I have an Inspiron 8200. Its a 6 year+ model. Still working although the HDD is probably dying on me. But still working. As for customer service, no issue dealing with them. The few times I did they got back to me pretty quick. Not to mention delivery was really quick. Within 7 days. A friend had dead pixel on its laptop screen, Dell technician changed his screen the next day at his place. I'm from Asia Pacific. Maybe we get better customer service?
sweet laptop!! im stuck between the mini 9 & the S10.. i'd buy the linux version of the mini 9.. The Lenovo S10 can be purchased with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop.. Though my plan would be to put openSUSE on either the mini 9 or S10 after I get one..
My friend has this laptop with ubuntu linux and I'm thinking about ordering the same too, glad this one does not have vista, which i want to get away from, He sure likes his! I just prepared a few thumb drives with pics and wma music files for the time when I order mine soon! This would be a perfect pc for internet, youtube & facebook! So now I can finally put the vista away and I been wanting to try ubuntu linux!
Do you hassle foreigners about the pronunciation of English words as well? There's nothing hard about saying Ubuntu if you know how it's pronounced, but it's not an English word, so you can't expect an English speaking person to be able to sound it out.
i ordered mine today, and it says it will arrive on APRIL 17TH?!!!! does anyone know, if it will REALLY take this long? i did standard shipping which is 3 to 5 business days,,.,,,
i would go with ubuntu because new versions are released every few months and its free. while windows xp is really getting old and outdated not to mention it's virus stricken!.
vista probly wouldent be good on this because it's to resource hungry and the idea of this is to keep power consumption to a minimum
and i beleive once windows 7 is released and it fails like vista that will finally be the last nail in microsofts coffin .
as you can see big computer manufacturers are starting to include linux as an option .
but what would really kill windows off once and for all is if apple would just design their leopard o/s for pc's to work out of the box because lets face it no one wants to pay $1000+ for a mac when they can pay like $200 for a pc and put iatkos on it.
it's only used in the "majority" of computers because there are to many primitive people like you that are to narrow minded to bother exploring another o/s .
i bet you have never even used linux. not that it would matter your tiny brain wouldent be able to to use it anyway.
just stick to windows and spewing you ignorant verbal diarrhea on youtube about shit you know nothing about.
It doesn't take intelligence to use Linux. It takes a relatively good memory though, because apparently Linux users like all those pointless CLI commands more than just using a GUI. People give Linux too much slack just because it's free. There's a few thousand known viruses and exploits for Linux, it's not stable, it has application crashes all the time, and has a user base consisting of anti-social teens who think they're making a difference by not using Windows.
You probably used Ubuntu, I noticed that Ubuntu applications crash a lot, at least compared to other distros. They just kind of "fade out" greyscale and stop responding. And the user base being made up of wannabe rebels is partially true, but that doesn't mean the community is any less friendly, it's certainly better than TheVistaForums...
TheVistaForums is full of idiots as far as I can tell, I've gone there a few times and all the threads are stupid and the responses I get are no help at all. But that doesn't make up everyone who uses Vista, only the people who have to go to the public forum and ask for help, which isn't everyone. Where as everyone who uses Ubuntu goes to their forums because it's the only one available and the only real source of information online about the os, where there's tons of sites about Vista...
windows is all GUI you take a windows user and put him on a linux machine and they are lost without that little start button to lead the way.
also all administration privillages require sudo password unlike on a windows machine if you are logged in as admin you can do whatever you want so that combined with the trillions of windows viruses makes it the most unstable o/s ever!
You don't understand the concept of stability. You think having to enter a password to install a program is a good thing. Being harder to use isn't a plus, and just because it is GUI based doesn't make it easier to use, it just makes it more visual. I'd rather highlight a file and hit the delete key than run the command line "cd /Desktop, sudo rm -rf /example.exe", which is necessary is certain distros. Viruses are a nonexistent issue for Windows, I can't believe some people managed to get them.
I've really never found a reason to use Linux besides lower entry requirements. I boot Ubuntu 8.04 from a flash drive at my schools because the computers are really slow, but other than that I don't see any advantages to it in terms of the alleged security or stability the Unix/Linux cores all claim to have. I've had more stability problems with Linux than Windows, specifically with programs randomly quitting, I notice that's more of a problem specific to Ubuntu though...
well there are various reasons one might want to use a linux based distro .
i understand that most people would not consider it a replacement o/s but i beleive thats onlt because the computer world is basically designed with windows in mind.i.e. games, exe apps, etc etc.
i however beleive you are wrong about its security.because most hackers know the majority of people they want to hack are running windows so thats about all they bother to program viruses for.
Linux is amazing, but personally I like Mac OSX. Ubuntu is the next best choice, unless you are going for gaming. I think XP or vista is best for gaming.
$300 to $500. if you're really really tight on the budget, there's a cheap netbook for only $99 called Jointech JL7..something. I don't recommend the Jointech because it has the guts of a PDA, 64 mb HDD, and 64 MB ram
oh there is no money problem i already have a nice comp but i want a laptop that is easy to carry with me to school, and a laptop that is durable and wont damage easily.
It's well documented on the web. Do a google search for 'run leopard on a dell mini 9'. One thing, you should probably get a runcore 32GB or more SSD, since MacOSX takes up like 16GB.
Me too!!!! hahahhah xD Im watching all videos... =D I hope this can help me a lot in classroom and little games in time that Im not studing xD ahhahaha
guys, ubuntu comes with open office, which is an open source alternative to microsoft word. for the basic user, it is the same thing. (its actually more familiar to use than office 2007)
can anybody help me... does the mini 9 come with a notepad or something that u can type a paper on that u can print like a wordpad or a notepad if so please comment back thx....
are you using windows or ubuntu, if you are using windows i can send you a link, if you are using ubuntu i can send you instructions on how to download a video editor for ubuntu.
do you know if there is any other mini laptop that includes a cd/dvd player for a reletively cheap price? i have been saving up for one to take to college.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this thing is pretty useless I bought one. it was supposed to be $99 with an XPS it ended up being $329! wow go dell. I got pwned! but seriously its neat but if you are going to have a laptop anyways get a nice one. this is more like a toy. There not even a functioning calendar on it.
Regardless, this is a very efficient system if you simply need for projects that require visual aids(powerpoints), writing documents, and maybe even storing a little music. However, I don't think there is a cd/dvd drive which kind of dampens my excitement. If this could serve as a mini dvd player, I'd be much happier.
if you have this laptop [or if you dont, but know this answer], DDOES THIS REALLY COME WITH GAMES ON TH UBUNTU VERSION??? because i asked buyers ON EBAY, AND FROM DELL AND THE \Y ALL SAID IT DOESNT... PLEASE HELP... I WANT TO BUY THIS!!!
does this mean that the netbook doesnt come with the games, but you must get them off of like a website especially for the dell netbook, like what apple does for macs[widgets]?
get the dell, the a lot of people seem to like the acer more, but they seem like a weird brand, they seem kind of unknown and cheap, dell looks like they at least made it out of thick plastic lol
So I just got my mini9. It has bluetooth and I would like to use my 50 inch lcd tv in my livingroom as a monitor as I sit on my couch surfing the web. Can I do this wirelessly without a patchcord??? If so, what do I need to do???
should I get this? I wonder if you could vid chat on aim with it? cuz I know with ubuntu the only client you could do that with is skype but not through pidgin =(
This keyboard is driving me nuts. Unlike many bloggers and messenger/texters out there, I actually use my function keys and my apostrophe/quotes. The function keys now only work with the Fn key pushed (which I'm getting kinda used to) but the apostrophe key is way down by the spacebar. Strongly thinking about changing this out for a mini 12 which has a regular keyboard.
You don't really buy any netbook to type essays but it doesn't matter. Dell didn't do anything to set this apart from any other netbooks, the only difference between this and it's competitors is that it's really glossy and has a shit keyboard. People are just freaking out and worshiping it because Dell made it, and because it looks cool. With the Samsung NC10, Aspire One and HP Mini 1000 all on the market, there's really no reason to waste your money on the mini 9.
Very nice video and understanding. On my website you can have access to online texting for free to anyone to use. Create a contact list of friends. Just click on my profile.

