can someone tell me if the automatic is worth it. my wife cant drive stick and i dont think she even wants to learn. 4 speed does not seem very fun or even worth it. Why are they still stuck in the early 80s with a 4 speed?
@NickHimSeIf My 2001 Forester has the automatic and as far as autos go, it's really not bad. I was hesitant, as I am usually a manual driver from when I owned older E36 BMW's, but I can honestly say it's a good automatic system. Boring? Totally, like all automatics. But sturdy and the gear changes are nice and smooth.
@SovietMordor Thanks Bro that is good to know. Well she is going to be going from the VW gti with DSG to this. I think its more practical for us but I dont think she going to like it haha. Is it slow? Can you compare to any other cars out there right now? How is the high way driving?
@NickHimSeIf It's not slow, but I wouldn't call it fast. You'll maybe do 120 flat out if you want to really torture it and the 0-60 isn't brilliant either, something like ten seconds? Although when you consider that it's basically a big beefy Impreza that's shaped like a box powered by only a 4cyl (at least the older ones anyway), it's not bad. The highway driving is very nice; it is insanely comfortable and the gas mileage is okay (I tend to average around 25).
@NickHimSeIf I can't really compare it to other cars in it's class because I haven't driven them, but chances are I'd take a Forester over something like a Rav4 any day. I mean, if you have the money to spring for something like a Land Rover Discovery or a Toyota FJ Cruiser, I would definitely consider those as options also.
Continued **** 06 Forester***Once I was running late for work and was driving along a mountain road. I was doing about 55mph when I came over this hill and at the bottom the road had water across it. Didn't have time to brake so I held on. That car actually lost contact with the road but I gained contact on the other side of the wash out. My heart was in my throat. I actually screamed then began to laugh because the car and I survived. That was WILD!! Waiting for the F-STi
I have a 06 Forester with 175,000miles. It is the most reliable car I have ever owned. I drive the Grape Vine at least 3 or 4 times a year on my way to LA and San Diego. It's usually loaded down too. I LOVE IT. I've owned 3 Hondas, 2 BMW 7&5, 3 GMC/CHEVY trucks, and 1 Tribeca 08 and by far this car is my favorite. I don't really understand it sometimes. I don't even want my husband driving it. He's my mechanic SO I guess he has to sometimes.
@loweredtalon: I purchased my forester about 8 months ago. So far this is the best "normal" car I have ever driven. It handles just about anything. I also had a 2004 rav4 but even if it was quite good it was nothing compared to the forester. I was also considering the new 2010 model but I found it to be more like driving a spaceship so I went for the 2005 model instead - I find it a much better car, and since it was used it was quite a bit cheaper as well ;)
Took a demo 2010 Forester for a test drive and the halfwit car salesman directed me straight onto a freeway for 10 kays before doing a u turn and driving the same freeway back to the yard. Yeah really impressed me...NOT! Did nothing for me and will look else where. The only excitement on that test drive was when a gust of wind nearly blew the car off the road as they handle poorly. Next....
lol handle poorly hahahaha, one thing that subaru dose right is handle. lol most likely the driver is the problem, but I understand you 17 and just got your license lol everything is scary for you now ;)
Ya, keyword is wannabes though (like half-tuned civics).
The forester wouldn't beat out any decent race car, though, which is why there's the wrx sti (which I was thinking about getting, but it's not as versatile as a forester or outback, it costs more, and I like to go camping).
230hp + awd (stock) would easily beat out any stock civic or corolla or any other wannabe street racing cars (i don't think many people choose corollas as a tuning car, but I've seen em).
I'm even considering a for ranger sport because I like Ford and it has a 4L V6 and it comes in manual. And they're only about 2/3 the price of a Outback 3.6R.
fuck u king pc of shit, if u luv suabru ud luv the whole family, go back to ur little world where u think ur the best, texas maybe red neck , my stock bike would eat ur pc of shit sti,
That's like saying if you love a band you love all their songs, which is almost never the case unless you're a fanboy (loving something and being a fanboy are not the same).
i just got stuck in the snow on the middle of a mountain driving my parents forester 2.0x cause i was bored.. took me 20 minutes to dig it out of it without a shovel:)
everytime i take my forester off roading i get the feeling that i'm going to bottom out, not enough clearance for the off roading i wanna do, heck you could just barely hop over a curb in this thing without worrying about sanding down the skid plate.
Power is indeed a crucial part but there are other aspects to what you refer to as "offroading" that are at time more important than raw power. And a Forester without turbo has plenty of power.

C'mon guys, when is it going off road. That's a highway in Oz. Show what they can really do, like 60 clicks down the beach or take into the bush. I own a Honda but am looking at the new Forester; great cars.
The Forester is capable offroad for a car-based SUV, but the FJ Cruiser can handle much more challenging terrain (which it's designed for in the first place). However, on paved surfaces, the Forester is superior in most respects. It rides and handles like a car and gets better gas mileage (with the base engine) than many family sedans.
if you plan on any real offroading go either solid front axle jeep, early 90's toyota, or land rover defender. the forester and fj cruiser are both not going to be anything exciting offroad. if the occasional weekend outing no more serious than what is in this vid is all you plan on, then a forester would do nicely. even though i personally would never buy one.

They already make a 4 cylinder with turbo...puts about 230hp into it which is plenty for that little car.
I mean you won't be doing any street racing but that's not what the forester was meant for. If you want a street car go for the wrx ; )
