  • I think he's dreaming about becoming a baggage handler as it a more interesting job. The third pilot is usuallly called the autopilot. Fatigue is a major issue amongst pilots even though airlines don't like using the word. Nxt time u depart at night and comfortable fall asleep in the cabin then think about the poor pilot in the front. Hes only human too with just as much life problems and will also feel as sleepy as you.

  • Its almost a bit of a secret that on long flights its not unusual for pilots to take turns taking naps. I know we did when I was flying the line. It really improves safety because both pilots arrive refershed after a really long flight. The ALPA has asked the FAA once to formally allow pilots to take turns napping over the ocean but the FAA has not entertained such an idea as of yet. On longer routes there is a 3rd pilot to assist in napping.

  • If a guy I was flying with asked to have a nap I'd report him to CASA (here is Australia) immediately. It's a requirement for flights over 8 hours to have a Supernumerary First Officer (Second Officer with some airlines) and the Senior First Officer MUST be Relief Command endorsed. If you can't stay awake for 8 hours and a hot shutdown then don't bloody come to work.

  • You have no idea what you're talking about. Even Air Canada has a system of "Controlled Rest Periods" where one of the pilots can take a nap. I would like to see you fly for 15 hours straight and not be tired. It's much safer to nap in cruise and then be well rested for the landing. Don't you agree?

  • I'm familiar with the CRP at Air Canada through the first officer-incident on the Boeing 767-333 reg. C-FMXC in 2008 and through the NASA study in 1990. But according to my knowledge Air Canada is the only airliner which operate the CRP. Please let me know if other Airliner operates this type of rest periods.

  • Although it's not aloud (at the most airlines, according to my knowledge). Yes, on the longer flights you do have a double crew. So they do take turns to have a nap;) but they are, at these moments, with more then one crew member flying the plane!

  • facts: acft is a LET410, no autopilot, endurance of aicraft would be 4 hours, maybe 5 at best, flight is SEAir as seen from the sticker which is partially seen on the video, and, as a frequent tourist/flyer to boracay who's ridden with this ariline i've asked around their staff (who the bald pilot is) and been told that this pilot is either a certain capt. luckuneelaw or behasa...

  • What is happening here MIGHT not be illegal. In the airlines there is a thing called "controlled rest" where one of the pilots is allowed to sleep in his seat while the other pilot monitors everything. This is only allowed to occur during certain very strict conditions and must be very well planned. Im not so sure on a small aircraft like this though that it would be occuring, due to the shortness of the route and the type of aircraft, but regional airlines might allow controlled rest aswell.

  • Actually, on most airlines the "co-pilot," an incorrect term to start with, flies every other turn (captain flies 2 legs, first officer flies 2 legs). While the first officer is flying, the captain is technically the "co-pilot."

  • You are 1/2 right FlyWMU. Yes, the flight crew trades off duties every other flight (normally) - where the captain will fly one leg and the first officer will fly the next, etc. - however the captain is ALWAYS the PIC (pilot-in-command) of the aircraft and ALWAYS has the final authority over the operation of that flight. With the only exception being if he/she were incapacitated or something of that sort. The captain is never the "co-pilot." (God I hate that term)

  • sorry, here's what I meant with my other comment. X6insane6X, you are correct. The captain is PIC and has the final authority over the flight. I was using the terms pilot and co-pilot because people have used them here (I also hate the term co-pilot). I should have said, while the FO is flying, the CA is the PNF (pilot not flying) and is thus performing the duties of a co-pilot. Using these terms, the pilot is flying, the co-pilot is not.

  • However, the Captain will always have the final say as to the operation of the aircraft. The best Captains I've flown with have always said, "your leg, your fault, your brief..." and have always said that when it's my leg, they'll let me fly it however I want as long as it's SOP. This whole thing could just be cleared up by removing the term co-pilot and using the proper names: Captain, First Officer, Pilot Flying, Pilot Not Flying...seeing as those are the terms used on our checklists...

  • I am sorry you are miss informed. The Captain is always the Captain. and the First Officer is always the First Officer. The only thing that changes is who is acting as "pilot flying" and who is acting as "Pilot Not Flying"

  • That's what I was trying to say...I never meant to imply that the role of captain ever changes to the right seat...simply trying to get rid of the improper terms pilot and co-pilot. PF and PNF are the proper terms. I fly for the airlines so trust me, I know how it works...sorry for the confusion.

  • it's very easy to fall asleep while flying. I used to fly night charters, I'm talking like between midnight and 7am and when it's dark it's like setting an infant on a dryer to get it to sleep. Talking to atc helped but it's very possible. In this case pilot prob had a big lunch and told co-pilot he might wink out a few..no bigee really

  • Hey buddies, herez another captain explaining it for you. In some occasions during bad weather.. there are several reason you feel dizzy. If you get your rout and set your auto pilot. One Pilot is enough to look after the air craft. I let my fellow to sleep for a while during long flights. Dont worry your aircraft is safe.... One doubt if the other pilot is sleeping i ll leave everything on your good luck... May be you end up reaching USA instead of Heathrow... lol

  • depends if its a long haul or domestic flight, minimum two pilots; captain and co-pilot, on long haul flights, usually theres about three to five pilots. The captain only takes care of the major things such as take off; landings and a little of other things, but after that is done on a long haul flight, the pilot will go int oa room and sleep until it is time for him to come out and do his job again. ps: the captain sits on the left side, and the co pilot sits on the right side.
