Question: the clanging is because those are permanent magnets Jamie is using. Would it be possible to make an electromagnet strong enough to hold his weight so that he could place the un-magnetized apparatus against the duct, then turn it on?

@megarockman Hehe. I think the only reason Jamie's worked the way they did wasn't shown in this clip. He was using some of the most powerful Earth magnets available. I don't know if electromagnets can be that strong without having something that is already pretty magnetic to start with, which would make a similar CLANG-y sound.

I think he should have padded the magnets with neoprene rubber (like what wetsuits are made from). It would not only have absorbed the impact but would have made the magnets stick.
