If I had to choose which one of Henry's six wives I wanted to be, I would definitely choose Anne of Cleves. Although Katharine of Aragon was my all-time favorite, I do not think that I could endure the trials and pain she experienced with grace and dignity. Anne, on the other hand, had nothing to lose by agreeing that the marriage was invalid. She got to keep her life, was granted lots of property and wealth by Henry, and did not have to marry. I especially like the last part- did NOT marry
I'm German and I love The Tudors, but her portrayal of Anne seems SO over the top to me. The accent is horrible. Doesn't sound anything like a German person who's speaking English. And why does she keep saying German words inbetween?? So annoying
Interesting how Mary would later become a very close friend of Anne of Cleves, and even more interesting that Anne would convert to Catholicism during the reign of Mary.
Joss Stone was so awesome at protraying Anne of Cleaves, and Anne got the most luck out of all the Queens and she got to keep her dignity and head all in one day. Go Anne!
I have no idea why they chose to veil the princess. It's a little ridiculous! Poor Anne! She already had two strikes against her marriage to Henry 8. Thank God she had alot of common sense and luck on her side.
I'm german, too, and I agree that a native speaker would have done better of course, however, I think Joss Stone didn't do such a bad job imitating the accent
I think Mary's life was way harder than Elizabeths; it was horrible that Anne Boleyn was killed when Elizabeth was just a baby (3 yrs old), and she was put in the tower(also put on "house arrest" and suspected of treason for yrs by her own sister). Mary was the one that had a harder life...she was forbidden to see her mother (even when she was about to die, he still was denied to see her), she was ignored by her father, and forced to be Elizabeth's servant when she was born.
@sophieluve Then again, Elizebeth spent her growing life living with the man who had her own mother killed and after Henry's death she was often sexually harassed by Thomas Seymour, which got her into a lot of trouble and put her title and reputation in serious political risk. She was also arrested by her own sister and was close to being put to death. On top of that, much like Mary, Elizabeth had to fight for her title as queen, so I think we're equal on who's life was harder.
Mary (sadly known to history as Bloody Mary) was badly damaged in so many ways - by her mother's brutal treatment by her father, by her father's brutal treatment of her. She truly believed she was meant to rule and that she was doing what was right. She was, however, completely unfit to be Queen. (She was also nowhere near as pretty as the actress playing her in this series, according to historians.)
Me too. For a singer, she did a very good job. If this is her debut, I am very impressed that she could do it with a German Accent. Plus, she manage to hold her screen presence with the other actors/actresses who probably have much more trainings in those acting schools-cum-stage performance. And, she's the only woman in the entire series who need not to do sex scene with JRM, which she pointed out with relief during her interview
I'm sorry, but Mary is a pain in the ass! Henry should have beheaded her annoying ass instead of everybody else! All she does is bitch and moan over stupid stuff! UGH!
Why would he behead his daughter? Mary is not a pain in this ass; she was just raised in a way that taught her to dislike protesants. If you think about it, it is because of the protestants that her father was able to divorce her mother, it is them that took her her mother away from her and her father, it is them that would beat her so that she would sign an oath declaring herself a bastard. I think she had her reasons... Also, at that time, a lot of people hated protestants... Not just her.
I can understand that but as a result she complains about the most asinine things that it becomes annoying to watch. Also, when she got older she became intensity paranoid about almost everything.
I know right. And everyone always plays the 'she had a terrible childhood' card, but Elizabeth got her HEAD cut cut off by her father and she didn't turn into a psycho
I think you mean Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth's mother. But yes I know what you mean. Elizabeth had a good head on her shoulders, and by what I've read she had it worse then Mary. But then, Elizabeth (to me atleast) was a lot like her mother Anne. She was strong even under the worse circumstances, and always kept her eye on the prise. Which is why Elizabeth sucessed in the end. All of Henry's kids (except Edward) had horrible childhoods. Henry Fitzroy, Mary, Elizabeth I. Their father was an ASS.
True. But you have to remember, you don't remember things when you're two years old--Elizabeth lost her mom at that age, and while it's painful to grow up without a mother--she grew up with things being that way. Mary had a fairytale ripped from her--to be the "pearl" of her father's eyes and then not? And like Constance West said, Elizabeth was a lot stronger. Mary was known to have been a very obedient person--she didn't take after her mother in manners of strength.
