I had opportunity to meet Mr. Rizzuto in Brick Town where he called home in his latter years. Such a nice man, and his baseball legacy speaks for itself.
Joe makes a good point. Until the 1960's, or 70's, middle infielders weren't expected to be good hitters. They were the there for defense. But Rizzuto had a pretty decent BA during his peak years.
Very sad to see Yog lose his best friend. I can only imagine how painful that was for him. I loved watching games back in the day when I was a kid and Scooter was doing play by play. As bad as our Yanks were in the late 80's and early 90's, he always kept things entertaining. Some great summer memories of those days!:-)
As a big baseball and NY Yankees fan i had the oppertunnity alot of my life and getting to hear scooter and bobby murcer as well. Rest in peace the two Yankees for life
Yogi is one of the greatest players ever to play the game.Yogi is also one of the greatest people to represent the game,he is a true classic. The Hall Of Fame would not be the same without him!!!!!!!!!!
@mvp91593 Yogi won three MVP Awards to Bench's two, and Bill James said Yogi is the greatest offensive catcher in history. There's room in the Hall of Fame for both. No need to cut one of them down. This is baseball, not war.
@fek2000 Thank you for your comment. I am truly stunned by the viciousness of some of the comments. This generation was so.....well, every positive adjective you can name. I appreciate them for it. God bless Phil, Yogi, and the rest of this era, who thought they owed baseball.
I second that , Holy Cow...I had the pleasure to meet him years ago, even tough i'm a mets fan but I will always root for any NY team my grandson is a diehard yankee fan and that makes me also a yankee fan.
Phill RIZZUTO TOLD A GREAT STORY. about yogi playing right field near end of season whity ford trying to win #20 .with 1-0 lead in last inning yogi bats a ball over the right field wall for HR for opposite team. whity didnt get #20 THAT DAY . yoGI tells a different story that the HR went way over his head in right field. it was near end of season yanks were trying to preserve yogis knees by playing him in right field that game.
First and foremost, I am a fan of the game. I love the history of it. I miss playing it. All the time, when I was a kid I would play, always behind home plate cause I was too slow to do anything else.
Second, I'm a Cubs fan. Proud of it no matter what. Thats just me.
Third, I have a lot of respect for the Yanks, especially during Yogi's era. All the great Yanks like Yogi, Whitey, Don, Phil, Roger, Moose, Elston, Billy and especially Mickey. Man, thats a great lineup.
Like Casey Stengel (possibly the greatest manager in history ((only Weaver and McGraw to contend with )) ) said, i never play a game without my man, meaning Yogi. Yogi was the most important player the Yankees had... why do you think he was part of more WS wins than anybody else?
i agree, but a lot of guys should not be in like bill mazeroski, and i dont like ozzie smith being in, he was a one dimensional player, i would put tim raines in over ozzie smith, Phil got a lot of support and so many people were campaigning for him
i really do think that he is the best catcher ever i just got his autograph yesterday my friend was the bat boy at the spring training game and he got his autograph for me i gave it to my other friend though because his grandfather is dying of cancer and he started crying i felt so bad and that ball meant alot to me but i had to give it to him
i really do think that he is the best catcher ever i just got his autograph yesterday my friend was the bat boy at the spring training game and he got his autograph for me i gave it to my other friend though because his grandfather is dying of cancer and he started crying i felt so bad and that ball meant alot to me but i had to give it to him

He's in the hall of fame because he was fortunate to be on great championship teams. He might be the least deserving person in the hall of fame. Anyone who disagrees is obviously biased.
Force283 your an a-hole Phil Rizzuto was a great player! How dare you say that! I bet your a Red Sox fan! WEll you know what they are horrible and they will never be as good as the Yanks cus they s**k! Yeh that's right they s**k! Don't even try to leave a comment know buddy cause u are so rude you little idiot!!!
Ted Williams was quoted as saying that the difference between the Yankees and the Red Sox of the 40's and 50's was...........................Phil Rizzuto!
In other words Williams believed that if the Sox had had Rizzuto, then the Sox would have won all those pennants. Rizzuto was also an MVP one year.
i have had the pleasure of meeting yogi many many times and he treats you as the most important person in the world even though you are a regular joe and he is always nice to everyone! and i mean everyone. what a beautiful man.
qman66. You are NOT a nice person. Yogi Berra is NOT gay and old. Well, he may be older than some people in the world, but he's NOT gay. And, Joe Torre is not a ****. Even if I was not a Yankee fan, which I AM, I would still be sad. The guy who commented below me said the right stuff. Phil will be missed. R.I.P. Scooter. "Holy Cow!" Sorry that this comment is so long.
I'm a life long Mets fan. I am also a life long Yankee hater. Despite it all, I am saddened by the passing of this personable, lovable baseball legend- what can you say about a man like Phil Rizzuto that can cause even this Yankee hater to bow his head in respect? R.I.P. Scooter.
i never got the oppurtunity to watch the scooter play or hear him broadcast. but i just know that he was an amazing person, RIP phil. everyone misses you greatly
I remember first hearing his broadcast in 1977-78 when I was 7-8. He was one of the first teachers I ever had preaching the fundamentals of baseball. While my playing career ended when I received my H.S. Diploma, I will teach my son what he taught me.
RIP Phil Prosciutto...

Phil Rizzuto the LEGEND that survived until OUR GENERATION.
To listen to him EVERY NIGHT, along with Bill White, and Frank Messer was the best of all time.
