HELP!! Visiting the Academy next week, but i dont know wat to wear, the information says bussiness casual but do you think nice jeans and an airforce sweatshirt would be fine. Dont wanna go there looking to dressed up
@krusecraze I am doing what I can to stand out too. I participate in the EAA young eagles, am interested in joining the civil air patrol, am a star scout in boy scouts, a black belt in TaeKwon-Do, and high honors. I'd like to study physics in high school (mostly quantum). I too want to do my country proud.
@krusecraze perhaps we will see each other their... My plan is to attend air-force academy, and then, gain a pilots license (civilian), then enter the air force as a pilot. I want to fly F-16s or F-22. If that doesn't work, I'm going to do army warrant flight officer training for helicopters.
@DynaDuctINC i might see you there too im planning on going into the airforce as an officer and i want to go to the airforce academy and do drill team if they have one
Attending Airforce Academy is certainly a big dream of mine. Now that I'm in 8th grade I am going to start planning what I should do to stand out from all other applicants of the academy. I am doing research, getting good grades, about to join sports, and making some decisions. I hope one day that I will hear "You've been accepted to Airforce Academy." It's a big dream I definitely want to reach. Please wish me best of luck! America deserves brave soldiers. I want to be one of those soldiers.
@krusecraze hey man its my dream to and good luck to you and that one day we will see each other at the academy and as long as your not from WI good luck..lol
@krusecraze Getting straight A's and playing a varsity sport won't get you in, theres another 13000 people each year who think they're more than qualified applicants.

@Sharod101 hey i'm a sophomore in h.s and could u send the info also, and a quick question how r u a cadet when ur in h.s, if u could get back with me that would be greatly helpful thanks
All i know is that i got into the USAFA!! F yes son :D. looking forward to BCT, lol i think there gonna break me there cus ima be laughing the whole time were running drills ^,^ i dont think our senior there will appreciate that, but i already met a lot of them during orientation and they said it wasnt gonna be hard if we all just followed orders and did our best. I like how everyone at USAFA is so friendly, hope it stays like that even after they finish pretending to be jerks, cus there not :D
I wish I knew about wanting to join the air force when I was in middle school / early high school. Now it is too late, but I will support you folks from the sidelines.
Im in 8th grade. This is the only college I want to go to. I am going to study my self to death, be in tons of extra curriculars, class president, sports, clubs, vollunteer and hope that i gain an appointment to the academy.
@Sharod101 I wouldnt say for years of hell. USAFA is like a giant kick in the balls for one year. West Point and Annapolis are 4 small taps to the balls, one for every year. Id rather have the first.
i wish i knew i wanted to join the AF while i wuz in high school, but i had my mind focused on another career, but im still goin to join!!! wish i could be in the academy, but you can never plan out your life. im still going to join the AF!! lol