You're right. Elizabeth's was harder! Her mother was killed, she was dubbed the bastard of a whore, she was sexually harassed by her step father, and threatened to be executed by her older sister. OH YEAH! Mary's childhood was much harder! Before you open your mouth and allow such asinine things to come out be sure to check your facts!
Mary was separated from her mother from the age of 15 on and lived in fear of being killed, she was called illegitimate and a bastard forced to give her title over to Elizabeth, she had mental and physical illness due to the stress throughout her teen years which went into adult hood, she was forced to denounce her mother or be killed and lived with the guilt most of her life, the brother and sister she helped raise became political enemies, leaving her alone. She wasn't allowed to practice
her religion in peace and lived under fear of death until she became queen. When she became queen she was married to a man who hated her, treated her like crap and tried to get with her sister.
So yeah, Mary did have a hard life, so please dont allow bias to consume you. I know about Mary because I did a research paper on her, if you want be to give you the sources you just let me know.
how was marys life harder than elizabeths at least mary knew her mother anne died when elizabeth was three and then elizabeth had to live with everyone including her father calling her mother a whore and elizabeth a basterd, then she was sexually abused by her STEPFATHER and imprisend by her sister who was suppose to love her .
I listed the reasons in the above post and the reason mary imprisoned Elizabeth was because they were going to use Liz to kick Mary off the throne.
Not to mention Phillip, Mary's husband, was trying to get with Liz.
Liz dealt with alot, but mary had a terrible childhood and adulthood. Mary knew her mother which made losing her that much worse, then to have a stepmother who wanted you dead or sent away among other things. There is a reason mary became who she was in the end
Ok, first off, Thomas Seymour was not Liz's Stepfather, he was her Stepmother's husband, and had no assocation with the title 'Father' to Elizabeth. Also, Elizabeth may have flirted with Thomas too, while disputed and still inappropiate, the relationship between Elizabeth and Seymour and HER feelings toward it, is still quite a mystery.
Second, I think both M&E had hard childhoods & lifes, but Elizabeth's was hardship was much shorter than Mary's.
Mary was banished by her father and verbally abused by her father and Stepmother. Mary was also separated from her mother and not allowed to see her. Mary's mother was called Incestous, and Mary was called a bastard. Mary life was threatened constantly and even by her father.
And as Mary got older, life didn't get any easier, she had to practice her faith in secret, her father ruined or turned down her marriage prospects, and she was forced to renouce her mother's marriage and declare herself a bastard. During her Brother's reign she was publicly berated for her Catholic Faith and was, once again, forced to practice her faith in secret.
So in all honesty, Elizabeth had her struggles, but they were no where as numerous or as long as Mary's were.
well they both had hard childhoods. u r sounding like a selfish bitch. and besides mary was the rightful fucking princess. her mother came from fucking powerful monarchs and her father did too. how the hell would u feel in marys place if ur father disregarded u and ur mother for his own selfish ends and made u play servant to his new loved daughter. when u his child did nothing wrong. yeah just so u know the fact that u r siblings or any rellation has never matter in monarchies. study history
Mary was NOT servant to Elizabeth. Because Mary and Catherine were causing a threat to Henry's reign, Henry had Mary taken out of her own household and forced to live at Elizabeth's. But she was NOT a servant. And Mary did do something wrong with morals back then, she refused to follow her King, which was treason. And even then, Elizabeth's hardships outnumber, maybe not with Henry as Elizabeth actually agreed with him, but Elizabeth had a lot more hardships than Mary.
again someone acting quite bitchy. i just really would like to know how u would feel in her situation with ur mother basicly being shoved aside for his selfish means? and regardless of who had a "worse life" life and all the bull. 2 wrongs never make a right i'm done talking about this now
So Elizabeth's tense feelings knowing that her mother was beheaded by her father outnumber Mary's feelings for Catherine being shunned by Henry?? Catherine was not just shoved aside, she stubbornly refused a plethora of solutions to Henry's need for a male heir so Henry had her removed from court. Yes, it was a dickish thing to do, but Catherine and Mary were given much more chances than Anne and Elizabeth. And in the future, please do not call me a bitch for expressing my beliefs.
ok again i am in no way condoning that either girl had the worse childhood as ppl like to put it. why the 2 sisters are even being pitted against one another is the real problem. when everyone can clearly see that it is henry who is responsible for each of there circumstances. henry DID shove Catherine aside just so he could marry Anne when papal law refused him this right. and i believe u called Mary out on treason well what about henry's treason against the pope. henry killed anne not mary
