  • great drummers! great people! great musicians!.........see htose guys playing makes me feel good.

  • 0-1

  • Pair of fine drummers, however - please dont get your favourite drummer confused with who is actually the best, there are numerous players out their who are technically superior to both - I really dont think JoJo Mayer, Thomas Lang or Gavin Harrison will be shitting themselves in fear when watching Mike or Charlie.

  • probably 2 o th top 10 drummers o al-time

  • Indians is one of my favourite song

  • I would start jacking at 2:58 too just like you did

  • dam i just want them to continue playing six o clock, suck a frigan awesome song

  • That song is Indians, buy Anthrax. That is why Charlie smiles, it is his groove. The song is on Among the Living.

  • why wie should buy anthrax xD

  • Both drummers are great!

I love Mike Portnoy, not only because of his great drumming but also because of his personality. Cool, down-to-earth guy, always speaking nicely about the bands that influenced him.

  • i disagree about dave and steve smith but buddy rich is good 2 and maybe for taste stewart copeland? come on dude there is so many don't single(in this case triple lol) out those three

  • I like all drummers that u mentioned. But my fav drummer as BAND DRUMMER not solo is Mike, b/c he sounds awesome with Dream Theater. End of topic! I

  • If someone can give me the titles of the songs and the times, i'll insert it with captions so nobody has to ask again

  • Both FUCKING amazing drummers

  • Q F T ! ! ! :)

  • i won't make comparisons for this video , benante is one of the first drummers who popularised the "beat blast " he is a great metal and rock drummer (ps : he is my favorite drummer cause i love anthrax !!! (favorite band to )) but i must definitely say that portnoy can play much different styles ( sry for my english i m french )

  • LOL

50 ways to leave your lover,

    Frankenstein...

    amazing!

  • I don't care who's better, I love these players both! And both Dream Theater and Anthrax! This video is cool, I would have pay a lot to see that LIVE!

  • That's your opinion.

So who the hell are you?

Accomplishments of Benante exceed those of Portnoy.

  • ehhh..... no. they dont. however, they are close. i know bernante popularized the blast and whatnot, but portnoy revolutionized metal drumming by almost single-handedly (w/ some influence from rush and styx) incorporated prog drumming into it. benante doesnt come close to that.

  • Uh, no.

Portnoy, himself, has even said that Fates Warning is the band that did it all first.

  • youre definitely right, but you should know that many drummers consider portnoy to be one of the most revolutionary drummers ever. kinda just putting that obvious little piece of info out there...

  • Name them.

Portnoy hasn't done anything new or groundbreaking.

  • im honestly surprised that you cant think of one... maybe drummers like kirch, jarzombek, bittner, and any other prog metal drummer out there. he was really the first drummer to incorporate funk and jazz into metal. before you decide to make another overly confident smartass remark, just do us all a favor and look it up.

  • Bullshit.

The Jarzombek brothers were doing Prog long before DT came about. Watchtower is pretty much the first Prog Metal band ever.

There are no Funk elements in Portnoy's playing.

Arguably the first Jazzy Metal drummer is Bill Ward, drummer for Sabbath.

    Bittner doesn't play Prog.

Mark Zonder played Prog before Portnoy, and he played in Fates Warning.

Ricky Colacula of Watchtower was playing Prog Metal before Dream Theater was even formed.

  • all of this coming from a "drummer" who can barely even keep time...

dude, portnoy has chops. portnoy has funky beats. portnoy is the most recognized prog drummer in the drumming community. you can dissect my argument all you like, but manipulating someones words. what im ultimately saying is that portnoys style is unique. can you stomach that? can you deal w/ these facts, or are you gonna whip out another music history lesson i already knew? get a clue dude. portnoys a drum god.

  • Tell me what's funky about his playing. There are no Funk elements. Just because he has his grooves does not mean he plays in a Funk style.

Neil Peart is the most recognized Prog drummer, not Portnoy.

If you knew your shit about "music history" you wouldn't be arguing these facts in the first place. What he's playing was done long before him. Portnoy even admitted that himself when he stated that everything they've done was already done by Fates Warning.

  • goddamn you seem to know about drumming and everything about everything in general. ill bet youre one of those douches who will argue the meaning of life.

he INCORPORATES funk and jazz elements. incorporating and solely playing are two completely different aspects. you could easly say that thats what makes prog prog.

ok for one where the hell did he admit that. i didnt get any email. i havent seen any articles, interviews, or magazines that say that anywhere. lets see it.

  • Ok, what elements of Funk does he incorporate? Simply groovy playing won't suffice.

On the 2005 expanded edition rerelease of Fates Warning's Awaken the Guardian Mike Portnoy said this in the liner notes: "very often fans and critics credit Dream Theater for creating a whole new genre of progressive metal music in the late '80s/early '90s, . . . but the truth is Fates Warning were doing it years before us."

