Poachers are not the biggest threat to elephants currently. Elephants are. While total populations are lower than they were decades ago, the average population DENSITY of Elepantss has gone up. What little African wilderness remains can't support feeding habits of dense elephant populations. Elephants are eating three times the trees per sq km, and these trees do not grow back quickly. Elephants are causing deforestation, and by side effect, the drought mentioned in the video.

The point I'm making is this: If you want to save elephants, you must cull them to reduce population densities. This can be done in two ways.

A) Via the expensive and troublesome process of flying over them in helicopters and pelting them with darts full of chemical contraceptives.

B) Via the cheaper and self-sustaining method of simply shooting the animals dead, then selling the meat and ivory to the government to provide a return of investment costs.

Charities can rarely cover the cost of A.
