Say hello to M. Bloom at Samosir Cottages for me, he's a cool dude who can get you everything you want...
And try the food at the Boruna restaurant, 20m away from Samosir Cottages, taste real good. If you smoke, you can get 500gr of local tobacco for $2.50 at the Parapat market on saturdays. Finally, if quiet is what you're seaking, get the matrimonial suite (although it's got problem of water) and not a bungalow near the lake. The noisiest days are during week-ends and public holidays.
indonesians, malaysians, filipinos are look alike same as people in southernmost provinces of thailand (yala, pattani, narathiwat). but the pattern of migration began in south taiwan to the philippines to borneo to other indonesian islands to malaysia reaching southern provinces of thailand...we're all from one race malay...but since the spanish colonized the philippines we've become mixed with spanish blood, chinese, etc..i wanna visit lake toba..is it safe to travel in indonesia nowadays?
but other countries give you advisory warning wether it's safe to travel or not in that country...of course there are safe places where you can visit...
Hi Eunice; I was replying to FallsBoyzz's racial supremacist comments and strange idea of racial purity.
It's a good idea to examine travel advisory notices with some caution. They often reflect the philosophies of the countries issuing them rather than the current risk-levels. Notice that after 11/09/01 we were told "go to the US, or the terrorists have won", but after the Bali and JKT bombs we are told to stay away.
My point was if a person is racist, it's better they stay home.
Bataks are peace loving people. That's why they always say "horas" to strangers. If you respond by saying horas back, that simple word means to them "glad to meet you, I intend no harm." And they literally take you at your word.
Hi; I lived for 7 months in Lake Toba and have a lot of Batak friends. In fact I lived and worked in North Sumatra for 2 years all together. I don't know whether you are Batak or not.
'Horas' has many layers of meaning, as does 'Hello'. According to some linguists and anthropologists 'Hello' comes from Arabic, has a rich history and can be used to indicate warmth, welcome, suspicion or pretty much any other emotion. My experience tells me 'Horas', similarly, can be used in lots of different ways too.
There is no such thing as a peace-loving people. People are people. All societies and cultures are made up of martyrs and bullies, saints and sinners, sociopaths and socialites, that is what it means to belong to the human race.

I think some of my comments have been misunderstood, maybe. The point I have been making all along is it is the quality of a person's character that matters. It is a person's behaviour and demeanour that determine whether or not a person is honourable not their ethnicity or race.
If one believes the race of a person matters at best they are tribalist and at worst racist.
I just spent two weeks there about three weeks ago. I had visited Samosir for the first time in 1982 and I was very happy to see it unchanged 25 years later. I ate mostly at Burana's. The food was so good there ! :))

With that kind of attitude and absence of rationality, it's not safe to travel anywhere. Stay home.
All blood is mixed, if you haven't learned that from travelling, you haven't learned anything.
