Well your way is ok........or like me you can do this mission at level ten and just fire the Cain at them as soon as you see them.
Even at level ten on insanity the cain will One shot kill them all together before they have a chance to move apart thus meaning you have saved all 20 crates.
You can actually use the missle launcher and lure the mechs over to you, one by one without any crates destroyed.
Just stay at your initial landing point and fire a single missile. The amazing missile will automatically hone in on a mech without needing line-of-sight thus you will not activate the "crate-destroying" script. Once a missle hits, the mech will start moving towards you and you can take them down 1 by 1. Use the shuttle as cover if needed.
@JoelWTFJOEL If you've got the M-920 Cain heavy weapon, I'd recommend firing that sucker when the two big mechs pass by each other early on and you'll take a huge chunk out of them from the get go. I got it done with I believe 18 crates, could've been 17. Pretty sure 18 crates though. In case you care maybe a lil bit. :)
Going through insanity on xbox right now and after I kill the first one and engage the second, the third starts attacking me no matter how far apart they are. Happens every time, so the take em on one at a time doesn't work there.
@tauron123 That's probably because the one that is shooting at you has already finished its share of the crates. The mech would always go to shoot the crates first, but once they have destroyed all the crates that have been assigned to them they'd start shooting Shepard, no matter whether there's another mech currently shooting him.
Enemies scale with you, so as long as you're low level ( level 10 if playing on insanity, I believe) you can just give them one shot with the Cain and it makes for a real short mission.
Why does insanity on pc look so f*cking easy? seriously, im playing me2 on insanity now, and a rocket to a mecs face will drop its armor by a couple mili-metres or 5% litrally
another way is to use the missle launcher at the start, fire 1 round and it will cause 1 mech to advance towards you. If you don't go down the hill ate the beginning then you will save ALL crates.
@GreasemonkeyCGI I saved all 20 crates one time. You have to get all the heavy weapon upgrades, and the Ordinance Packs leg armor (+10% heavy weapon ammo) to get 200 ammo for the M-920 Cain. At the very beginning, two of the mechs are close enough to get caught in the blast area. Fire the Cain as you're moving down the hill and you can take them both out immediately with a two shots. Snag the third mech before it starts attacking the crates. Requires some luck with your aim.
I managed to nuke all 3 to death right away on insane - have mirandas squad damage bonus, start charging up the shot before even running around the corner, and time it to fire right when all 3 of them just come into line of fire - can be lethal to them. And if not, a few stray shots here and there and you have 20 saved crates.
I would rather use Garrus instead of zaeed. he has concussive and overload.... so put on inferno ammo, Garrus and Miranda overload, you pound the armor, let garrus do a concussive, and go for the headshots at long range.
X-76d Assault Rifle (Fully Auto) My Friend Thats What u need. It's Extremely Powerful, not that Accuarate but tapping trigger helps greatly. Combined with warp ammo Makes It UNFUKIN" STOPPABLE!!!
Easiest way to do this on insanity is to do Zaeed's loyalty mission and choose to save the workers, which gives you heavy weapon ammo, you can still gain loyalty if you imported ME1 paragon save, and have 2 class passive skill for +40% paragon. Then you can do research for Cain, and due to some scaling according to level, Cain still one shots heavy mechs if you are level 10 or under.
I did it on Insanity with Miranda and Mordin, and was able to save 8. Miranda died too (after 1st mech down), and I didn't have a med-gel to bring her back. Managed to take down the other 2 with just Shepard and Mordin, though... Heavy Incinerate is very nice.
I would do it again, but I'm already too far past it.
I dont know if this works on insanity, but when I tried this the first time at normal I saved all twenty crates by firing my nukelauncher once. When the fire and dust had settled I was the last man standing :)
This mission gave me a spot of trouble because I tried it at a low level, but I'm going to try again after watching this video and now that I'm also a level 14 adept like you.
I think I generally make the mistake of hitting this mission too early. Well before my squadmates have gotten their tier 4 abilities. Why do you use the grenade launcher? I have gotten in the rythm of using a missile launcher so I can pepper the second (far left) mech with 10 - 12 missles from an extreme distance before it can engage me.
Just curious about your reasoning, as I haven't done it on insanity yet.
I'm going to try this as an infiltrator (lvl 30) with miranda and garrus. I figure instead of warp I'll have heavy incinerate for armor. I'm specced for squad disruptor ammo on my Shep so it should work out just fine.

It took me 10-15 tries (on insanity), but somehow I managed to save 12 crates in the end.

I haven't tried it on insanity yet, but on hardcore the nuke launcher only takes out all the mechs shields so you still have to gun them all down.
Still good for saving 14+ crates, still deciding what class to take on my insanity run.