I'm in the process of applying to the AFA but selection is so rigorous, I'm not sure if I'll make it. Do I have just as good of a chance at becoming a pilot by going to UF ROTC as I do by attending the Academy?
well, the air force academy has the most amount of pilot slots compared to universities. my dad went to the air force academy and he urges me to get ALL A's, due to the fact that service academies are tougher to get into. hope this helps.
I'm a junior so I'm busting my ass to get a high GPA and good physique but I'm still not sure a year is enough time. What grade are you in bro?By the way, cool user id!
you'll have a better shot if you go to afa, but you won't have as much time to fly on your own, which is 1000 times more valuable when you get to upt.
that's not true. cadets get to participate in many different airmanship programs where flying is run via a military unit and is a military duty. some of it actually mimics UPT. and it is fully funded. this can only be the best prep for UPT
My year it wasn't funded, and they removed IFT and replaced it with AFS...4 weeks of flying in the summer about 22 hours in the air. Not the best prep for UPT.
there are way more airmanship programs than IFT and AFS such as soaring, the flying team, powered flight program, jump, UAS, and it's about 1/4 the cost to pursue your PPL at the academy than it is in the civilian world. more importantly though, if you get to the academy and want a pilot slot the overwhelming chances are that you will get one.
i agree that if you go to the academy you will have a better chance of getting a pilot slot; however, if a person plans on doing well in UPT knowing how to fly before showing up is better. IFT isn't conducted there anymore; which was the best program because it got you close to a PPL, they replaced it with AFS which is much weaker. The jump program your not flying, u need a PPL to join the flying team, the powered flt program IS AFS. But hey, it is what it is right?
again, the aero club here enables cadets to earn their ppl in 1/4 the cost otherwise. and some would argue that learning how to manage your time well in the midst of unbelievable course loads/military duties, learning how to perform well under extremely stressful situations, and become acclimated to the military environment serves you better than any amount in an airplane ever could. the USAF Academy does these things like no other commissioning source. hands down.
and again when i was there they only had enough money/planes for those people who ALREADY had PPL. So knowing that it comes and goes, there is no guarantee that anyone can use it. The stress of upt is not necessarily the time management, its just learning how to fly PLUS learning how to fly for the AF. So if you already know how to do one, you're half way there. Why go through all the stress of afa? Doing pointless parades and your "military" duties consist of sami's? yeah gets u ready for upt
i'm not talking so much about the sami's, but more of freshman year. going through freshman year enables you to recall information under rediculous amounts of stress. this skill is essential if you want to lead people, let alone fly a multi-million dollar aircraft.
i have talked to air force officers from both USAFA and ROTC...the USAFA officers recall having a much easier time than their ROTC counterparts during pilot training due to the rigors only USAFA can offer. their opinion, not mine.
@flyboy047: funny you say that. 99% of officers i have met can't make a decision period. all are "yes men" that can't form their own opinion. now this doesnt go for all officers, but for the most part, i've lost all respect. i'm enlisted af by the way.
well i born in usa, but lived here in mexico, i wanna be an air force pilot, i kno lot of stuff bout physics and math i love em, well were can i start : 3
Congrats on that!! I am enlisting here shortly but I want to become an officer, is there anyway to be an enlisted member then go to the academy and become an officer? Or am I stuck at being an NCO?
you can definitely still become an officer. i have a lot of good buddies who were prior enlisted. its a different method of selection is my understanding and you are likely going to go to the prep school, but as long as you meat the requirements just like everyone else that applies you can make it in if you work hard. there is always officer training school (OTS) and ROTC as well. although if you want to be a pilot, the academy still gives you the best chance.
Hey man, don't worry. Those who will be training you did it so you can too. Basic is a game: give it all you got and don't let them get to you. The battle is already over if you've lost in your mind. I'll leave you with a quote from one of my basic cadre: "you will break physically, but you cannot let yourself break mentally..."
Hey USAFA grads, do they still ask freshman who are lazy if they are "takin a blow?" Do they still say "get up for it" to motivate cadets for crappy exercises? I wonder if that has been eliminated? Mike E USAFA Grad c/o 1995. good luck kids...get ready to get your heart broken.
I'm no grad, but I am a cadet. Yes they still say "get up for it" and I haven't heard anyone say "takin' a blow" but I might just not be around those cadets who do. The Academy is what you make it and I chose to kill my cynicism and make it the best it can be...
I've already been accepted lagnobob. I report to the academy on June 25 for inprocessing and the start of Basic Cadet Training. Are you confusing a nomination with an appointment?
If I want to become a commercial pilot in the future, through this Academy woul it be easier? or cheaper? and if not what would you guys recommend me. Thanks
Both. The only thing is you have a min of a 5 year commitment after you graduate and then after UPT you have a couple more years added on, but there are some transports that are exactly like commercial planes that you can fly. Also graduating from USAFA looks pretty good on a resume, so any job that you apply for would be easier to get. the flip side is its not exactly free. You will pay for this education in blood, sweat and more blood. and its like having a 6 year education with the work load.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you don't need honors to get in. i was just an ordinary student in high school and they took me. they except pretty much everybody. you can never have to many men and women in the military. Even if you have glasses you will be able to fly with a lot of training. BUT if you have glasses or are born in another country you will not be able to fly the F/A-22 Raptor.
How is it that u don't need a lot of honors? i disagree with u completely on this. I'm an academy appointee for 2013- and honestly the competitio is fierce considering academy is one of the most prestigious uni's in the nation/world.
