@lukethekanefan First thing i would check would be the ideal, but no doubt thats already been done. Could be the pilot jet it's clogged up which is preventing the engine getting fuel, so what i would do is take it off and totally clean the carb. Another cause could be a bad crank seal on the stator side which can allow air into the crank throughing off the mixture which happened to my 100 you will find that tuning is near impossible when this happens. Could be other things aswell
@kyconic44 had the carb off cleaned totally float checked jets checked evrything is perfect condition and its a mini moto so its got no stator i think but thanks for the response it my friends bike so next time im round his i will check the seals and stuff
@kyconic44 ohh yea and the spark plug is chesnut brown exactly like urs in the vid wich is weird considering it smokes like heck wen it runs on full throttle and wont even idle or run on aneything but full revs and then it wont even run for long on full
@lukethekanefan Try riching the mixture by 1/4 to half a turn just to see if it makes a difference because it sounds like fuel starvation to me. Iginition timing could also cause an engine to do this if it's out.Hard to say what it could be without hearing it lol
@kyconic44 i know very hard to say i myself am in my 1st year of a mechanics course ill try that see if it makes a diffrence we tried riching and leaning it and it refused to start were gunna sell it too much trublle
on a 4 stroke they say salmon pink, on a 2 stroke that burns oil, it must be darker generally, also on diska valves or piston port engines at low rpm u get blowback so air passes carb twice, being 2x as rich!
more so on racing engines.
we used to change the plug every 10 minutes on the karts or every race, u know the types with no protruding cathode?
cost about £25 each back in 1990!
if u use an oil with octane improver and fully synthetic u may get close to pink?
@tnerual888 yes you do lol, if you want to really fine tune them at the top end a good trick is to open up your bike to full throttle and when you get to the power band switch the engine off and pull the clutch in, stop take the plug out and see how its funning when on full pelt and adjust the mistures from there thats ^^
lo there kyconic44 I have a Honda CL400 at the mo, got it from Japan, grey import, not many in the U.K.
a nice guy from Japan got me a workshop manual for it, it looks a bit like the old british bikes, it has a single 397cc double ohc motor, does about 85 but will go faster, I don't because the motor sounds a little busy and I can't be parted with me con rod! good fun though, if you give me your e-mail I'll send you some photos of some of the other old bikes I've had down the years, thanks.
well maybe the plugs are better now, i got a pic of mine in Cornwall 1972, i could send you a pic if u want, after i sorted the plug prob it was a nice little bike, got a usefull 50 in 3rd and an indicated 70 in 4th.
@thewatchslot yeah if you have any pics of a A100 i wouldn't mind having it just to add to my gallery of bikes i have going on ^^ but yeah they are nippy just been to a rally on mine, went up to hartside with a few small bike including fizzies and small rd's and i was giving them a run for there money.
i had one of these back in 1972, it burnt out plugs every 500 mile just like a road test said in motorcycle sport mag , you got a nice little machine there i havn't seen one in such good nick, well done mate....
@thewatchslot Thanks man, i have tried my best to bring it to this standard and now i have got around to polishing the engine so it's even better looking now, one thing i can say though i have done 1200 miles since i got it and i still use the same plug i put in at the start but every engines different lol
Hi kyle, thanks for the vid, it been really helpful. Would you happen to know which drainage plug is the oil sump? We're currently trying to service a 1983 A100 special and I thought you might know what plug to drain, I think we may have drained the gear box by accident, are there two drainage points under the chassis? Thanks for your help! :)
Well there is one drain plug that's under the engine which points forward if i recall it's the only big bolt under the engine, you then have a screw in the engine casing just forward of the kick start, this is the oil level screw so when you are refilling the gearbox you would take this screw out and when the oil starts to drip out of it you have the right oil level and then put it back in, hence why you don't have a dip stick. I hope thats of some help to you ^^
@kyconic44, Thank you I'll let my dad know... He must have taken the right plug out, but the oil was very dirty, almost black. The bike has been sitting in our back shed since '93 though, and would need a very good service before we can use it again! Thanks for your help, I will let you know how we go :)
No problem ^^ If it's black thats contaminates from the combustion i would say whihc would mean the crank seals have gone in the crankcase, because the oil in the gearbox only lubes the gears, nothing in the crankcase thats the 2 strokes job. Mine was sitting for 25 years before i got it and the oil was as clean as the day it was put in, unless someone has filled it up with old engine oil which i know some people do for some reason hopefully that will be the case ^^
Will be sending my IT400 yamaha and RMX 250 Suzuki, FedEx, cod, for you to tune, from the states. Feel free to ride em around when your done ;) lol

wat do u do to tune a 2 stroke engine that wont tick over that only runs on full revs and cuts out wen the throttle is let off

you should only check this after a good top speed run, when the engine is hot!
tnerual888 1 year ago
@tnerual888 Yeah well that goes without saying because the engine will always run leaner when hot.
kyconic44 1 year ago
@kyconic44 so, usually, becoz of that, you must fine tune when engine's hot ;)
