  • What a fail! I could do that in my range rover classic 300tdi with some chunky all terrain tyres and a bit of a lift... A defender can do much much more! Land Rover best thing on the planet for off roading.

  • the engine on the 1990-present Land Rover Defender

    Engine

    2.5 L 107 hp (80 kW) I4 turbo diesel (1990-1994)

    2.5 L 111 hp (83 kW) I4 turbo diesel (1994-1998)

    3.9L 182 hp (136 kW) V8 petrol

    2.5 L 122 hp (91 kW) I5 turbo diesel

    2.4 L 122 hp (91 kW) I4 turbo diesel

  • great car, but his last lines kinda bummed me. lol

  • a Discovery could do that, please, a defender can do more!

  • he's whining like a girl, ooh, ooh ohh my word :D

  • That was the most epic Land Rover commercial ever, and Land Rover didn't even have to make it.

  • I really wish they'd just put some airbags in the thing so I can get one here in the US. How hard could it be?

  • @DannyBoy20802 Is that why they are not avail in US? Is it possible to export an older diesel version from UK. Are there any EPA/customs hassles to import a Defender to the US? Thanks

  • @radbcc A law from 1998 says that all new cars must have airbags for both front seat passengers, so Land Rover stopped selling them after 1997. I'm not sure if one could be imported, but it would definitely have to be a model from before 1998. I'm not sure if they'd meet emissions either.

  • Some great shots of this truck in this video. Great coverage.

  • 4 people have a hummer!

  • I don't understand how that Defender is so slow.. It's got the engine from a Transit, which is the fastest vehicle in the world, no matter how fast you go there will always be a Transit sat 2 inches of your backend.

  • @petbedding01 Is that sarcasm? A Ford Transit is a tall awkward work van that doesn't go very fast. Either way, the gearing is totally designed for low end torque, not high end speed.

  • i had one i love it

  • Defender, Wrangler, and Bronco. 3 SUVs that were made for men and no roads.

  • You could only do that in a land rover or a land cruiser no jeep can go off road because they just run out of fuel

  • Landcruiser! Land rover has always provided a better driving dynamic than tojos , always will!!!!

You Tojo lovers do like to play it safe and secure, but thats fine, we now know who the pretenders are as you drive on by in your Girly Tojo "landcruiser"

  • It's no toyota landcruiser!

  • nice defender but i do prefer my series IIA V8 lightweight

  • Makes me proud to own a landy ! :)

  • Only nissan patrols, land rover defenders and toyota land cruisers are considered to be good expedition veichles (not off roaders/rock crawlers 100m from highway, with other veichles to call for help).when you are alone in the middle of noevhere, you arent gonna put your life in Wrangler rubicon. that needs a skilled machanic/computer engineer to fix. and it has terrible radious, which needs to be at least 1500km with some additional jerrycans. P.S. good gasoline is hard to find. diesel is diesel

  • jeep drivers dont understand defenders philosophy. rubicon can beat land rover in rock crawling or some deep mud with bigger tyres and more power. but when it breakes?(and all cars do) defender will live along coacroaches cause it can be fixed in the middle of desert with a hammer and a duct tape. And its a diesel-in harsh conditions consumes about 20l/100km and jeep about 50l/100km. that is serious off road. ppl dont drive jeeps in namibia where i have been many times

  • I drive a 300tdi defender from 1995. ex military. bought it equivalent of 3000$ after 14 yrs of service. i use it as a daily drive. great for hunting and offroad, but also in city. I just rode over any obstacles (like anti-parking poles) and its happy with red diesel, so it consumes same ammount of $ as golf. and as of family, with 3000l of cargo bay and a roof rack that takes 2 euro pallets...

