Good information here, but it's deceptively simplistic. It fails to acknowledge the sheer volume of information it's leaving out, giving (I think) a false impression about how much work it takes.
Aside from that, it also NEEDS the three absolute rules of writing: you need to read a lot; you need to write a lot; take every other rule as a suggestion, not a law.

Writing Fiction. (Title of book). Based on a course presented in NYC, the Gotham Writers' Workshop.
It held my hand all the way through writing my book which is now almost finished. Three earlier attempts with different stories stopped dead in their early tracks because I always had the feeling I didn't have the foggiest what I was doing. What was expected of me.
'Writing fiction' tells all in a fantastic way. Many, many exercises. And you can reread it or parts of it again and again...
This is really handy. It may not be for everyone, everyone has their own methods of writing, just like everyone has their own methods of learning, but in regarding script writing and acting, we used a lot of these techniques in class, and I've carried them over to my writing. Writing in scenes is a really great way to break writer's block.
After having purchased the Novel Writing Made Easy system, which has been outlined here in a 6 minute power-point presentation, I can assure those of you who are questioning the methods and/or the credentials of Andrea Rains Waggener, that this system works. My writing has improved tenfold simply by listening to the audios and doing the daily writing practices defined in the system. Truly, this is just the introduction. The task is not simple, but it helps to have a paint-by-numbers guide :)
writing a novel or a script is not easy it is hard work the best way to write a novel is brainstorm your ideas first on paper and then just write and write and write everyday the more you write the more fluid your ideas become you will get writers block and stub your toes a couple of times but thats ok thats normal persistance makes for proficency in writing.
@doctorw2 I totally agree that If you want to write a novel is not easy stuff which writers emphasize --Just only writing and write that the secret of writers being successful, I firmly believe.
I think in writing the key is to how utilize the brainstorm ideas and jot it down well. That's what I personally experienced. If one able to do that effectively, he can become an excellent writer.
Writing a short story is never easy, how much more writing a novel. You're steps are quite helpful for beginners. I'm interested on the 'story questions'. This is one of the reasons why Harry Potter became famous since it makes readers curious. Each book has its secrets revealed. :)
"When the man walked out of the shack the sun was on the top of the sky. It shined at his face like a thousand golden spears striking down on its enemy. The man had no quest. No goal. Yes, writing can be broken down like this but if you do too much planning the actual writing itself gets tedious and boring. It's not easy to write a novel if you've made it boring for yourself. It's much better to just give yourself an basic structure and flesh it out as you go along.