  • ...yeah some groves such as his take on the one drop when he throws it into 7/8 w/ some 16ths and 32nds on the hats definitely do the trick. you know your music history, ill give you that, but your pseudo knowledge of drums is about as deep as ive ever seen. minimal incorporation of classic time sigs and chops can definitely lend credence enough to classify him as a funky and jazzy metal drummer.

see, thats deff. the reason why i didnt know that. he hasnt made some huge public statement.

  • Anything that simply grooves or moves isn't exactly Funk playing. Funk playing is often fat, played at mid tempo, and is chock-full of syncopation and off-beat accents. Funk is very close to Jazz, but what I hear in Portnoy is more a Jazz influence than Funk.

What exactly are you referencing with "the one drop"? Are you talking about the rhythm in Bob Marley's song One Drop?

  • I was there.

Don't mean to brag or anything, just saying...

    AMAZING.

  • rock and roll cover at about 1:40 was awesome. bonham ftw

  • that rendition of 6:00 by the guest drummer was awesome!

  • And so does Vinnie Paul.

  • Lars is a fun drummer, not a great drummer, there are few drummers like portnoy or peart that are both amazing and fun to listen to on there own.

  • Portnoy is the guy that can cover all those bands (and Dream Theater does) Benante is the guy who drums the crap out of practically every metal drummer.

Lars Ulrich is a little kid compared to Charlie

  • stop complaining about lars' drumming we get it we can see that

  • Someones touchy

  • dont forget dave lombardo

  • Benante deffinately wins

  • he covers a song by portnoy, thats why, portnoy has better drum parts in Dream Theater, Benante's drumming in Anthrax is no where close to Portnoy's in Dream Theater

  • It's a duet, not a battle. Portnoy is immortal, and therefor cannot lose even if they WERE battling.

  • Hmph. I can do that by myself. XD

  • Anthrax tune called "Indians"

    From "Among the Living," methinks...

  • Whats the song around the 3 min mark

  • The part at 1:38 sounds familiar to me...Which song is this from?

  • Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

  • funny how the drummers from the bands of the thrash four have all progressed technically except lars ulrich oh well hes still awesome

  • so true lol

  • they look like good friends

  • the beat at 1.52 reminds me of 50 ways to leave your lover. is that the song?

  • Just great seeing to dudes, having fun, together, no competion, just JAMM!

  • blasphemy

  • well, you don't but many people around the world do.

They're not garbage. At least they're better than slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold.

    And crap like trivium.

  • OH MY GOD fuckin Benante playin 6;00 that was unexpected and totally awesome.

  • lars ulrich!!! ha, hed never fucking keep up. so untalented

  • dude they are freakin awesome way better than joey jordison lol they should add on to it and add two more drummers on it dave lombardo and lars ulrich lol have a 4 man drum set

  • Thats awesome how they did a cover of eachother's material...

  • No one beats Portnoy.

  • ...Except for Sean Reinert.

  • i soooo wanna go on tht kit, can't wait to see dream theater in june!

    \m/\m/

  • SAME!!!!!

  • Oh my gooooood!!!! They're god!!!!!!!!!!

  • This was effin sweet. I liked Charlie before, but this solidifies his mad skills!

  • woot fkn awsom

  • Two of the best drummers alive right here

  • not even close.

  • Incredible. The two of them together just flying but in sync. Terrific stuff!

  • what is the song played at 3:51

  • Dream Theater - 6:00

    ; )

  • It's "six o' clock" by dream theater

  • Charlie fucking pwns

  • is the frame ratio slower then the audio? It doesnt seem to be synced?

  • ok, just listened to the entire thing, definitely not the one I was at, hahahaha, but still damn good.

  • I was at this show! Dream Theater's 20th anniversary tour, they played for like 2 and a half hours straight, ended with Learning to Live! They started playing Slayer in the middle of this solo! Effin' Aye!

  • I was there.

    I WAS THERE!

So fucking nuts, my head blew up, I swear.

  • It's Anthrax Indians dingaling....classic mosh staple. (2:51)

  • I like the 'Rock and Roll,' little section in there. And the 'Frankenstein,' section.

  • what is the song played at 2:51

  • what is the last song they play?!?!?! JESUS i cant find it

  • 6:00 By Dream Theater on the album Awake (one of my favs =D)

  • no its not 6:00 its stockholm syndrome... i just found that out

  • stockholm syndrome is a song by muse. im 100% positive that the last song they play is "6:00". listen to the song you'll see.

  • oooo sorry i was going off of mike portnoys dvd "in constant motion" they have this vid, but charlie and mike play stockholm syndrome as their last, after 6:00. do u know what it is they play before 6:00?

  • Indians by Anthrax, I didn't know it myself either, but this vid is posted by another user but with working image, I asked it there some time ago ;-)

  • ... e tutti a casa .....

  • My goodness!, such a rare ocasion to see these two masters gangbang those drums really nice but with this video you don't actually see them even playing!!! anyone got a link to see one working? or am I missing somekind of codec??? or what!!!
