  • I think you played your version well but some of the runs are crushed together. I am sure you are much better than this now!

  • As a trumpet player... I have to admit... Wow. This is a dream come true. You go boy!!

  • I've watched this video countless times... I am in 10th grade and I've been playing for 6 years... this is simply amazing. This is my dream song. I hope to play it with my symphony or band group someday. Awesome job!

  • nice playing.

If you don't mind me feedback, I feel you were a little too keen with the speed at times.

I would like to hear you do it seeming more relaxed with the speed in the first 90 seconds, so I could enjoy every note in teh sumptuous introduction a little more. The later tempo is perfectly appropriate and pleasurable to listen to.

  • VERY GOOD. comee to Miami and tutor me... i may be intermediate or higher. but still want help u are awesome !! im surprised your mouth didnt weaken out

  • asian father--"now play it backwards!!!"

  • As an avid clarinet player I cannot even begin to describe how much I love this performance. I am hoping that I will be able to solo this at my senior concert!

  • @dantehman224 Woohoo! I'd love to see your interpretation if you do :)

P.S. Score links in the description. Good Luck.

  • Nice Job keep it up. Some people will hate no matter what you do. You know you did a Great Job. Excellent!

  • It is very worked, plus it has good sound and technique, the problem is chopped and especially in the treble, is to improve, and much, still striving and see how you get it. Congratulations!

  • Man, that was incredible! I can play the piano parts for this. I wish I could've met up with you; my high school's band isn't that good. ;)

  • name of the music ?

  • @matutee321 ups its in the tittle :P

  • Bravo Bravo

  • dude who's that clarinet chick in the front on the far right she is so hot and the blonde girl in the second row wow I didn't know any hot girls played the clarinet. oh good job by the way.

  • does anyone have the sheet music for the clarinet solo?

  • @123arianagrandefan sorry, i just read the description and now i feel stupid

  • my first band preformance was as long as this video....

  • BRAVO ! ! ! !

  • 33 people had a clarinet stuck up their ass

  • Et en plus il prend la partie de trompette...

  • Trop vite!! Et mal joué, aucune profondeur de gorge!

  • Okay... So this is what I'm looking like in 15 years o-o

  • this guy is pompous but still give him props

  • You are fantastic keep up the great work! How long did it take you to learn this?

  • @jasmine2015baby Well, two years before this performance, I wrote a biography on George Gershwin. One year before, I had the solo music in my hands and began practicing. Five months prior, I began to seriously work on the piece, upon which I began to learn how to glissando. Two months in advance, I auditioned for the solo, having inadvertently memorized it. And for one month, I rehearsed with my wonderful ensemble.

  • Fun to watch. Love the little bounce you have going. Shows you are really into the musical peice you are doing. And yes Clarinetest like to show off, as do drummers, trombonist , trumpeters, and any other musician who has the self confidence that they know they are good. Great job young man.

  • You should visit "Blues Clarinet Psicodelic"

  • damn he's good

  • I love this piece and its my absolute dream to play it at my last concert with my school band!!! I really look up to players like this :) I better get dropping hints to my conductor and clarinet teacher!!!

  • Which high note? At the end of the first bend its c 2 ledger lines above the staff. The highest note in the intro is the f above that.

  • I look up to players like this! I always wanted to know how to play this!

  • whats that high note? :3

  • Do you have a recording of this?

  • Spectacular! I love the emotion you put into it! I've been playing clarinet for 3 years and I would love to sound like this!

  • certainly the best version i heard

  • Blazin Asians! We rule

  • i play the clarinet and i hope to do that some day

  • i Love Clarinet

  • i having clarinet

  • My daughter (10 years old) just started playing clarinet for school. You are an inspiration! What a beautiful rendition of this song. Very handsome musician!!

  • ' Wow How Could He Memorize all Those Notes ! Wow I Liked This . : )

  • the notes to that peice don't look very hard... but the emotion you used is absolutely STUPENDOUS. good job! what grade were you in when you performed this?

  • i wish my little school had a band like this :\ can't wait till college! great playing btw

  • Wow you are just incredible, and this song is really cool :). I'd love to have this solo. Amazing job! :D

  • Where is that kid (the soloist) now? Juilliard??!

  • Holy fuck that was awesome!

  • My annoying friend keeps playing this glissando, and it is getting on my nerves. But a very beautiful song.

  • @Ster29051 I couldn't agree with you more. Clarinets like to show off XD

  • @macgyversfriend

I play clarinet, and I found this comment in no way offensive.

