I don't think TFIOS had anything about desert islands in the first draft. Everything else is probably legit.

I went to one of these conferences, but it was in Texas about 2 years ago. I was so amazed when the people running the stands would just give you free books that weren't even in stores yet. The day of the conference was probably the best day of my life.
