those grand prix, so if he had same engines as benetton at the beginning of 1993 season, we would have Ayrton as world champion, not Alain.

@kamcio8520 Absolutely no chance - the Williams of 92 and 93 was untouchable, it wasn't just about the engines (and i'm not sure how McLaren would have had Ford engines at the end of 92 if that's what you're saying) - the williams was Adrian Newey designed, reliable and more electronic aids than the other cars put together. The McLaren with any other engine and even with Senna would not have beaten the Williams Renault of 1993.

If u dont know than I say. In that times some electronic features were available only to some teams, and by that the car from senna had almost nothing so that's reason for the difference between cars, not the engine, stop talking about HP that's not all. For example the william's that prost was driving had a system that helped a lot the driver in the corners, it was a system that would correct the balance of the car

Both Prost and Schumacher had better and faster cars. In fact Senna showed LOTS of skills here... 1993 was maybe his best year. Races like Interlagos, Donington, Canada, Imola, Suzuka and Adelaide showed that he was in fact in his best year.

@lotwyo You wrong, Senna didn't have a good car, that year Maclaren used Ford engines because Honda declined from F1 after 1992, even so, without a powerful car, he win 5 races in 93. In that year williams had the best car ever in F1, with all electronics gadgets, even the suspension was electronic, giving more grip to the car. In the 94 williams cars, all the electrics were retired because FIA didn't approve those, and Senna had to fight again to good results in Williams cars.... till he died..

@MrRW26 In 1994, yeah. Problem for McLaren in 1993 was that Honda pulled out of F1 that year, and sadly Ron Dennis couldn't secure the Renault engines as used by Williams. They had to settle for the Ford V8 (a customer engine nowhere near as powerful as the ones Benetton used).

@S7r0ng3r You're right on the Ford HB engines in the MP4/8, but "nowhere near as powerful als the ones Benetton used" is quite embroidered. Benetton used the HB6 type (first generation with a pneumatic valve spring system) until mid-season and then switched to the latest HB7 type when it was available at Hockenheim. McLaren made at the same time the step from the HB5 (last generation with mechanic valve springs) to the HB6. However, the team's performances stayed the same all season long.

@irishguy200007 I severely doubt that. Where is your evidence? same engine block, same bore and stroke, which means - the torque was as good as identical. The difference in power was only due to the difference in rotation speeds. Senna used the HB5 engine type in Silverstone (mechanic valve springs), Schumacher the HB6 (pneumatic valve springs). that makes - in the same environment - max. 500 rpm or 5% more power. a difference of 30 hp is more likely that the 100 you quote.