  • It's funny that a British driver with a British car tells that the British car is the best with now any 4x4 competitor let's say the wrangler rubicon lower gears what engine you have defender WHAT A 2.4 liter engine WHAT WITH 120 HP defender use to be the best nor any more the rubicon can win it I love defenders and wranglers bat im board of hearing BULLSHIT defender use to be the best bat vs the rubicon not any more

  • DEFENDER ARE HADING BEHIND THERE NAMES THE NEW WRANER RUBICON TOOK THE 1PLACE by the old grandpa wen the rubicon edition came to market sadly the defenders that are less strong and powerful and the wrangler gears are lower just why to nor accept it DEFENDER is just a name that use to shadow wrangler bat nor until wrangler brought rubicon I'm waiting of your swearing land rover fans because that's the only thing you know better from wrangler AND WRANGLER COMES WITH BIGGER TIRES I'm shore of that

  • i really like defender but i think its not really doing any progress i mean u dont have to change design but at least change the engine! i mean come one 2011 defender with only 2.4L 120 HP???

  • My wife swapped her Mini Cooper (2004 model) for a Defender 5 years ago.....she's absolutely loves it and has never looked back. I love driving it too (when I can prise the keys off her)

Sure it's not fast, it's bouncy, and unrefined. But so much fun to drive! I also have a lotus Elise, Porsche and a Ferrari Mondial t but often I will still take the Defender given the choice.

  • I found out how to get Defenders (including diesel models that get x2 the fuel economy) available in America!!! Step 1: Register to vote. Step 2: Vote for Ron Paul who would then deregulate the market, thereby getting rid of regulation requirements on airbags. Step 3: Once he deregulated the markets, go on down to your local Land Rover dealership and say, "I'd like to buy a Defender please."

  • Land Rover + good Driver = Robocop!! (off road)

  • jeep wrangler jk rubicon... probably better for the price

i live in the states so prices are different than you folks across the pond

  • @roadman89NE And the defender isnt sold out here :( but i'd love to see a fifth gear comparo. between the 2

  • jeep wrangler jk rubicon... probably better for the price

  • don't know why but this is one of my fav reviews of all time

  • I love defenders :)

  • Landies are my dream- cars since I was 7, and saw "Born Free" for the first time, where arrives series II. Now I think about def 90 :) BTW- Somebody knows sth about music in 3:16 minute? I like it.

  • Want. This. Car.

  • This car is much much much better than hummers

  • 2 people don't like off-roading

  • @FaisalAMuttaqin make it 4 people :P

  • those fenders are bad ass!

  • Remember its the best 4x4 by far!! Landcruiser never can beat a land rover .

  • @nathaniel1712 i hav done this with my landcruiser 70series v6 i have beaten a defender many times, i was mad about defenders when i was kid & even now i love defenders but the fact is landcruiser is the best, after landcruiser i will choose a landrover,

  • where there are no roads you dont want to drive anything else and thats exactly what a defender is about

  • @a6km landcruisers make their own ways in any where,,

  • defenders are good but not good as landcruiser 70 series,

  • @SuperRover2010 thats a joke right ?

  • @a6km i dont think so buddy,

  • plus for an 07 plate one you need a lottery win.. mine is fully loaded with all mods 51 plate and its £10k

  • I'm getting one . Sold ! 2011 version !

  • Or he could have taken a factory Landcruiser 80/100/200 series and it would have got there and you'd be much more comfortable and not look like a dick, actually forget that Tom Ford looks like a dick all the time.

  • @OCquattro u hav forgot the landcruiser 70 series the best 4X4,

  • 1 thing wrong with this video.......land rover defenders aren't that tough, they break down real easy, but still an amazing 4x4.

  • 2.27

thumbsup if u know what latvia is :D

  • the first cool fifth gear video

  • And thats why i've got one!

  • I love the Defender but for city use... auch! A lot of fuel is burned :(

  • with those artic tires:

    0-60 would take longer

    topspeed would be lower

    mpg would be higher

    :D

  • Defender is the best Land Rover and offroad vehicle (ORV).

  • its a piece of shit car trust me, finnish army has these cars and ive driven them, really a piece of shit. its only good in really bad terrain but its not comfortable there either

  • It's a awesome car it's not stock but still it only makes it more awesome

Offroad though in Australia we call that a highway

  • @AussieTigers ha ha ha so true mate! so bloody true!

  • I love this defender :X

  • and the camera crew followed in a Toyota....

  • @SPINPOSI it couldnt have been followed by a toyota, it wouldnt have made it up there.

  • @JoshHurdissHall it could have been modified like the defender. but yes it would struggle

  • Anyone have ANY idea where the music that starts at 3:19 and runs to 3:33 is from?

