It's funny that everybody is comparing them like it's a contest, and not one person has mentioned how well they play together. Some beautiful moments.
@Ringophiliac I totally agree with you. They're missing the point. This is a conversation between to people who speak the language of modern jazz really well. If you have listened to and studied this music long enough to follow and appreciate the way they interact, you understand what a magical treat this performance is.
did yaw catch that out of tune "B" at 2:41? yes they are both masters in their own right, but kenny's solo is telling you a story....his lines are more melodic....and each chorus that passes by its a different approach but stays consistent to what ever approach he chooses...theyre both really great though...
Yes, that B (and other notes in that register) seem to be some of the 1st notes to go out of tune on many pianos. Often it's near the 'break" in the harp, between the mid treble to the upper treble.
Man you don't know the half of it. My cock is TINY! Absolutely minuscule. I can't even begin to describe! That's why I use a 15" razor tipped dildo on your mother, sister and father. They can't get enough of me!
Whether Mehldau is Jewish, Muslim, Bahai, or for that matter belonging to any other faith community does not detract from the wonderful musician that he is. Religious spirituality might inspire the mortal genius to create tonality that is unique and beautiful and that could or could not have come from any faith.
Yes, they're both great, but in my opinion, Mehldau's level of musical thinking is more complex....and is armonic conception more advanced! This does NOT means that Barron is "inferior" musically speaking, just means that for my sensibility i prefer Brad's approach, darker and more "difficult" than Kenny's.
I transcribed Kenny Barron's solo and melody to this on the album "Green Chimneys". Maybe I'll post it up somewhere if anyone wants it. Check out my video of On Green Dolphin Street while u wait. :)
Mehldau's dynamics are simply amazing. The whole palette of textures he has is simply admirable. And I like his imaginative approach to improvisation a lot more than Barron's too.
While you might prefer Mehldau's soloing (which is indeed very innovative), consider that Kenny Barron simply hears music differently and has alternate approach to soloing. Neither is really better or worse. Both are masters in their own right.
True. Everything you said is very valid... but all I said I liked his approach more than Barron's. Wether Barron hears music differently or not has nothing got to do with it and won't change my decision. It is not a critique of Barron, it is a statement of which one do I identify with the most
Thumbs up @Ringofiliac.

Man, this is GREAT! Check at 2:50: mr. Barron make some kind of Art Tatum lick. Anyway, two real contemporary masters of improvised piano...

I love Barron's use of Tritone subs and Mehldaus creative intervals, groove, and use of both hands.