    Only because it's true! :D

  • @macgyversfriend Is there something wrong with that?? So what if we like to show off you can't hear us worth crap half the time!! :)

  • @macgyversfriend oh no, he learned how to gliss up and down, so he sounds like a slide whistle.......

  • @Ster29051 Jokes on you! Portamento.

  • LOVE IT!

  • amazing!!

  • this is great! really enjoyed it =)

  • i play clarinet and sax but wow that guy memorized all those freaking notes!

  • But I've been playing for 5 years. So yeah.

  • I bought a clarinet two days ago...its hard as FUCK.. i thought it would be easy since i play sax but no.... :(

  • @xMicroNikx Actually the clarinent gets easier as you start to learn.

  • :^(

  • Keep it goin' bro! Such a sick solo.

  • Amazing. It's truly wonderful, so skilled! What a great thing to listen to before bed.!

  • Alright everyone. Please STOP the comments about race here. My ethnicity has absolutely nothing to do with my performance. Whether good or bad, ANY stereotype of race is hurtful to a person's abilities and respect. In fact, I am sad that I even have to say something because of the way I look. The bottom line is that ANYONE can do great things if he or she puts work and passion into it. If you don't believe me, watch the thousands of my YouTube clarinet colleagues in the sidebar :)

  • @macgyversfriend just has to do with having strict parents... that happen to be common for that particular race

  • @macgyversfriend well said! your tuning is superb, I know how difficult it is to play it stylistically without forcing the sound too much! x

  • @ButterflyBriBri97 They have more discipline than us, while we are on youtube, facebook and online games - they are either studying or practicing instruments.

  • Ugh those bends. <3

  • I tried the links you posted but with no luck I would love to play this can you help me out so I can find the arrangment that was played

  • JOSH! Lol this is my school!

  • excelente perfecto i'm clarinetist

  • Who is the good-looking clarinetist to the right of the soloist? She's a hottie...

  • You, kind sir, are amazing, I applaud you!

  • This lil kid was awsome!

  • it's always the asains who are best at everything.-_-

  • @facemelter1997 How about you put some effort into something, see what you get, and stop being racist? -_-

  • i dont really know why people listen to music like this.. look at my chanel for some REal music...

  • 1:58

    "fuck yeah"

  • @mcgyversfriend Would be SO grateful if you could point me in the direction of the score for this. Would be so awesome if our wind band could play this (i'm clarinet after all ;) )

  • @willz1208 found it, just needed to expand the info bar

  • @willz1208 I've placed the link to the score in the description. Good luck.

  • @RJShaw0 alot of people so maybe you should get a life instead of just trolling youtube for once. This man did a great job on this piece and if you are to ignorant to realize this then perhaps you should not be handling a computer. Good day Sir!

  • @RJShaw0 You are just jealous because you cant play to the quality as this man. Oh but wait there are many combinations to this man here (you). I am sure you are just another director that thinks he is God's gift to the world of music and trolls youTube for the latest in musical mess ups. Little dose of reality fella, you are not the world best musician either. Another thing we are human and we make mistakes and i bet he was pretty nervous that he has to play Rhapsody in Blue in front of...

  • Cool. I want to learn that.

  • Can anyone send me the whole clarinet part if it is not any trouble?

  • Well, if this is a high school band then I guess it is a nice job !!

  • Really excellent. I am trying to convince my conductor to let me play this with my high school's wind ensemble at my senior concert next year. I'll try to upload a video if I do make this happen.

  • Woah, freaking awesome glisses man :D

  • This was the song that made my decision for me to play the clarinet it is one of my favorite pieces of music

  • I just found this randomly and thought this was excellent!!! One of my favorite compositions ever. My daughter will be playing the clarinet this coming 6th grade year... Wanted to show her what she can do!

  • @Michelle062970 Awesome! Best of luck to her! I also highly recommend marching band if it is offered in high school. It really adds another dimension of community to the musical experience!

  • @macgyversfriend Thank you :)

  • @macgyversfriend Oh my god, Marching Band is amazing. I'm a Freshman so my band class sucks. I am stuck with all the people just learning how to play. I love the sound of your Clarinet too, what do you use?

  • @FSXGuy1 I have an E11 Buffet wood clarinet. It gets the job done for proficient players at less the cost than an R13. Unless you plan to become a clarinet master of course! Also, you should make sure you get a good mouthpiece. Go to the store and try them and see which one works best for you! Go for dark, not bright, sound. A good mouthpiece, ligature, and reeds can sometimes make more of a difference in your sound than the actual clarinet!