  • what year is that suv?

  • @luis61961944 2007

  • @luis61961944 The defender is not an SUV.

Incidentally, the model has been available more or less the same since 1985. Mild facelifts and upgrades obviously. This 2007 model is fairly nice inside for a land rover, but if you're looking for a barge with wide seats then buy something made in america. :P

  • How come they don't sell this car in USA? I would like to get one, one day, if they do.

  • @Mearyeaurng

    homologation

  • @Mearyeaurng. They do... tool.

  • @Mearyeaurng it didnt pass saftey regulations without making it too expensive

  • @friendlyuser1. For a man who is that much into off-roading you sure don't know much about Land Rovers. They are manufactured in Solihull near Birmingham in ENGLAND! Just like they always have been. And if you do not think they impress, it is because you never been futher out than a rather smooth gravelroad. But i guess that what you yanks do. You think you are off-roading when you leave the interstate highway.

  • Does any one know what the music that starts at the 3:18 minute marks is from?

  • Can't beat a Defender, I'm 18 and it's my first car.. Well I bought a Saxo, but never bothered getting insured because I caught the Landy Bug, can't beat a 200 or 300tdi though, keep it simple better then the TD5 as less things to break!

  • @toddyboy563 So true ;)

  • @toddyboy563 how much is your insurance at 18? looking at getting one myself but i am worried the insurance will be murder

  • @jameswmoseley94 its absolutely ridiculous to insure im 17 and i had a look on a comparison website and it would cost me over five grand, but i work at a landrover garge so i get to drive a few any ways.

  • @jameswmoseley94 what a shame i love the defender its a brilliant car

  • @jameswmoseley94 it costs me 2k to insure my Landy pal. First car too, 0 no claims too, you just got to shop about to get a good price. 2k is alot but that's the price everyone new driver is paying these days. they wanted £2300 for my saxo and after that quote I got rid and got my Landy. Well worth it!

  • The old hiluxes would survive too. Just look at the top gear "review".... it worked after all the things.

  • @AMVDawg Oh yes, out of all the 4x4s, Toyotas and Land Rovers are the cream of the crop, I would buy a Landy though out of personal preference.

  • oh and this video takes 2 long for loading

  • best off-roader ever!

  • what make of tyres are they anybody

  • how more epic can you get. and it's not as bad as they make out it's no less comfortable than the average car like a corsa ect. and the radio ect is such a quick job to change yourself if you wanted usb/better mp3 or ipod even or in mycase i got a dvd system in mine!

  • anyone know what make of tyres that badboys on

  • @nem0790 BF Goodrich with 1000s Sidewalls

  • I have one. 94 with all the extras. Missouri

  • BURN FIFTH GEAR

  • Also this makes me want to go to Iceland ! ! !

  • im in scotland and have a 1994 defender 90 which i go off-roading in i was just saying that if i win the lottery i would buy a icelandic spec one like this...............

  • what kind of lights are the blue ones on the roof rack? they look awesome

  • this is the first thing i,m buying when i win the lottey.. superb ,,,,,,,,,

  • you dont need a lottery to buy one...mine was 9000 quid...the bloke i got it from completely overhauled his 1993 model...if i were cocky i'd call it custom

all you need to get one is the balls to go for a defender and not a golf

  • @MilitantOldLady

Ahhh Well said indeed. I am however jelous that you can BUY a 1993 for that. Here in the states I paid a SHOCKING amount for my 1993...

  • @LostSon101

well it is a native animal here, i imagine you got import costs added to the price

  • @LostSon101

jaelous !? u r kidding !? for this piece of junk ? americans will pay anything to be 'cool' but as an automobile this is nothing. I've been offroading in different parts of the world, the middle east, africa, asia, i;ve never seen these impress anywhere in the world. Do you know they assemble these in pakistan now and even the afghans refuse to buy them ! this is considered rubbish everywhere else in the world except maybe the UK.

  • @MilitantOldLady I wan't one, I'd most likely get one that was a few years old, a 110 with a luggage rack, roof lights and a snorkel.

Brilliant design, best 4x4 by far.

