@Assassinscreed0925 Actually, the economy in the 1980's was A LOT better than it is now and better than when Carter was in office. I remember Ronald Reagan. He was a great president. He loved this country. Research the man because what you say sounds very ignorant when it comes to the subject of Ronald Reagan. Sounds like you get your information from those who, I personally believe, hate this country!
@Assassinscreed0925 Unemployment rates during the Reagan presidency: 1980: 7.0% 1981: 7.5% 1982: 9.5% 1983: 9.5% 1984: 7.4% 1985: 7.1% 1986: 6.9% 1987: 6.1% 1988: 5.4% 1989: 5.2% President Reagan oversaw more economic growth during his tenure than any other president before him, or after.
Does anybody remember or even know that the 4 powers, France, England, US and the Soviet Union agreed to split up Berlin after WWII ? Unknowingly, I am sure, that action gave the Soviet Union way too much power.
When the wall finally did come down we cut US troops on German soil from 750,000 to 50,000. I hope we did not make a mistake when we did that.
@Fraulein2901 the problem wasnt that berlin was separated between the 4 powers, its that the soviets blocked their half from the rest of the world and surpressed some of their freedoms
Great, freedom-loving pres. who spoke from the heart w/ determined faith that encouraged these Germans & brought tears to Chancellor Kohl. Pres Reagan's German--great! Many prayed for E. We have become the laughing stock of the world, our own people hate our country...
Reagan was the absolute best modern President ever ! What a fantastic and powerful speech. A great leader who stood up for what he believed. God bless Reagan.
Reaganomics lifted the U.S. out of the Carter recession, it was military spending that cost the big bucks, but a small price to pay for the fall of world Communism in the minds of Conservatives (and military spending is an acceptable expense for Conservatives, it one of the things the government IS actually supposed to do). Medicare and Medicaid were here before Reagan, were defended by the Democratic Congress, and was not going to be plausibly removed.
We missed the mark. John McCain, if I remember right, could have been elected as the new oldest President ever (only by a few years). And from what I see, the older you are, there's more power you have, there's more experience you have, and there ain't nobody who messes with you. Looking at Ronald Reagan here, he was 76 and he was making a revolutionary speech. The U.S. could definitely benefit from a much older and more experienced President.
At any rate, he made real success, and he inspired the American people.
Democrat, Republican, it doesn't matter. What matters is that he helped make the nation willing to move forward, and in the end neither economic, domestic, or foreign policy matters as much as that.
@ebturner66 What happened to you guys? As a Canadian, I am cautious about what I say here. Your country stood for so much with President Reagan. With Obama? Apologies for everything--I think, sometimes apologies for being America! What happened? What happened to your space endeavours? Wow!
What happened to this country? I don't recognize my country anymore. We need a spiritual and economic awakening, or Orwell's "newspeak" will take over.
I honestly can't belive your using Ronald Reagen's Berlin Speech to give Obama props for nothing besides Osama he hasnt done anything. It's also definatly an oversight to downplay Reagan's role in the fall of the Soviet Union every president during the Cold War did Their part its not some more than others. Do you think Gorbachev would of implemented glastnost and perestroika if a more passive man was president? Obama wants to take land from israel and make and even bigger mess. Reagan > Obama!!
@seenoevil760 i agree with you, obama is just the worse president we have ever had BY FAR he's all talk and no do, i cannot wait to turn 18 so i can vote!!!
@seenoevil760 Reagan was the first President to challenge the legitamacy of the Soviet Union which it strived for. He abhored "detente" and "containment". He thought we could win the Cold War, which no other American president had the gall to say. That is why Reagan deserves credit for the fall of the Soviet Union.
I'll admit Reagan was a great president. However, he had the luxury of being president during the final years of the Soviet Union as it was in its death throes. Let's not forget JFK speech at Berlin, which was at the peak of the Cold War. Also, let's not forget that Obama inherited a country that was already in a huge mess. Lets not forget that Obama said that it might not even take a term or two terms. To fix this country. I support Obama and change will happen question is how long will it take
@Guantan45 When Reagan took office the country was in worse shape than it was when Obama took office. Also in the amount of time where Obama has yet to create a single job Reagan changed an over 10% unemployment to 7% unemployment.
@Guantan45 obama does bring out that optimism in ppl. I've had enough bs though. liberals like 2 call Republicans crazy war-hungry maniacs, and yet Reagan help bring down the soviets without pointless armed conflicts, while obamas all full of empty promises of bringing home the troops and gets us involved in libya and shit. there's no need 4 this war ppl. I'm no hippie, but come on, less government intervention in all aspects, please! non-intervention in foreign, social and economical policies!
I love this speech. It's not technical, didn't really have any complex ideas, he just spoke of the injustices of the Soviet Union, the advances under capitalism, and his want for all people to have everything that we as Americans have.
It takes a carter to get to a Reagan. I just pray that the people of this great nation can elect someone as great as Reagan to fix what obama has done.
Remember when there were real men around? For all you men out there, a real woman wants a real man. You go Reagan! I love you! "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Guess what happened? That wall was torn down.
Its that last words of RR that do the real trick for me. Thats his personal thouch, the rest is beautifull but speechwriters stuff. His las 'word', is where he improvised on the best and most truthfull verbalization of the political devision between 'the west and the rest'! DEMOCRACY!
@bimhimbim i'm not sure how many people believe that this speech was the cause. We do take credit for leading the revolution away from socialists and communism via an economic and arms technology race.
We are much more clear on who is responsible for the holocaust.
After the Carter years, the military was demoralized and the country was in a deep funk. Then came Reagan and made us feel so proud to serve America again. You don't get to pick your commander-in-chief except with your individual vote...but I was extremely proud to serve under Reagan and decided to make a career of the military becasue of his inspiring leadership. May he rest in eternal peace.
"East and West do no mistrust each other because we're armed. We're armed because we mistrust each other." Reagan was as much a politician as he was a poet. That speech does more than communicate, it's a work of art.
Yes he was a great leader-thank god we had another ally in Margaret Thatcher as British PM,and and the moral support of Pope John Paul, all at the same time-3 of the greatest proponents of freedom at once in the 1980's-and the wall came down...because of them.......no honest person can deny their courage and determination-I was there.
the marshall plan -- bomb germany to dust and then generously develop a marshall plan to rebuild it -- american logic! god bless america, what would we have done without your help???
I am a Canadian in my mid 30's and even though I was only 12 yrs. old at the time of this speech I still remember fondly, even as a boy,a president whom I believed was the greatest man in the world. As I have grown, learned more about the world, and changed my opinions in several ways, one thing has become a truth for me. President Reagan had some faults and he made some mistakes, like all of God's children, but I truly believe he was possibly the greatest man of the 20th century, along with Churchill.
