Donny did his own version of What's Going On on his "These Songs For You Live" album. Which Elliott quoted as being one of his favorite albums of all time.

I don't think it's about Elliott copying Donny Hathaway. I think that he is paying tribute more so than anything else. Right after Idol and at the time of his performances at the VA State Fair he didn't have his own material so why not do the music of someone he idolizes.