And "you can never have to many men and women in the miltiary" yeah thats called enlistment ranks.
Academy Officers are different story, it takes alot to become an officer, esp from the academy.
true but there are exceptions. i'm here at usafa and only had a 2.9 gpa in HS. BUT i was prior enlisted first which helped a lot. they take a lot of factors into ur acceptance. not just ur grades and hs stuff. they took into account that i was working 40+ hrs a week while still in hs. that sort of stuff helps too
keep that attitude, and you're gonna screw yourself over as a leader. the Enlisted ranks of the Air Force are JUST as important as the Officers. Don't EVER talk about them in a derogatory way. Good luck in 2013 though. We're waiting for you...
yeah im really dedicated to go, im in 8th grade and ive been keeping my grades up to get into honors in high school. i finally found a solid inspiration that i want to work towards and i hope i make it.
@TheSarge75 contact me through my page, i'm a cadet, not at the Service Academies, but i'll tell you everything and anything you need to know/do to get in.
i'm a junior in H.S. currently and i'm turning in my applications later this year.
@TheSarge75 Well god bless you. I'm considering it as another college option, but am not sure... I mean a great education for free (financially) is a hell of a bargain. It's just the yelling and PT that's got me worried, lol. I'm a junior in high school and you seem like a better role model than myself. Keep it up and even the sky is under your limits.
I'm so dedicated to get here. I'm not one of those home-schooled, always been athletic prodigy that some claim the AFA expects. I'm currently at a 3.7, with Varsity Field Hockey, Indoor Track, and I made the switch to JV Softball last year (will be moved up to Varisty). I carried a 1.5 my freshmen year and I smoke; no sports. Ever since I planned to go here, I changed. My college counselor says I'm the most determined person he's ever met.
smoked** SMOKED** I do not smoke anymore. We were all young + stupid once...
But yeah, I've been applying to other colleges, as well as scholarships to afford for these other colleges, but I want this more than anything else in the world...
Be sure to get into community service activities that show leadership roles. The USAFA is the prooving ground for leaders, that is very much what they want to see in a prospective Cadet. Good luck!
good luck. Physical Fitness, test scores, extracurricular, and that's basically the first round. Then they take alittle over 1000 from the roughly 9000 who are just like you. I don't feel like trying to recall the statistic from when I applied but it's hard. I go to Michigan not the Academy (don't mention our football team please).
I went straight enlisted and have no complaints. Got paid to be trained as an Air Traffic Control, and set for the rest of my life, aswell as I get my college paid for... and will be attempting OTS. Also my wife is doing AFROTC.
roughneck the guy is just saying that no matter what you do ROTC OTS or the Academy your still gonna end up a 2LT...i'd rather attend the academy 2013!! however the main purpose is being and AF officer
While that may be true, there is a lot more to the Academy than that. It is an experience like no other, and don't expect it to be easy. That said, good luck in getting in, the application process is a challenge in itself...in case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm a USAFA cadet: class of 2012. The main advice I give you is be in shape, prepare to be yelled at a lot, and be readt to do a lot of memorizing.
It is college, probably one of the best ones in the world. It's also the 4th hardest college to get into in the world!!! Don't criticize my school. Best aeronautical school!!!
Here is some advice from a grad to all potential cadets viewing this video. The academy is not for everyone, it will probably suck all 4 years but remember the academy is a horrible place to be but one of the best places to be from.
I will be glad to answer any questions about the zoo just PM me.
Approx 10% of USAFA cadets were CAP cadets. CAP helps, but remember 2 things: 1 you must excel, seek to do the best possible in leadership positions, 2 they look at the whole person. CAP is just one thing to help.
I've heard that CAP does help you to prepare somewhat, but I just went to USAFA directly from high school with no military experience whatsoever, so it's no like it's necessary. However, I do think it is good to prepare...it makes basic training and everything else a lot easier.
My grades and ACT scores really did help me get in, it's true. However, I was involved in football, weightlifting, and both indoor and outdoor track, and I made states for 110m hurdles in track. Besides that, I was in band, chorus, art club, honor society, and the mathletes. I had to work my ass off to get in here so don't make it sound like I got in easy because of grades. Also, a word of advice to anyone wanting to come here: make sure you want a military life and you're doing it for yourself.
wow. i only did about maybe half of that list and I still got in. Class of 2012? Get your chin in smack, class of 09 here. But he's right, come here for yourself, not for your parents or something.
So maybe our experience isn't identical to yours...but this place is STILL something special for those of us who aren't cynical jerks. I am very proud of my Academy experience, and feel fortunate to have had some pretty incredible opportunities. Times change...so has the Academy - pretty much continuously since 1955. Get over yourself.
Why is everyone saying this. I mean when i go on they're website, i see ppl who were valedictorians in their high schools getting sent to the prep school...which makes me wonder if ill evn b accepted.
its all about your competition, if you are better than the rest of the people from your state, you will get in. The system sucks and the institution is full of flaws like that. After the time I've spent at USAFA I have completely lost faith in their system. Don't lose sleep over it, just stay involved in different programs and really make yourself look good on your paperwork.
The Academy is extremely challenging. The most important thing to know tis that keeping a good atitude through all of the bull will make it all easier. I can't wait to train(beat the classes of 2012,2013,and 2014. Don't quit.
I hope you guys realize how tough the competition is, and it gets even worst every year. By the time @krusecraze is a junior in high school perfect math and reading SAT scores will be a must. Since the government is downsizing the military, the academy will have to accept less applicants.

