You should listen to the very source of NS mode of thinking when speak about relative weight of the allies. Thats our conviction- Russia beated us, not some ridiculous west forces. The relative value of one russian soldier is may be 4-5 american and 3 british ones. Indeed I have but not so much by the Brits as the Canadians. In fact the Canadians started a pissing war with the 12th SS Hitlerjügend Division. For some reason the Canadians gave the order not to accept the surrender of SS men this lead to Normandy being much bloodier then it needed be.
As to why Atrocities were so quick on the SS side it had to do with several factors. 1. They were Ideological Driven therefore they did not see any wrong in what they did. 2. Hitler said they would be pardoned after the War. Yet some divisions had very clean records like the 5th SS Wiking while others like 3rd SS Totenkopf had bad ones mostly because they were made up of Concentration Camp Guards.
Whereas units like 6th SS Nord showed Chivalry to the enemy by going out of their way to help the wounded as did other SS units. So my basic thought is they were no different then most combat units of the time.