  • @G1NZOU

they're not hard to find and they are cheap aswell...just poke arround in used car sections in newspapers or magazines

  • @MilitantOldLady Will do, only thing I really need to remember is to check underneath to see the condition of the ladder frame, dents in the bodywork are fine (it's the only vehicle that still looks good dented.) but I don't want any rust underneath.

Last week I was in Snodonia on holiday and saw loads of these, gave me something to admire on the road.

  • @G1NZOU

stay away from cars that were regularily offroad, seems odd i know...go for ones owned by farmers or by private companies...i've seen loads of them used by maintanance companies, those tend to be in quite good nick and cheap

  • @MilitantOldLady Sound advice, I definately don't want an ex-RNLI one, too much salt water.

  • @MilitantOldLady to true mine was seven and it will out live me!!

  • @MilitantOldLady I take it you're in Britain. Defenders are much more expensive State-side. The thing is only a few thousand were ever made to US-spec, and they were all 3.9l V8s. I recently saw a '94 110 wagon at a dealer, they were asking $38,500 for it. That's £24,000, you can buy a brand new one over there for that.

  • @kingsmountainview its a shame you cant buy it cheaper over there.

  • @MilitantOldLady did you get your defender in usa or in uk?

  • @MilitantOldLady More than balls you'll have to have money to buy a defender instead of a Golf. How much a defender consums comparing to a Golf? Your family will be confortable in a Defender?

  • @00eldiablo00

it has a 2L diesel engine, so it consumes just a tiny bit more than a family car because it has to fight its own mass and aerodynamics, but the monthly fuel bills are not much more than your run of the mill family car...im not keeping track of the mpg, but the fuel bill is no more than 40£ a month...depending on the configuration, you can comfortably seat up to 6 people i find, if you put benches in the back

  • @MilitantOldLady 40£ is a lot for a person who live in Portugal, like me. About the fuel consumption, the difference is not only a "tiny bit more than a family car". It is the double. My Seat Ibiza 1.6 TDI consumes 4l/100km and your Defender consumes more than 8l. Anyway, I probably would preferer having a defender instead of a Ibiza.

  • @00eldiablo00

to me it isnt really bad...i've had cars that would not go below 10L *caughAlfacaugh* ....but you have to look at the average income from country to country...40£ just isnt that bad here....if you really want to save money, just have an LPG (liquid petrolium gas) kit fitted...that will just about half the bills

  • @MilitantOldLady wish that was the case here in U.S. the Defenders are hard to find here and if you do find one their ether 30-50 thousand dollars!!!

  • @LROVERBOY aww that sucks man

  • Are you here in the US? If so the 1983, 1984 and very soon 1985 year models are LEGALLY importable. US DOT has a rolling 25 year cut off and anything older than that is importable. I have an 83 that was a functional restoration in England before it came over. Bottom Line the Defender is now much more affordable.

  • you can import into america any model before 1997, the reason is because of emissions standards.

  • I was told 25 years for DOT and 21 years for EPA for the Untied States. i believe Canada is only 15 years.

    I WISH I could bring in a 97 110 ! ! !

  • is that for complete exemption form tests?

because they were sold new in the US up until 1997.

  • there is 2 models you can import into the US:

    1993 land rover defender 110

    1997 land rover defender 90

they are on some sort of exemption list?

  • On bringing those in they have to be federalized up to North America Spec hence the name NAS 110 or NAS 90. From what I understand the process is HUGELY expensive. Where as finding an older rover and even restoring it is cheaper. Also as far as I am aware (and I could be totally wrong here) I don't think any one has done it.

  • Don't get me wrong I LOVE the Defender and I am ALL about more coming in to the country but I would go about it legally, not bringing in something and newer and then doing a VIN swap with an older Series Rover.

  • they were sold new in the US by land rover but with a V8 in them, unfortunately they are still very expensive second hand. around $35,000 with 75,000 miles on them for a 1997 model.

  • Yeah that is the Shame of this situation. In England they aren't worth very much at all for the same vehicle. They are essentially a Utility vehicle...

  • @LostSon101 there not cheap at all unless its an old one

  • @aventguard

yea could be...mine is ex-police...still has a CB radio in it :D

  • The best 4x4xfarx60yrs!! I LOVE MY LAND ROVER!!