Sorry to say, but the "painting by numbers" thing at the end ruined the video. This makes novel writing seem like a completely step by step thing that has a very specific structure, which is not at all what it is.
you loose weight because its healthy. there is nothing healthy about being fat. there is nothing good about being unhealthy. therefore there is nothing good about being fat. relative perspective or not. her novel theme is an evil lie.
@riichards no, because the fat people happen to be tribal and african does not make it anymore beautiful. i think i made my point that the morality of fatness is not subjective.
@gracer99 at least you know it's a "lie" from the beginning, since it is called "fiction". You should direct your anger at those who lie to you and convince you it's the truth... I don't have to mention any names or organizations who specialize in doing that.. in this day and age people should be able to figure that out on their own...
Andrea, thank you for posting this video...I've found it to be very informative and helpful! I've found that writing a novel can be overwhelming at times and this video has encouraged me to keep at it. (By the way, I enjoyed your novel, Alternate Beauty. What a facinating concept! ) Thanks again for this wonderful video....
Everyone who is reading this comment, please click on my username for my videos I made about the The Truth of the World. I have found out what the truth of life is, the truth of the world, and the truth of God. Please, I really want people to watch and listen what I have to say. No more living in false reality, no more living in illusions, no more thinking there is no way out......its time to lead your life into The Truth of the World!!!!!!!!!
I have a problem watching these kinds of videos on youtube xD Whenever you say something I start thinking about my story and stop paying attention to what your saying and I end up having to rewind it and watch again :P
I'm not much of a story writer but do enjoy to read. I had an idea to write a story but couldn't finish it, so I started a webstie called STORYJOIN It allows you to create stories with other members. You start a story and others finish it for you, it's fun to see how the story ends.
I made an account on your site--PutItOnPaper. You need to consider integrating more to the story editors options. For example, the amount of characters per paragraph is too limited. Consider easing the limit significantly. The last thing you want to do is restrict peoples options and force them to curtail their work. Next, consider adding a note adding feature. As people contribute to the story, they need to be able to easily communicate with future contributors. A side note would be convenient.
And finally, weigh your own grammatical abilities. It seems to me that you get comma happy when you write and it puts too many unnecessary pauses in the script. Other than the aforementioned, not a bad idea for a website. It's almost like a wikipedia for novelists.
Not how i'd do it really but ok... the scene card idea isn't my cup of tea especially as characters move from place to place, if you shuffle this all about then you get lost.
Bios I like though. A lot. A synopsis is done at the end though, it's a summery, not a skeleton. But writing a rough skeleton is a good idea, just a wording issue for me.
Writing without any idea of what's coming next is a very bad idea. Mixed feelings about this 'tutorial' to be honest.
in six and a half minutes of watching i've realised that the novel I was planning to write wasn't very good and should rethink. good job i searched for expertise!
heres 2 more ideas that may help, they wont hurt so no harm in hogging comments, Brian Eno when working on a U2 album said when they had laid 12 songs down, he then took the weakest/worst track and worked on it till it was the best, and on and on strengthening the album, you could apply that process to chapters, also if cant get started and this also helps get your intent across clearer is to make comments and replies on utube, it does improve the waffling, clarity, removal of the unneccasary.
i came to this vid as i saw something that wound me up on the internet and was looking for a place where the like minded would rub me shoulders and comment i agree, that site is a load of cac, but this is not the place so i wont tell, i wont, i really wont. another writers block idea, i wonder if you take a famous blockbuster and you just rewrote it sentence by sentence using ur words, of course dif pronouns, i wonder if it would sell, coz if its just about makin money, y not do that?
fuck systems, systems are just a way to salve the ire of writers block, makes you feel your being constructive, getting somewhere. if ur stuck.. write a novel by not writing a novel, by that i mean exercises and experiments, like write 3 different paragraphs about just say a person taking off their coat, 1 version straight descript, another making it feel like peeling a banana, 1 where its a metaphor 4 exposing soul. no rules just experiment and you may chance upon urself in your words.
i've been working on my novel for roughly a year now, and all the problems i run into have to deal with my poor organization of ideas. this video helped out a lot. thanks!!!
This is very good. Every process needs guideposts, and novel writing is no different. If you just wander around writing a lot of words, it might be entertaining for a while, but if you don't take the reader somewhere, you won't hold their interest.
Nice. Hey, my channel has many free lessons in writing, from plotting, to show and tell, to creating suspense. Just click my nick, and then browse my playlist. People say they've learned more from my videos than they ever did taking writing courses. That makes me feel good.
If you enjoy my vids, spread the word.
Feel free to post a video response of one of your videos.
Fuck this, it's way to technical. A story has to come from some desire within you to express your emotions. A writer is an artist, she makes it seem like a trade or some kind of technical skill. This is not for me.
For anyone really wanting to write a novel, you should totally read On Writing by Stephan King. I have yet to find a better book on writing.
For me, this is way too complicated of a system, I'm more of a "one word after another" kind of guy. I would go crazy if I had to add index cards into the picture.
Dividing a big task into smaller ones is always a good idea, of course, but I wouldn't call it "dumbing down". Writing a novel can be easy or it can be the most excruciating thing ever. It all depends on your talent, your background, the complexity of the story and your goals.
I agree. There are too many "paint by number" books out there already. And whats all this: "A good novel makes characters lives miserable before everything turns out in the end . . ." It sounds like the sort of cookie cutter writing that puts people to sleep. I like books that challenge me and make me feel something.
Well, you wouldn't want them to be happy, and stay happy. That's boring. For example, the book is about a family roadtrip around the country. Would you rather read about their excellent sights and rather lenient traffic, or about the struggles that they would encounter: broken down vehicle, not enough money, maybe a homicidal hitchhiker. It's all about conflict->resolution.
I have to admit I cringed at your idea: "obese woman finds herself in an alternate universe where fat is beautiful." Then, "she loses weight but is still unhappy."
That's the ol' self-development gimmick with a simple reversal twist right there.
