@aslelsa Not really. No one goes to prison for having a mental illness. In fact, many criminals are in hospitals for committing violent crimes, because they were judged unfit to assist an attorney in their own defence. Plus, a hospital is an environment that needs to be kept to a certain standard of cleanliness, which can't be maintained with animals running around.
Prisons are useless because punishment actually makes people act even worse. God forbid that prisoners, who actually get worse during prison, get released back into the society to cause even more harm. Might as well kill the prisoners if you're not trying to make them into socially functioning human beings. That would save a lot of our tax money.
Rehabilitation on the other hand fixes the prisoners and helps them integrate back into the society.
@x111240 There have been a number of rehabilitation methods attempted, some more effective & useful than others. The whole point of prisons was, originally, to house the victim while they awaited the criminal's trial, a guilty verdict meant banishment from the township. The next step was to control what prisoners thing - control how/what they think & you comtrol their behavior. This has held true,. What no one had considered was that, eventually, the prisoners would be controling each other
I think it´s an amazing idea!!! I just hope they check which prisoners get to look after the animals because if it´s a very violent man he might hurt one of the animals.
@IstalkBananas Yes, it is, until you consider the triangle of psychopathy - bed-wetting, fire-startnig & ccrueltty to animals. This doesn't mean that prisoners shouldn't be allowe dot use animals in their rehabilitation, only thatthere shuold be an effective vetting of each prisoner receiving an animal. I think it's a great idea, on the whole Animals are non-judgemental & prisonerrs can foster parent animals & train guide dogs for the blind & working class animals Giving back to society.
@WESTLOS I think he's in another country. The show this depicts international current events. Youtube is international, as well. We do, however, have these program in a few enlightened prisons in the U.S. INitial results have been very good, however, but intervention & rehabilitation are expensive. I fear the animal programs will be first to go, as being un-necessary when compaired to food, upkeep, renovation & other essentials.
I've seen a similar thing in the UK where a low security prison is attached to a farm and the inmates look after the farm animals.
I'm sure the animals are at no more risk than they would be with any other people. If these sorts of things reduce reoffending then it's a very good idea, afterall isn't that a big part of what prison is about?
@ChrisCooper312 Well, it -is- a good idea, but no, that's not what Prison is about, Prison is about punishment, not rehabilitation, regardless of what you're told. If it were about rehabilitation there would be -many- more programs like this in Prisons across the world.
@Hakudohshi Prisons have become the warehouses of revenge. Rehabilitation costs more than simple incarceration. Your avarage breeder animals are legistlated to receive more "intellectual enrichment" than your average prisoner. It's unfortunate, really, because if we can reach the young, this way, perhaps they can be diverted from this kind of warehousing in the future.
Only in a minimum security prison or jail would I allow this. In a super max, I would spray the prisoners down with pig blood and release 10,000 starving rats.
The only pets prisoners should get are lions, tigers, and bears and maybe an untamed gorilla. I wanna see their happy faces on video when they get their new untamed pets for free!!!
It's definitely a win win situation. The animals love it and the prisoners learn compassion and they have something to look after, care for, and give them company.
NO, prison is supposed to be punishment. Prisoners should not have nice fun things like pets, TV, weightlifting or whatever. They should just sit there in their cages with no entertainment, and the ones that are proven serial murderers should be put to death and stop wasting taxpayer dollars.
Teach the bird to pick pocket the guards keys...Have ferret do the twisting of the key in the lock. Get the dog to maul the guards...Throw the bunny at the guard in the sniper tower after teaching it to be like the one in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Now you're free.
This reminds me so much of the 'Green Mile' film! Anyone who's seen that film will know what I'm talking about, I think it's a great idea to introduce pets for those in minimum security prisons, I can see it really helping some.
I too also had anger management issues but since I captured a good looking dude to keep in the cellar I have become much more relaxed, can take a joke and smile more. Every woman should have one
how about we keep the animals away from people who have a history of killing small things when they were younger eh? Yes this can be good for some people but think of the risk and danger these animals are in if some of these prisoners mean to harm them. I don't mean to assume the worst but some of these people are in prison for a reason
@YodaTheWise1 Yes, they are in prison for a reason, and that reason could have absolutely nothing to do with killing or harming anything. Besides, I'm sure they're never left alone with the animals to have a chance to hurt them even if they wanted to. I think this is an excellent idea, every human being could learn and develop a great deal from spending time with animals and I think everyone should.
Yes, I agree with everyone who support pets in prison. It's a no brainer that people can learn more responsibility when it comes to taking care of a fluffy, furry, smooth, or feathered companion. I really think this program should be endorsed widely!
i have anger management issues myself, keeping pets has helped me keep cool. this method is also very helpful if they get the animals from rescue/homes. beneficial to both parties.
I think it's actually a good idea. Pets may teach prisoners how to love some again and how to be responsible for another being. May actually be a good rehab. Just guessing :)
There's a prison in the US that does this where the shelter lets the inmates take care of the foster cats but I'm not sure whether they are allowed to take the animals with them when they leave. It's very effective though!
Yay french people :D I wonder if they get to pick what animal they get? It's a good idea and great for giving them something to live for, do, and take responsibility for!
@Anet000 Poor you for not showing compasion and only thinking about the animals. By the way they seem to take great care for them. After they get out, they will be nicer to other people. You are one crazy peta woman.
@Snauzer67 either you are murderer or you are absolutely....isnt it enough they get warm room, daily food, everything from your taxation, isnt it enough they have destroyed life of many families, i bet you have never had your parents/gf/bf/wife/husband/child murdered or raped? where is justice? nowhere, why should i support even more comfort for this rubbish of society?
@Anet000 well..Anet some of them do serve time and get out. If having a pet can help them mentally I think it is good. Many of them have had a disturbed chilhood. Some of "us well - adaped" people might have done the same things they did if we had had the same conditions. And sry for calling you a peta crazed person.
@Snauzer67 and you say i am poor for not showing any compasion? come on, this was really awkward, ask for more compasion for killer ppl whos child was murdered, just try it...animals are just another mean of support this just system which u have no idea about. This just makes everybody not to fear of killing..bcs actually they know that prison isnt that cruel

You guys do realize these programs are used in minimum-sercurity prisons, right?
As in, these are not murders & rapists in this video?
As in they didn't kill small animals when they were little & they do have a sense of morality & compassion?
(They're most likely locked away due to drugs or first-degree assult---forgiveable crimes.)
