Listened to the advice of Zvi Zamir the head of Mossad (who was at the rescue mission), had better lighting at the airport, equipped the snipers with more suitable rifles, not positioned snipers in each others lines of fire, made sure that the roads surrounding the airport were cordened off from sightseers, sent the armoured cars in when the firing broke out (not forget all about it until the end of the firefight)...

The whole affair was a shambles. Watch the documentary film One Day In September to hear testimonies of those present. Even the German authorities were deeply embarrased by the outcome of the mission, and set up a specialised anti-terrorist division shortly after.
I own One Day In September. All the hostages would have died regardless. "Planning" in military operations is 50% bullshit. What should have happened is a storming of the apartment. Maybe half would have lived. The poor bastards were finished the minute they were abducted. Palestinians killed them. NOT German ineptitude.
I think you are right about the storming of the apartment, although there would have been little or no suprise element as the terrorists could see the build up on TV.
