what matters is the tip of your fingers. If you have fat fingers but at the end they are thin or normal size then you will have no problem. The problem comes when the finger tips are too fat. In that case you will have trouble muting strings when playing open some chords for example. With practice you can play but maybe you are not going to be the best choice for the guitar. If you have fat fingers you should try the bass. In fact most famous guitarist have normal or thin fingers.

You have to choose an instrument that you know you are gonna be good at and you feel confortable with.

If you just play alone in your bedroom its fine but when if you go out there looking for a band you have to be good. For me its better to pick the right instrument rather than trying to be good at something you know you are not. Thing is that guitar is the intrument most of people wanna try but there are thousands more instruments.

Thanks for the video really needed it, was practicing and could not figure out anyway to not mute the chord, and was really doubting being able to play.

The problem with this video is that the player doesn't have FAT fingers - he simply has WIDE fingers. Those are not a problem for anybody.

The DEPTH and not the WIDTH of fingers is the most critical. People who have lots of soft tissue at the ends of their fingertips will project greater surace area onto the strings when playing chords and this causes muting.

Another problem is having a thumb that is too proximally localted (i.e. too close to base of hand).

This is really appreciated man! I too have short, fat tipped fingers and yes, it sucks learning to play guitar...I started way late in life, but I am struggling and trying...I want to play really bad and want to learn...so, with fat fingers, short and stubby, it is an uphill battle...appreciate you putting this out..WE NEED TO SEE STUFF LIKE THIS and encouragement! Great job on the video! This is exactly my problem right now. I know the notes now and can play them up, down, sharps, flats...etc... Just started trying chords and yep, I've got big hands. I'm 6'7" and I have a tough time fitting my fingers w/o "Dead fingering" some strings. I'll keep trying thanks to your encouragement!

my fingertips are waay fatter than yours - and very soft so calluses will not develop - but by putting a 2" wide fretboard (at nut) and making action very low does the job

i should make a video showing these fingertips and guitar setup...

thanks so much for making this video. made me feel alot better. especially since u have the same guitar as me as well lol. so i know it IS possible. but my 2nd problem is the length of my fingers are so short lol. and then the space between my thumb and pointer keeps muting the bottom string.

LOL i was bitten by the guitar bug years ago and went out and bought a guitar then got home and my finger tipes were way to wide and flopped onto other strings then i sold the guitar, years later i bought another one and the same thing happened very disappointing. I am an athlete and my fingers arent fat they are just solid big boned.

Thanks bro, I don't have huge fingers, just blocky ones. The tips are basically flat and squared off. It hasn't been easy learing, but nothing worth having or doing comes easy right? i did something easier, I switched to bass :)

and I feel very confortable with the instrument.

Guitar was very small for my fingers.

If you have big hands then you were born to be a bassist or you will be a better bassist.

Lordramos - Can you wrap your thumb over the top two strings ?I don't think you are that much of a disadvantage with wide fingers.How about having fingers like mine.Mine are fat in the true meaning.If you look at my hand from a side view,my fingers look like they have bi-cept muscles on every joint.That's way worse than what you have to deal with.I'm trying to find information on hand surgery,kind of like liposuction.That's how bad I want to play.I hate dampening strings that arent suppose to.
