In 2005, i spend 15 days camping in the grass of the castle with a Belgian youth movement (Les Scouts). Lots of memories... It's funny how the place are changed ! Now, it's a 5 stars hotel^^
Ok, this is not a lie, but really funny to read so i recomend you do. I am part of the O'Sullivan family, and in the 16 hundreds we owned a castle just next to this one, The O'Sullivan caastle. This was at the time when the british were invading. The british came, killed most of my relatives, and the rest fled. in the 1920's the IRA burnt part of our castle. Then while they were rebuilding this hotel, they stole our bricks.
THIS IS NO JOKE, so...... GIVE ME MY BRICKS BACK! :):)
You must never have been to Dunboy but as someone who grew up there and played in Puxleys mansion and in the fort nearby which was the O Sullivan stronghold destroyed in 1602 by the British I think I am familiar with the place. In 1921, the local branch of the IRA did come and burn Puxley Mansion, this was never O Sullivans castle, they are two different buildings entirely. None of the Puxley family were in the building when it was destroyed.
why is this called Dunboy Castle, when it is in fact 'Puxley's Mansion'. Owned previously by a John Puxley, who was shot by one the O'Sullivan clan. As stated here, the real Dunboy (blown up and destroyed by the english !) lies in ruins on the edge of the water. Just seems disrespectful to the O'Sullivan clan to have it misreprsented like this, when so many of our clansmen gave their lives in defence of Dunboy, only to have an englishmans hotel named after it !
I stumbled across this video by chance and what wonderful memories came flooding back. From 1968-1972 I lived very near to Dunboy and as kids it was the backdrop to such fun and games. I used to try and imagine what it would be like in the old days and what the ladies would look like twirling round the dance floor with those great marble pillars.Although it as been restored and looks wonderful I am glad I have the happy memories off the old castle.