A premise like that is tricky to get right. Instead of starting with a story that leads to self-development, that premise starts with self-development and any accompanying story may feel tacked on. It's cheap to conceive but costs in the long run.
It could be said that writing is an expression of mind, and therefore a rule-oriented approach would appeal to a rule-oriented mind.
Besides which, writing is built on language and language is rule-based. Writing is not solely a set of rules but neither is it complete chaos. Moderation in all things, etc.
You have to find your own "rules", not folow someone else's. That's why a lot of people try to write folowing these guidelines and can't get anything done, it just might not work for them. If you are begining to write you need to WRITE, not think about a plot scructure or anything else. You can folow EVERY one of these steps and still write something HORRIBLE: The "x factor" is work, not rules.
Indeed, but a starting writer is much like a child. The rules are an unknown. We begin by copying other people's rules, then pick and choose the bits that we like to make up our own rules.
So, in summary, I wouldn't recommend following JUST these rules in isolation, but listen to this any anything else you can find, assimilate as much data as you can and let your subconcious sort it out.
I'll draw an analogy to punk music. Many of the bands that I love started out as punk bands, but did not end up so. Punk was a deconstruction of music, eschewing the elitism of overblown 70s rock (some of which I like, too). It's a stepping stone to understanding how records are written, performed, recorded, and produced. I don't like much punk, but it influenced an enormous variety of bands who were later embraced - Cure, U2, Smiths, Joy Division.\
lol no offense but i bet this chick is fat. her novel is based upon that fat is beautiful whicth leads you to think that she had the thought of fatness on her mind. ergo SHES FAT.
This video describes the gearworks of the machinery responsible for pumping out all the formulaic stories we have become overexposed to in books, television, and movies. A + B + C = the perfect story? Seek advice on the writing craft, but be skeptical of any "silver bullet" claims to easy step-by-step success, even from established writers. Only use this process if you're more interested in getting SOLD than in expressing yourself.
"The foot bones's conneceted to the..anckle bone." lol...from my perspective..this video is fantastic and very useful!:D though i do agree with RachelKiss123 because everyone has their own way to write their story, noble, fable, etc i still think this tips and everything are utterly neccessary ..well thankyou so much for posting this vid! :D
I thought it was a nice video. I myself am working on puplishing one of my novels at the moment, and it's definetly a pain. But in my opinion you can't TELL someone how to write a novel, they must find out how for themselves. For everyone has a story inside them, just few know how to tell it
Qynox: I have to disagree with you in what you say here. The term 'painting by numbers' as used here is based on her *skill*; you cannot take away her *skill* in what she does. She uses the phrase to explain, in a simple, way how it works for her.
Consider all the information that follows and there is her 'painting by number'; it's her way of showing how it can be done *when* you know what you are doing.
I feel you have taken her literally based on what is a metaphor.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You're all very sad. There is no reason you should listen to this morbidly obese chick who fantasises about a guy who has a fetish of that kind of thang.
Also, no body wants to hear about your novel. Stick it up all of your arses.
I use a little writing program called "Write It Now" which has the most useful, organized features of any software program for writers. I'm not associated with the company, but it's been so helpful for me that I'm passing it on. With so many writers who use laptops, why carry around index cards if you're going to create your final product on the computer anyway?
Good tips in this video. I'm surprised she left out how important "voice" is. Maybe in another lesson ...?
I have a website with stories in progress that I am currently writing. One short story I have finished, I am wanting to get published but no idea how. Other stories I get stuck on with nowhere to go with them, but thanks to this, I know where I'm going. ^^
i have preveusly tryed to wrght a story but faild do to the fact i dont add a sufishing amount of detals this hase helped me figer out how to get them!!
Despite the fact of whether or not this is the old complex way of learning how to write, even the slightest word or concept can be if used to enhance one's ability in some way, has given what was needed for that particular person.
If you would like to enter a unique short story competition and be in with the chance of winning a cash prize, click on this account and watch the vid for more details. Thank you and good luck.
As a new writer in the complex world of writing any simple inspiration is another lump of gold in my buckled bag. I thank Andrea for her effort and compassion in creating a video that can offer a pressure relieving antedote to our new jumbled minds.
well I got alot out of this one video...and go figure SHE DIDNT TRY TO SELL ME ANYTHING, and she pointed me to a free website where I can get MORE useful information....and like a snowflake no 2 books are the same, of course we have to have the time to do the work , Im sure she said that somewhere...
Park your butt on a chair in front of your PC and WRITE! When not writing READ... everything you can get your hands on. This person makes it seem so easy! It's not. Everything must be in the proper proportions; in the right places. It takes skill, patience and application. No way is it this easy. I can gather 'How-to-write' books to distill all this material. No need to be able to write to prepare script for this kind of video. Just need to be able to 'crib'.
What's so hard about writing? Some make it sound harder than it is. Also, publishing and writing are two different things. Publishing and selling are also two differnt things. It took me 3 weeks to sell my first short stories, and that was after spending about 60 hours in those 3 weeks of writing, and completing about ten short stories. You have to do the work, but the preliminaries are much harder than the writing...and marketing is tedious.
I can write a porn novel. It's actually quite simple. I just replace the "obscene" words with vegetables. Example: "Eat my cucumber", I ordered. She replied: "What?" - "I said: eat my cucumber, you grocery vendor's intern!" - She did it. She kneeled down in front of me, her hands gripped my cucumber, and her mouth opened wide: "It's so...BIG!" - "Yes, it's big", I said, "but you will shove it in your mouth and you will swallow all of the green liquid." -
When I first read the comment my first reaction after responding was "I'm going to show this person wrong." I feed off of dissapointment. It's more like fuel for success to me. And I WILL try, I WILL write a story, maybe not a novel but I will write! I never read an entire novel before but I am good with creative writting.
Way to discourage people. I agree you do need talent and all that. However, you don't know if you have the talent until you try. This lady does make it seem like a walk in the part though.
it's time for the independent authors to rise from the bottom of the pile and take our place at the top where we belong!!!!!!! visit my channel....we need to change the game...sick of these agents and publishing houses? i know i am.
Still, thumb-up for the good tips for greenhorns.