  • @macgyversfriend

    Can I know what mouthpiece?

  • @FSXGuy1 I use an M-13 Vandoren mouthpiece. Because everyone's mouth is shaped differently, I'd still recommend going to your music store and trying different models out for yourself and really focus on dark sound. That's what you want.

  • @rellibelly1 I absolutely agree. The accompaniment is ultimately why i chose the piece!

  • Comment removed

  • What clarinet do you have?

  • Great job man! you did awesome with this peice. but people aren't giving any credit to the accompanyment. they did an amazing job as well... all in all very beautiful

  • You are Amazing my good sir....not only you played that with passion, you also played it with pride....Kudos on you too for memorizing it!!

  • You've probably been playing for a while, but doesn't your face begin to ache after a while?

  • You, sir are amazing!

I play clarinet and I can do some cool stuff but not like that 8D :D

    Amazing. :)

  • that was crazy good!

    imma clarinet too

respect bro....well imma clarinet turned contra

  • ha sido genial genial....por dios no puedo creerlo.que vergueza tengo llevo mucho años aprendiéndolo...muy bonita con pasion que tengo yo por el clarinete segiré practicándolo

  • WOW !!!! JUST WOW!!!

    WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY?

    AMAZING!!

  • absolutely amazing! I am in awe of his talent. I played clarinet for 7 years, and never got to be this good.

  • You made me fall back in love with my instrument :')

    Woww , your a beautiful player -3

  • he is really good i should know i play the clrinet i like playing i think im prettty i can paly this song but just not as good as him but i can play it good so yah

  • WOW! You sir, are the BEST player I have ever heard. I am in grade six, but I play Clarinet for the grade nines, I live for music and I was just wondering where I could get my hands on this song, I know I know I'm not this good but I need a challenge! :)

  • @LoganLevesque Well thank you very much, but there is no way that I am even close to being a professional. It's really the full ensemble accompaniment that makes this piece so great. The sheet music is not actually that difficult, but it is the style, techniques, and spirit of the piece that I spent months on. I also played an abridged version, the sheet music is 50% longer. Youtube won't let me post links, so I left the music link at the bottom of the video info. Good luck and have fun!

  • CLARINETS RULE! I just started playing so wish me luck!

  • @siennarox4 Good Luck! Once you develop your basics, remember that tone quality and expression are what will make you different from your peers. And yes, Clarinets do RULE

  • @siennarox4 I wish you luck :3 Clarinet player for 3 years clarinet all the way

  • Nice, but should have held out glissando and not cut the phrases too short

  • I also feel that the runs are rushed... As a clarinet player, I like to drag out my glisses for maximum jazziness!

  • LOVE YOUR SOUND!!!

  • At about 2:20 he has his pinky finger where the ring finger is supposed to be, can anyone tell me when that is supposed to happen because I have been playing for 5 years and haven't ever seen that or had to do it. -_-

  • @Jaggerslythe I'm pretty sure that he just is resting his finger there for support in the hand. I don't think he's actually using it. If he corrects his hand postition then it will be fine.

  • @Jaggerslythe Sorry, I don't see what you mean. At 2:21 I am playing a high Eb which requires the lower Eb key and the lower ring finger fork, which is a totally legal fingering. Maybe that's what you're seeing?

  • @macgyversfriend I think you just put your pinky on clarinet for support or something...must say, did look weird watching it at first, I had to watch it like 8 or 9 times to see what was happening lol

  • @macgyversfriend I was talking about the top hand. You put your pinky in the ring finger hole at around 2:20 I think I see what you did, but I just don't know why.

  • damn :o i wish i was that good at clarinet lol

  • really awesome... i tried that gliss... and it sooo didn't work... xDD

and it's soo cute how he#s enjoying himself...

  • that was AMAZING! i LOVED it!

  • hmm... interesting how you didnt have a piano in this. i dotn see how you can play it without such an integral part of the song. (in my opinion of course)

but anyways, you are amazing at clarinet. i liked it

  • This is nuts, Josh! Great job.

  • @MarshallVoit Wow, thanks for watching! I hope you are doing well!

  • how you get such a quality of sound it's truly a great sound.

  • it was okay

  • it was ok

  • Alice in wonderland anyone?

  • Hi, This is Lovely Playing, Also Watch Ustad Abdul salam Naushad, he is an Indian Classical Clarinet Player. He is Amazing too.

  • Nice to hear u play the United Airlines theme song. I'm an Airline Pilot and I must say you did a great job.