You're not even making sense. It would be impossible for Henry to commit treason against the Pope. Treason is acting against your country/government, Henry broke from a religious group, not an actual government. More to the point, I admitted Henry shoved Catherine aside, but I pointed out it wasn't done lightly. COA was given much more choices than Anne. And I'm not really sure how to respond to your last sentence. I NEVER even hinted towards an idea of Henry killing Mary.
no i didn't hint toward henry killing mary. and what i am saying in the grand scheme of things is that people should really stop pitting the two sisters against one another. maybe elizabeth did have a more diffcult life mary or maybe it was the other way around. regardless the hardships of each person should not be made light of. elizabeth didn't deserve to lose her mother and mary didn't deserve the suffering that she went through either. think about it being a young girl who is so accustomed
to a certain way of life and faith and such. to suddenly have ur father basically dis own u and forbid u to have any contact with ur mother must have been very heartbreaking. also u said that mary was commiting treason by not obeying her kung but at the same time u have to realize how hard it would be for her to just change her religion. all her life she has been raised and told to believe the ways of the catholic faith. also she probably felt helpless for her mother and wanted to show her some
sort of loyality. her situation was like that if any child stuck in the middle of two feuding parents. i feel like too many people just assume that bc elizabeth lost her mother her life was automatically worse. but mary also suffered bc of anne boleyn who was the other woman. she wasn't even allowed to see her mother and her father stripped her of her titles. elizabeth to also suffered in the same regard. when u ask the question of whether marys pain of having her mother sent away out numbers
I'm not really sure if you understood my thesis. My thesis was that overall Elizabeth had the harder life, but this was not attributed towards Henry's actions beyond the traumatizing knowledge of Anne Boleyn. Mary's life was easier, though all of her hardships were committed by her father, making them much more traumatizing than a normal hardship. I wouldn't say they were evened out as Mary had it slightly better, but it was definitely hard for Mary being against her father.
elizabeths well of course it doesn't. but what exactly is your point. everyone in this world has lost someone. so does that give every single one of us to go walking about telling someone our lose is greater due to such and such circumstances. no it doesn't bc there is always going to be someone out there who has it worse. but in the end the effects that individual suffering has on a person as a whole are much the same.
finally we should really be focusing our anger on henry he is the cause of
you have a nasty, filthy attitude & mouth......you need to shut up being a brat & study up on basic communication skills when someone has different viewpoints little one. mary was just rabid mentally incompetent to be queen. Elizabeth was Queen!
and all i am saying is that ppl are way too hard on mary! everyone says mary was horrid and cruel bc she put many protestants to death. however this is not fair bc elizabeth put many catholics to death. i just saying that ppl r really bias toward one person
Mary wasn't mentally incompetent, she was just severely scarred over her father and Anne Boleyn. As would anyone else be. Elizabeth also put to death many innocent people, most notably Mary Stuart.
@kathCT Lol Mary Stuart tried to assassinate Elizabeth twice ...no she is definitely was not innocent...she was a sad person but she made some bad choices like killing her second husband by blowing him up into bits because she wanted to be with her lover for example
The two german men remind me of "Hans and Franz" on SNL.

you have a nasty, filthy attitude & mouth......you need to shut up being a brat & study up on basic communication skills when someone has different viewpoints little one. mary was just rabid mentally incompetent to be queen.

Elizabeth also put to death many innocent people, most notably Mary Stuart.

bloody mary WAS incompetent-2 phantom pregnancies...not a clue how to listen to advisors, wiser than her, burning hatred toward her sister ,,,,,on & on.
almost destroyed england-too busy burning protestants & saying hail marys instead of running the kingdom & being the Queen of england.
elizabeth brought england together & had those that would kill her executed, after giving them many chances to live-prime example-mary stuart.
mary stuart was not innocent. learn some real history ...next.

@kathCT Lol Mary Stuart tried to assassinate Elizabeth twice ...no she is definitely was not innocent...she was a sad person but she made some bad choices like killing her second husband by blowing him up into bits because she wanted to be with her lover for example

Your over-reacting. She hardly complains in the show and she has plenty to complain about even if she did.