Sorry to say, but the "painting by numbers" thing at the end ruined the video. This makes novel writing seem like a completely step by step thing that has a very specific structure, which is not at all what it is.

you loose weight because its healthy. there is nothing healthy about being fat. there is nothing good about being unhealthy. therefore there is nothing good about being fat. relative perspective or not. her novel theme is an evil lie.
gracer99 1 year ago
@gracer99 Lots of places where fat is beautiful though, certain African tribes etc.
riichards 1 year ago
@riichards no, because the fat people happen to be tribal and african does not make it anymore beautiful. i think i made my point that the morality of fatness is not subjective.
gracer99 1 year ago
@gracer99 at least you know it's a "lie" from the beginning, since it is called "fiction". You should direct your anger at those who lie to you and convince you it's the truth... I don't have to mention any names or organizations who specialize in doing that.. in this day and age people should be able to figure that out on their own...

I'm not much of a story writer but do enjoy to read. I had an idea to write a story but couldn't finish it, so I started a webstie called STORYJOIN It allows you to create stories with other members. You start a story and others finish it for you, it's fun to see how the story ends.
storyjoin 1 year ago
I made an account on your site--PutItOnPaper. You need to consider integrating more to the story editors options. For example, the amount of characters per paragraph is too limited. Consider easing the limit significantly. The last thing you want to do is restrict peoples options and force them to curtail their work. Next, consider adding a note adding feature. As people contribute to the story, they need to be able to easily communicate with future contributors. A side note would be convenient.
XX1goodhalo2playaXX 1 year ago
And finally, weigh your own grammatical abilities. It seems to me that you get comma happy when you write and it puts too many unnecessary pauses in the script. Other than the aforementioned, not a bad idea for a website. It's almost like a wikipedia for novelists.
XX1goodhalo2playaXX 1 year ago
Not how i'd do it really but ok... the scene card idea isn't my cup of tea especially as characters move from place to place, if you shuffle this all about then you get lost.
Bios I like though. A lot. A synopsis is done at the end though, it's a summery, not a skeleton. But writing a rough skeleton is a good idea, just a wording issue for me.
Writing without any idea of what's coming next is a very bad idea. Mixed feelings about this 'tutorial' to be honest.

heres 2 more ideas that may help, they wont hurt so no harm in hogging comments, Brian Eno when working on a U2 album said when they had laid 12 songs down, he then took the weakest/worst track and worked on it till it was the best, and on and on strengthening the album, you could apply that process to chapters, also if cant get started and this also helps get your intent across clearer is to make comments and replies on utube, it does improve the waffling, clarity, removal of the unneccasary.