  • sounds pretty damn good.... and its kind of small band.....but still sounds great....and props to the dude with the clarinet solo well done!!

  • whats with everyone thinkin glissing i so hard? lol

  • when did you start playing (what age)

  • josh!!! it's amanda, your old section leader. I came across this video and I'm so proud of you for posting it and getting so many views! you sounded even better in person! congrats and good luck with everything josh!

  • @a8m5n8 Thanks so much Amanda! I never expected to get so many views, but all of the credit should really go to George Gershwin and his orchestrator Fred Grofé for creating such a universally loved work of art. I am glad that you enjoyed some of my videos and good luck to you as well!

  • youtube.com/watch?v=1U40xBSz6Dc&feature=related

  • @osh0011 these two videos are good examples. i liked these interpretation and emulated some of what was done in these two videos when i performed this for my high school band concert my sophomore year from memory. its a fun song and i hope some of my tips helped not for this song but for your playing in the future.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=YQPDG-T7BVM&feature=related

  • good breath control and then running the notes smoothly and everything will go well. ;]

try to avoid flying fingers. and shading the first tone hole on the top joint for the altissimo notes will give better response and better sound.

  • La clarinetista de la primera fila...very nice

  • the first like dun dun dun dun don don don don dun dun dun dun thing in the beg. just screams united airlines ahaha

  • i wanna know the notes for that intro! D:

  • How is the world did he get that one sound out at the beginning without totally bombing it? Holy Crapppppp. O.o

  • Awesome job! Coming from a clarinet player, that was great. The only thing I'd say is watch your fingers, (something I get called out on for a lot) they were skyrocketing. Still, amazing job! 5 stars!

  • aww lame no piano?

  • Dude you should play the recorder

  • wow! i'm wordless!! it's just... WOW!!

  • fantastic!!

  • how old is he!? He looks pretty young and playing like that! Amazing!

  • @lenxkaho08 he was 18 at the time

  • I WISH I WAS AS GOOD AS YOU!!

  • good stuff man. truly enjoyed the video. keep up the good work.

  • I love how the first clarinetist is bobbing her head to the music <3333

  • real nice i can only play a high c bove the staff and its kinda out of tune

  • i feel your pain, i just learned how to play the d and e above that and they're hard to keep in tune, as you can imagine. i shudder at the thought of going higher

  • As soon as you learn how to go higher it's such fun. Keep practising :)!

  • @CaptMag123 and you keep practicing spelling! :D

  • h'is amazing!!

  • You're absolutely incredible! ^-^

  • Wow. That was pretty awesome.

I'm not an expert on the piece, but I feel like you rushed that 17-let at the beginning. It starts out slower and then speeds up into the gliss.

But really, that was amazing, and memorized. Keep it up!!

  • The glissando actually requires a huge amount of air , control in the fingers, and a sustained embouchure. Even a small leak of air, and the clarinet will squeak. So, it worked better for me to just bypass the first half of the run, and save my air for the glissando in the upper octave. Plus, it's jazz and is meant to be interpreted by each player!

  • clarinet players should never complain about sustained embouchure

    its like a big recorder

the oboe is a killer embouchure wise T_T

  • The clarinet is not a big recorder, it is far superior. And the embouchure is just as bad.

  • i was comparing teh embouchure control and air control to a recorder, not the capabilities of the instrument. and the embouchure is absolutely no wehre near as hard.

  • Ah yes, sorry.

  • Exactly, not only is it jazz, but it's also your solo. You can do whatever the hell you want with it.

  • wonderfully played but it does sound rushed and notes could be held and filled out more.

  • that was amazing!

  • Wow!!! First off it was amazingly played and secondly, it was done with no music to read from. That just blows me away.

  • You did extremely well in my opinion.

I try and attempt the gliss and its pretty much an epic fail. Do you have any hints to help me improve it?

  • I learned to play the glissando, from D to C, almost entirely with my fingers. Play a high B, and practice sliding your finger off of the hole, to C. Gradually get slower and use a lot of air. Then move down to A and slide to B. To combine, begin sliding off the bottom finger, and when about a third of the hole is uncovered, begin sliding off the next finger. Just be confident and don't press down on the keys too hard. You can also shade notes by hovering lower finger slightly above lower holes.

  • Thank you so much that was very helpful advice... i noticed that i was pressing down extremely hard on the keys... which is why i had a hard time playing it. :)

  • amazing!! i cant play that fast!=]

  • I have never heard something so beutiful in my life inspires me to be a better clarinetist

  • Wow!! So amazing! I love it!!