I was at Bradenberg Gate last summer (May 2010) and the first thing I thought of when I got there was this speech by the greatest President ever. It was just great to see the sight where one of the greatest speeches of all time happened.
To be honest this is the first time I've heard this speech -- its the first of any of Reagan's speeches I've heard. I'm 22 years old, and I decided to listen to Reagan the first time after my boyfriend's mother suggested it. I'm glad I did. He's a wonderful speaker.
I still remember listening his talk in VOA as I was then a sophomore. Whenever his talk aired in VOA I listened with great joy because he is one leader i admire most.I still remember his state of the union address in the morning at around 7 O'clock and his sound lingers in my ear clear and sound. When he was reelected second time too I listened the story with great joy because he has got a charisma by which he inspired the people and laid the foundation for a stable US. Ron,You are great .
Wonderful speech ! I sincerely wish we had leaders like Reagan today - a truly freedom loving American who took pride in his own country. He was truly the best modern President ever. God Bless Ronald Reagan.
All the other Presidents just pale in comparison to him. I admire him so much, I even have his picture at my desk. I don't care what my liberals coworkers think. I just feel so proud we had Ronald Reagan as our President.
@mmoraleslisboa Me too! I have two posters of President Reagan in my garage just at the entrance going into my home. When people come to my home they just stand there, stare at him and start to reminisce. I was proud to vote for this man twice! The way he carried himself throughout the world made me so proud to be an American!
I'm in no position to pass judgement on any American president but for me Reagan will always be the embodiment of how leaders should be. I lived under communism and each time I saw him on TV he gave us hope that one day our ordeal would end.
Oh, Mr. Reagan, I never got to live under your Presidency, I never knew you when you knew yourself, but You were a great man, & will forever, be immortalized as an amazing President! With the current puppet we have in the White House right now, destroying a country you worked so hard to keep alive and took such pride in, I long for another great man like you! Dear God, please save a nation that is crumbling with "tolerance and liberal thinking!" God Bless You Mr. Reagan, May you Rest in Peace
Gah.. After having softy Barack Obama in office for over a year now, it's hard to imagine that we used to have presidents that took pride in the American way and weren't afraid to be proud.
This is proof than when you take a stand, you create greatness. The way I see it, there is no greatness in D.C., and won't be until the right people fianlly take a stand.
Few truly great men have lived in my lifetime, even fewer great leaders - President Reagan was among them. As a child I looked up to the President as an example of character, courage, and wisdom.
The United States is in need of such a leader now, President Reagan I miss you.
He did this because he had the best military in the whole world behind him. History so far gives no recognition to the veterans of this war. I think we need to do something about this while they are still alive. You were my commander while I served and think he is hte greatest president of all time. May god bless your soul, mr.president, R.I.P.
The hypocrisy of all of the conservatives, especially Sarah Palin, who tout this as one of the greatest American President speeches of all time, while simultaneously calling for the building of our own wall to "restrict the free passage of ordinary men and women" is astounding,
@kswifts1 even though i know its been a year since you stated this i bet you are still just as stupid. The Berlin wall stopped people from leaving we want to make a wall to stop illegals from entering illegally. Do you know the difference? Let me put it this way any one (illegal or legal) or always welcome to leave anytime they want and dont have to worry about being riddled with bullets.
Praise God for men like President Reagan. Willing to stand up like a man and do what is right. They don't make them like they used to. "Tear down this wall"
Ronald Reagan had a kind of leadership that we simply cannot comprehend today. He was the kind of leader that we needed at the right time. I feel as time goes on he will be set as the standard of governance not only for U.S. presidents, but for leaders throughout the world.
It wasn't, contrary to popular belief. Glasnost, the Russian word for openness and free speech especially related to government, is what brought down the Soviet Union.
Obama hated the day the Berlin Wall fell...if it were up to him he would put it back up! that's why he didnt visit on the 20 year anniversary of it coming down.
I am wondering why people give a lot of hands down to this speech. It is great speech. A very great one. It is the past, present, and of all the speeches. Seriously! the best one. He is one of my favorite president. :)
@spursrock2121 I do not agree. Gorbachev was the single reason to the end of the Cold War. He was the one separating the Soviet Union from the satellit states in the East Bloc. Gorbachev was the one introducing democracy (at the extent it was possible at that time) via his reforms. He was the one "securing" the implosion of the Soviet Union, that secured democracy for the Soviets. I do not agree that the SDI was the reason to the end of the war, but - of course - this is open for diskussion. :-)
I loved Reagan, too bad he didn't have the foresight to really know that freedom includes, rights for women, rights for gays and rights for other minorities. RIP Reagan, we'll finish the work you started.
Even though I'm only 14 I've read alot about what Reagan did and am proud to have had a man like him as president. This man will have always been a great president. Amen...
This is a great speech and all US Presidents should have to watch or read it. They need to follow it, like the part were we have weapons to destroy them, That is what brought them to the arms reduction talks, NOT lets give up our weapons and defense and they will follow suit, like Obama's plan is.
This speech is President Reagan at his finest. He knew that the desire to be free cannot be surpressed forever and pledged that the US (while not perfect) would stand with freedom. Where does President Obama stand? Iran, Honduras, China, Iraq, Afghanistan?
During the recent events commemorating the tearing down of the Berlin wall, I don't think Uncle Ronnie's name came up once. You can ignore history, you can revise history, but you can't change it. Obama couldn't be a zit on this man's butt.
Why do we have government, money, an laws? Yes I know the world would be corrupt without them but if people would just have common sense and respect this would be a nice world. I guess that's just called world peace, but I guess world peace is heaven.
Mr. Khrushchev said we will bury you, I don't subscribe to his point of view; believe me when I say to you, I hope the Russians love their children too - Sting; Do you remember the fear? Do not forget. Mr. B. Hussein Obama - could you imagine him trying to lead this country, no, the WORLD? President Reagan, I wish you were here today.
One of the greatest speeches ever ! The greatest President for freedom ever. To bad these words of courage were not mention during the 20th Anniversary speech given by Hillary (OMG) Clinton in Berlin. One can not up-stage the Messiah Obama.
Compare Reagan to the publicity seeking moron now occupying the White House who did not even bother to come to Berlin and who is manipulated at will by Russians, Chinese and Iranians.
11:16 "Open this gate" and "Tare down this wall."

