Sure it's lagging, it's rendering 3d objects in realtime.. You need a good graphics-accelerator card to do that fast.

At least I would say that's why it lags.. :)

Hmm, maybe the algorithm to calculate the position is not that good or the image capturing and identifying of the marker takes too long. If every marker stands for another object, the identifying process could be very complex. I actually don't now which grafics-accelerator card used in the iphone, so i don't now. It has a 400 something MHz processor, so that could be the reason.. Rendering 3d objects in realtime AND analysing the position of the phone takes time.

....Using the ARToolKit you need to know the position of the camera and the angle of the marker to the camera to generate the object, because the object is always created in relation to the position of the marker.

Look for qr codes in the world, or buy special codes from stores. When you point your phone at the codes, you see the monster you can win, by defeating it with something?? Guns? Your own creatures pokemon style? Or something else :)

When you win the battle, you add the monster to your collection, in the PC(and mac) core game (Darkspore?)

That's just my idea.

Or how about robot suits that uses this technology to make the world around you more exciting, like in sci-fi movies. Now we don't need neon-signs and loud music, they can stream that to your personal suit, and you can turn it down if it annoys you etc.

Lets say you have to fix a bulldozer. there are lots of different models. you point to a decal in a specific device, then the phone automaticaly download the spares reference and show you the pieces inside even without open the thing.

In a scenario like this, the price of the phone and the framerate is irrelevant...

so many irrelevant comments here, the point of this is to show 3d interaction using the Papervision 3D renderer with flash. it has nothing to do with iphone initially. This guy has just decided to make an app with it.

However I do like what he's done by allowing the user to place objects in the 3d world. Thats very cool.

You need to do some background reading. This has nothing to do with Papervision3D. It's ARToolKit (well known computer graphics engine). It's been running on mobile devices for a while, but its awesome that its coming to the iPhone.

Looks interesting and all.. specially working on a cellphone, this could turn up to be the next step for QRCodes.

But isn't this a 1:1 port from the original ARToolKit software?

Also, when it says "Multitouch gestural interaction"... it looks more like a port of the original demos than a truly multitouch example. After all, the video shows only ONE touch a time.

But anyways, keep it up! Dunno if you'll get much better results on the iPhone, but the research will be useful for future phones.

There are lots of applications in imaging. E.g. google "medical augmented reality". This particular work is focussed on getting AR working well on a multimodal handheld device. As the video says, applications are coming. :-)