i came to this vid as i saw something that wound me up on the internet and was looking for a place where the like minded would rub me shoulders and comment i agree, that site is a load of cac, but this is not the place so i wont tell, i wont, i really wont. another writers block idea, i wonder if you take a famous blockbuster and you just rewrote it sentence by sentence using ur words, of course dif pronouns, i wonder if it would sell, coz if its just about makin money, y not do that?
bryngOneOn 2 years ago
fuck systems, systems are just a way to salve the ire of writers block, makes you feel your being constructive, getting somewhere. if ur stuck.. write a novel by not writing a novel, by that i mean exercises and experiments, like write 3 different paragraphs about just say a person taking off their coat, 1 version straight descript, another making it feel like peeling a banana, 1 where its a metaphor 4 exposing soul. no rules just experiment and you may chance upon urself in your words.
bryngOneOn 2 years ago

The main problem with writing a novel is that it takes time. Your mood and insights might change in the course of time.
MomoTheBellyDancer 2 years ago 4
This is very good. Every process needs guideposts, and novel writing is no different. If you just wander around writing a lot of words, it might be entertaining for a while, but if you don't take the reader somewhere, you won't hold their interest.

Dividing a big task into smaller ones is always a good idea, of course, but I wouldn't call it "dumbing down". Writing a novel can be easy or it can be the most excruciating thing ever. It all depends on your talent, your background, the complexity of the story and your goals.

"You should not try to reduce fiction to this sort of intellectual game because that's npt what it is."
-Stephen King
MrGameposter 2 years ago 43
I agree. There are too many "paint by number" books out there already. And whats all this: "A good novel makes characters lives miserable before everything turns out in the end . . ." It sounds like the sort of cookie cutter writing that puts people to sleep. I like books that challenge me and make me feel something.
calebp9503 2 years ago
Well, you wouldn't want them to be happy, and stay happy. That's boring. For example, the book is about a family roadtrip around the country. Would you rather read about their excellent sights and rather lenient traffic, or about the struggles that they would encounter: broken down vehicle, not enough money, maybe a homicidal hitchhiker. It's all about conflict->resolution.
zeroknight55 2 years ago
To some writing is an intellectual game. As long as it leads to something worth reading, it's all okay.

It's cheap to conceive but costs in the long run.

thank you i have a great novel on my mind now!!!!!!
killersnake8000 2 years ago
THis is why writing "tips" like these don't work. Writing is not a set of rules.
viewtiful12345 2 years ago
It could be said that writing is an expression of mind, and therefore a rule-oriented approach would appeal to a rule-oriented mind.
Besides which, writing is built on language and language is rule-based. Writing is not solely a set of rules but neither is it complete chaos. Moderation in all things, etc.
genericmeatunit 2 years ago
You have to find your own "rules", not folow someone else's. That's why a lot of people try to write folowing these guidelines and can't get anything done, it just might not work for them. If you are begining to write you need to WRITE, not think about a plot scructure or anything else. You can folow EVERY one of these steps and still write something HORRIBLE: The "x factor" is work, not rules.
viewtiful12345 2 years ago
Indeed, but a starting writer is much like a child. The rules are an unknown. We begin by copying other people's rules, then pick and choose the bits that we like to make up our own rules.
So, in summary, I wouldn't recommend following JUST these rules in isolation, but listen to this any anything else you can find, assimilate as much data as you can and let your subconcious sort it out.
genericmeatunit 2 years ago
I agree with you, gen.
Screw elitism.

I find it stunning that someone dares to compare writing to "paint by numbers"
Writing is about expressing feelings by playing with words and knowledge
This tutorial might be handy for the shortstory for school but nothing more
Qynox 3 years ago 3
Qynox: I have to disagree with you in what you say here. The term 'painting by numbers' as used here is based on her *skill*; you cannot take away her *skill* in what she does. She uses the phrase to explain, in a simple, way how it works for her.
Consider all the information that follows and there is her 'painting by number'; it's her way of showing how it can be done *when* you know what you are doing.
I feel you have taken her literally based on what is a metaphor.

I just started writing a couple of weeks ago.
I had to learn the alphabet at first, but since then it's been plain sailing.
The letters come whizzing out and form words and before you know it you'll have finished your very first paragraph.
Mind you, I still have some of the alphabet left to learn. That's why there's no words in this comment with the letter z in it.
But as soon as I hit Z, watch out. I'll be knocking a novel a day out.