The Dell has no moving parts, so it is pretty tough.

U can put Mac OS X on it!
poswoll 2 years ago
are you serious?! how!!
mandres 2 years ago
It's well documented on the web. Do a google search for 'run leopard on a dell mini 9'. One thing, you should probably get a runcore 32GB or more SSD, since MacOSX takes up like 16GB.

guys, ubuntu comes with open office, which is an open source alternative to microsoft word. for the basic user, it is the same thing. (its actually more familiar to use than office 2007)

Need to hurry up and get that speedy Chrome browser out for linux... this thing would be SET without the (somewhat) sluggish Firefox.
jakswa 3 years ago
One thing you could do in Firefox is hit F11 to maximize the window. It looks like that would increase the viewing area of web pages by about 25%.

this thing is pretty useless I bought one. it was supposed to be $99 with an XPS it ended up being $329! wow go dell. I got pwned! but seriously its neat but if you are going to have a laptop anyways get a nice one. this is more like a toy. There not even a functioning calendar on it.
nero21 3 years ago
its linux. you can put whatever the heck you want on it. thousands upon thousands of installable addons, right from the repository. plus, all free.
jakswa 3 years ago
Regardless, this is a very efficient system if you simply need for projects that require visual aids(powerpoints), writing documents, and maybe even storing a little music. However, I don't think there is a cd/dvd drive which kind of dampens my excitement. If this could serve as a mini dvd player, I'd be much happier.

can you get itunes on these things?
Jayeff1616 3 years ago
mizt3rman,
You can load all the games you want.
Just use the synaptic repository and load all the open source game that you want and more.
You can even make a backup of your Dell with Ubuntu by using Remastersys
pcdoctor01 3 years ago
pcdoctor01,
does this mean that the netbook doesnt come with the games, but you must get them off of like a website especially for the dell netbook, like what apple does for macs[widgets]?

get the dell, the a lot of people seem to like the acer more, but they seem like a weird brand, they seem kind of unknown and cheap, dell looks like they at least made it out of thick plastic lol

Dell just had to give this the worst netbook keyboard ever...
LuckyNibb 3 years ago
This keyboard is driving me nuts. Unlike many bloggers and messenger/texters out there, I actually use my function keys and my apostrophe/quotes. The function keys now only work with the Fn key pushed (which I'm getting kinda used to) but the apostrophe key is way down by the spacebar. Strongly thinking about changing this out for a mini 12 which has a regular keyboard.
flatscreen83 3 years ago
Just re-map the keys....
Gondee 3 years ago
I hope you didn't but this to type essays.
Gondee 3 years ago
You don't really buy any netbook to type essays but it doesn't matter. Dell didn't do anything to set this apart from any other netbooks, the only difference between this and it's competitors is that it's really glossy and has a shit keyboard. People are just freaking out and worshiping it because Dell made it, and because it looks cool. With the Samsung NC10, Aspire One and HP Mini 1000 all on the market, there's really no reason to waste your money on the mini 9.
