I haven't seen this movie, but according to the IMDB synopsis: two guys go for a hike but "forget to bring any water or food with them." UM. I'm sorry -- someone please tell me there's more to it than that. I refuse to believe that someone would make a movie on such an unbelievable, baseless plot. Who would forget to bring food and water??

People are looking at the movie the wrong way. Sure, it got really boring at times. But it was a success in that it made us feel what they were feeling. Those extremely long shots of them walking personally gave me a hopeless and desperate feeling. Think about having to walk in the desert, essentially nowhere, for days. That's why they would make shots go so slowly, to let the camera express the emotion. That feeling of time barely moving along, the staggering heat, and the hopelessness.
all who have seen this film should have been aware by the title alone they were walking in to a minimalists vision of film making. so rather than fight and complain on a 'youtube comments' section go watch something else while the rest of us enjoy this and other 'nothing happens' films such as Moon, Badlands and Last Days.
Every year, between 150-200 (!!) people get lost in the middle west of the USA. Around 5-10% are never found again. Even if this movie isn't based on one single, true story, it IS based on the stories of many people who never lived to find their car again. And this is, in my eyes quite scary actually. I have been hiking in the exact same region, the movie was shot and if you've not done this yourself, you would never guess how easy it is, to get lost. I find this to be an absolutely amazing film

This film has a beautiful, hypnotic atmosphere that many films never achieve. Yes, it was also dreadfully slow.
I like this because its different. This movie is not like the one's in the theatres. It shows a depth that not everyone would understand. Gerry is a really decent movie, and if people have the patience to think about it, they would think so too. Not every movie has to be straight in your face action. Its refreshing to see that there are movies out there that are like this. ♥
so about ten minutes into the movie i was like, "ok, this is boring, im gonna take it out." i ended up watching the entire movie......it was just so mezmerizing. the dialogue was minimal, the landscape was extraordinary, and it was great seeing matt in a role where he didn't have ten pages of dialogue in one scene. loved it.

This movie was hard to watch the first time cuz i wasn into such motionless (if u get my term) films. but< ive matured about such things, and i see the movie wasn so muchto be made as a "movie" but more so as beautiful imagery. Gus van sant makes alot of quiet movies with tons of silent walking seens. but it is simply his umique style of creating emotion in a seen. "Paranoid Park" is a great exaample.

I saw Koyannasquatsi and loved it for its images (first 10 minutes are dull, then it picks up). No words or anything, just awesome shots and great images with a strong message.
This movie though... ok for me the desert is not a 'great image'. It looks hot and repetitive. And as for a message... it didn't even have one.

To be honest, my fitness instructor said to wear black (I know, contrary to popular belief) because it blocks the sun's harmful UV rays, unlike white, although noticeably cooler, retains the UV rays, increasing chances of skin cancer.
From an aesthetic standpoint, I think Savides/Van Sant thought white shirts conflicted with what they wanted to show cinematographically.
@ledamate What does one of the actors wearing a black shirt and not taking a bottle of water have to do with how much you enjoyed the movie? You think EVERYONE who goes into the desert doesn't wear black - what about Lawrence of Arabia? People do. It's not like they were going camping or nothing.
@ledamate And as for the water, well so what. I go out for 4-5 hour walks in 40 degree heat without water. Given I'm quite thirsty when I get home but I know I can do without for the walk. These guys went to see 'the thing' and the movie gives the impression it is not a huge walk - maybe an hour or so at most. And they're young men; we are a reckless and cockheaded bunch who think we can do whatever we want. They may have had water in the car also.

great movie. the first time i watched it, it was alright, but the second time (two years later) i was ready and more open to the style and feel. Overall, a truly different and powerful film. It captures a lot of emotion in a very unconventional way.

This movie was hard to watch the first time cuz i wasn into such motionless (if u get my term) films. but< ive matured about such things, and i see the movie wasn so muchto be made as a "movie" but more so as beautiful imagery. Gus van sant makes alot of quiet movies with tons of silent walking seens. but it is simply his umique style of creating emotion in a seen. "Paranoid Park" is a great exaample.

HELP! ....there are many variations to Arvo Parts 'Spiegel in Spiegel'- this is the best version I have heard by far BUT cannot find out who it is actually played by. Can someone PLEASE help as I really must get this version from somewhere. Apparantly, the film lists no credits?!

I hated this movie. It was the most boring "hey look! its art!!!" piece of shit flick I ever had to endure. I don't need a crappy movie like this to contemplate life or the meaningfulness of 2 morons walking in the desert.

wow even with the opening piano line I could feel the pretentiousness building up. I enjoy a good artsy movie, but movies about people just getting lost in an average situation showing people having average conversations is not some masterpiece, it is not some divine experience of creativity or a provocative work of art that really makes you think, it's just 2 guys getting lost in the desert.

It's Arvo Part, very deep composer...And this is not a artsy movie, it's very deep...like movies from Tarkovsky,Kubrick,Kurosawa,Jarmusch,Kaurismaki and others. It is not for everybody...especially not for you. Sorry...go watch Star Wars and Titanic or maybe Minority report,Next, gone in 60 seconds and many more stupid movies from hollywood.

And as for Bergman, I don't even really know who that is. I also don't see how I am elitist, because I don't recall saying that I know more than anyone. I saw Koyannasquatsi and loved it for its images (first 10 minutes are dull, then it picks up). No words or anything, just awesome shots and great images with a strong message.
This movie though... ok for me the desert is not a 'great image'. It looks hot and repetitive. And as for a message... it didn't even have one.
Just because you go and push the conventional movie standards does not necessarily make what you just did art.

I honestly can't see the appeal in these artsy movies. I know some of these guys just love going all philosophical and crap while watching these because apparently they can see the deeper meaning. Most of these movies aren't entertaining. Nothing happens.

To be honest, my fitness instructor said to wear black (I know, contrary to popular belief) because it blocks the sun's harmful UV rays, unlike white, although noticeably cooler, retains the UV rays, increasing chances of skin cancer.
From an aesthetic standpoint, I think Savides/Van Sant thought white shirts conflicted with what they wanted to show cinematographically.

@ledamate What does one of the actors wearing a black shirt and not taking a bottle of water have to do with how much you enjoyed the movie? You think EVERYONE who goes into the desert doesn't wear black - what about Lawrence of Arabia? People do. It's not like they were going camping or nothing.

@ledamate And as for the water, well so what. I go out for 4-5 hour walks in 40 degree heat without water. Given I'm quite thirsty when I get home but I know I can do without for the walk. These guys went to see 'the thing' and the movie gives the impression it is not a huge walk - maybe an hour or so at most. And they're young men; we are a reckless and cockheaded bunch who think we can do whatever we want. They may have had water in the car also.

great movie. the first time i watched it, it was alright, but the second time (two years later) i was ready and more open to the style and feel. Overall, a truly different and powerful film. It captures a lot of emotion in a very unconventional way.