dont let something hard get in your way. want to fly....get in the academy. its your best bet. some advice from a new grad
GreenWonder09 2 years ago
Just make sure you do what you have to, lest you inherit the fate of most officers: working that coffee pot and answering phones!
Agent1W 2 years ago
Congrats on that!! I am enlisting here shortly but I want to become an officer, is there anyway to be an enlisted member then go to the academy and become an officer? Or am I stuck at being an NCO?
ALICECOOPERFANATIC 2 years ago
you can definitely still become an officer. i have a lot of good buddies who were prior enlisted. its a different method of selection is my understanding and you are likely going to go to the prep school, but as long as you meat the requirements just like everyone else that applies you can make it in if you work hard. there is always officer training school (OTS) and ROTC as well. although if you want to be a pilot, the academy still gives you the best chance.
GreenWonder09 2 years ago
i wanna fly but... i cant idk if my country has an airforce :s

that will be me come june 25th. and i have to say that i'm pretty damn scared
thepottergeneration 2 years ago
Hey man, don't worry. Those who will be training you did it so you can too. Basic is a game: give it all you got and don't let them get to you. The battle is already over if you've lost in your mind. I'll leave you with a quote from one of my basic cadre: "you will break physically, but you cannot let yourself break mentally..."
Spangladesh44 2 years ago
Hey USAFA grads, do they still ask freshman who are lazy if they are "takin a blow?" Do they still say "get up for it" to motivate cadets for crappy exercises? I wonder if that has been eliminated? Mike E USAFA Grad c/o 1995. good luck kids...get ready to get your heart broken.
brownhog72 2 years ago
I'm no grad, but I am a cadet. Yes they still say "get up for it" and I haven't heard anyone say "takin' a blow" but I might just not be around those cadets who do. The Academy is what you make it and I chose to kill my cynicism and make it the best it can be...

If I want to become a commercial pilot in the future, through this Academy woul it be easier? or cheaper? and if not what would you guys recommend me. Thanks
zaranib 3 years ago
You will pay for this education in blood, sweat and more blood. and its like having a 6 year education with the work load.

you don't need honors to get in. i was just an ordinary student in high school and they took me. they except pretty much everybody. you can never have to many men and women in the military. Even if you have glasses you will be able to fly with a lot of training. BUT if you have glasses or are born in another country you will not be able to fly the F/A-22 Raptor.
ihavtugo 3 years ago
How is it that u don't need a lot of honors? i disagree with u completely on this. I'm an academy appointee for 2013- and honestly the competitio is fierce considering academy is one of the most prestigious uni's in the nation/world.
And "you can never have to many men and women in the miltiary" yeah thats called enlistment ranks.
Academy Officers are different story, it takes alot to become an officer, esp from the academy.
nirvanicbeauty 3 years ago
true but there are exceptions. i'm here at usafa and only had a 2.9 gpa in HS. BUT i was prior enlisted first which helped a lot. they take a lot of factors into ur acceptance. not just ur grades and hs stuff. they took into account that i was working 40+ hrs a week while still in hs. that sort of stuff helps too
phillipmills 3 years ago
Yeah i see. I understand guess ur lucky! I worked my ass off cuz i really wanted to be among the top and not have to worry...
i heard for my class of 2013 they are cutting 300 less people this year so the competition is more fierce...
nirvanicbeauty 3 years ago
keep that attitude, and you're gonna screw yourself over as a leader. the Enlisted ranks of the Air Force are JUST as important as the Officers. Don't EVER talk about them in a derogatory way. Good luck in 2013 though. We're waiting for you...
dyce189 2 years ago
not competitive my ass. i didnt get in. you obviously have no idea what youre talking about

not competitive??? About 9200 apply, only around 1200 are appointed. That's a 13% acceptance rate.