Contrast this with Obama's disgraceful response to courageous popular opposition to repression in Iran and Honduras.

I just feel so proud we had Ronald Reagan as our President.
mmoraleslisboa 1 year ago 2
@mmoraleslisboa Me too! I have two posters of President Reagan in my garage just at the entrance going into my home. When people come to my home they just stand there, stare at him and start to reminisce. I was proud to vote for this man twice! The way he carried himself throughout the world made me so proud to be an American!

I'm in no position to pass judgement on any American president but for me Reagan will always be the embodiment of how leaders should be. I lived under communism and each time I saw him on TV he gave us hope that one day our ordeal would end.

What happened to people like him?
and can we get them back?
i sure hope so!

The hypocrisy of all of the conservatives, especially Sarah Palin, who tout this as one of the greatest American President speeches of all time, while simultaneously calling for the building of our own wall to "restrict the free passage of ordinary men and women" is astounding,
kswifts1 1 year ago
@kswifts1 even though i know its been a year since you stated this i bet you are still just as stupid. The Berlin wall stopped people from leaving we want to make a wall to stop illegals from entering illegally. Do you know the difference? Let me put it this way any one (illegal or legal) or always welcome to leave anytime they want and dont have to worry about being riddled with bullets.

It wasn't, contrary to popular belief. Glasnost, the Russian word for openness and free speech especially related to government, is what brought down the Soviet Union.

This is a great speech and all US Presidents should have to watch or read it. They need to follow it, like the part were we have weapons to destroy them, That is what brought them to the arms reduction talks, NOT lets give up our weapons and defense and they will follow suit, like Obama's plan is.
