It's not Jacob though... =/

He did it with digital effects. This performance was produced solely for the DVD release of CATS. For some reason, the producer(s) decided that the simple effects used in a real stage version were not good enough. When you watch the dvd on a large TV, it is much more obvious that the lightning was added digitally.