My college counselor says I'm the most determined person he's ever met.
xxmissxlgxx 3 years ago 2
smoked** SMOKED** I do not smoke anymore. We were all young + stupid once...
But yeah, I've been applying to other colleges, as well as scholarships to afford for these other colleges, but I want this more than anything else in the world...
xxmissxlgxx 3 years ago
Be sure to get into community service activities that show leadership roles. The USAFA is the prooving ground for leaders, that is very much what they want to see in a prospective Cadet. Good luck!
uptownkris 3 years ago
I know that you can learn to fly at the Academy, but is it possible to actually obtain a pilot's liscense as a cadet?
If you know, please answer me. Thank you.
Republikenny 3 years ago
i think you train for it while your there and build up your hours and then when you grad. you get it.
sedargo77 3 years ago
good luck. Physical Fitness, test scores, extracurricular, and that's basically the first round. Then they take alittle over 1000 from the roughly 9000 who are just like you. I don't feel like trying to recall the statistic from when I applied but it's hard. I go to Michigan not the Academy (don't mention our football team please).

actually, extracurriculars matter a lot. especially leadership roles in school clubs. don't just blow off stuff like that.

I went straight enlisted and have no complaints. Got paid to be trained as an Air Traffic Control, and set for the rest of my life, aswell as I get my college paid for... and will be attempting OTS. Also my wife is doing AFROTC.

yeah perfect GPA but no i cant do 5 pushups
bourn4theAF 3 years ago
roughneck the guy is just saying that no matter what you do ROTC OTS or the Academy your still gonna end up a 2LT...i'd rather attend the academy 2013!! however the main purpose is being and AF officer
bourn4theAF 3 years ago
While that may be true, there is a lot more to the Academy than that. It is an experience like no other, and don't expect it to be easy. That said, good luck in getting in, the application process is a challenge in itself...in case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm a USAFA cadet: class of 2012. The main advice I give you is be in shape, prepare to be yelled at a lot, and be readt to do a lot of memorizing.
2012 "Never falter, never fail!"

Here is some advice from a grad to all potential cadets viewing this video. The academy is not for everyone, it will probably suck all 4 years but remember the academy is a horrible place to be but one of the best places to be from.
I will be glad to answer any questions about the zoo just PM me.

How much of a difference does joining civil air patrol make?
pensvsflyers 3 years ago
Approx 10% of USAFA cadets were CAP cadets. CAP helps, but remember 2 things: 1 you must excel, seek to do the best possible in leadership positions, 2 they look at the whole person. CAP is just one thing to help.
tokyomitsubishi 3 years ago
Im in CAP,its a pretty good program. You should join. idk how much it helps but im hoping it'll help me.
christiandukie 3 years ago
I've heard that CAP does help you to prepare somewhat, but I just went to USAFA directly from high school with no military experience whatsoever, so it's no like it's necessary. However, I do think it is good to prepare...it makes basic training and everything else a lot easier.
Spangladesh44 3 years ago
...and you prolly had like a 4.0, so it seems like for smart ppl, u dont need sports or things like CAP.
christiandukie 3 years ago
My grades and ACT scores really did help me get in, it's true. However, I was involved in football, weightlifting, and both indoor and outdoor track, and I made states for 110m hurdles in track. Besides that, I was in band, chorus, art club, honor society, and the mathletes. I had to work my ass off to get in here so don't make it sound like I got in easy because of grades. Also, a word of advice to anyone wanting to come here: make sure you want a military life and you're doing it for yourself.
Spangladesh44 3 years ago
wow. i only did about maybe half of that list and I still got in. Class of 2012? Get your chin in smack, class of 09 here. But he's right, come here for yourself, not for your parents or something.

Yeah, I'm in 2012.

They've ruined that place. It used to be something special.
give1731 3 years ago
So maybe our experience isn't identical to yours...but this place is STILL something special for those of us who aren't cynical jerks. I am very proud of my Academy experience, and feel fortunate to have had some pretty incredible opportunities. Times change...so has the Academy - pretty much continuously since 1955. Get over yourself.
tzoom1 3 years ago
PS that last one was intended for give1731
tzoom1 3 years ago
They've turned that place into a joke. It's not hard, don't kid yourself.
give1731 3 years ago
give1731 what are you talking about? I've gone to civilian college and the zoo and I can tell you straight up that its harder at USAFA.
roughneck278 3 years ago
Why is everyone saying this. I mean when i go on they're website, i see ppl who were valedictorians in their high schools getting sent to the prep school...which makes me wonder if ill evn b accepted.
christiandukie 3 years ago 3
its all about your competition, if you are better than the rest of the people from your state, you will get in. The system sucks and the institution is full of flaws like that. After the time I've spent at USAFA I have completely lost faith in their system. Don't lose sleep over it, just stay involved in different programs and really make yourself look good on your paperwork.
roughneck278 3 years ago 3
what does it matter how hard it is? They are still signing up to give the lives in defence of the US..... people like you make me sick.
