My best friend's girlfriend made him and herself leave the theater after 10 minutes into the film. 7 months later when it came out on dvd, we ditched work, rented the dvd and watched it with some beers and herbal. Great times.
None of the trailers or promos do the actual film justice. I watched it for the Van Der Beek, and got a whole lot more out of it. That whole thing about never really knowing someone. You don't get that from an American Pie movie. This was much more deep than a "teen" movie. It's from the same author of American Psycho!
yea but the film isnt exactly a teen movie, the characters are 21 going on 22, the movie is pretty much a down ending. they're in their final year of college and it sucks lol.
is the book better than the movie? I enjoyed the movie and can understand why some don't but it's a humorous and sometimes true portrayal of what goes on in college.
This is my fourth time seeing this movie, each time I've watched it for different reasons, but mainly to figure out what it meant. At first I thought it was artistic, second I liked the portrayle of college, third I liked the sex. This was all before now, before I was 21. Now I just think, know, that it's an awful movie that has no real meaning. Maybe that's the point but I don't like waisting my time with movies with no meaning.
@mrlee192, Rules of Attraction is no B Movie. If you love film, you will find great direction, acting, and unique story telling elements. If you like movies, you'll find it entertaining and dark. This adaptation is spot on, however this trailer does not do the source material justice.
However i cant stand B-movies. And i am undecided on whether this is a B-movie. Is it a B-movie? Cause if its not....ill watch it. If it is, then im sure it will feature the usual shit acting that goes with it.
@Ryanbassist that was the point- the book starts and ends in the middle of a sentence (everyone always thinks there are pages missing but that's just how it was written) it's supposed to show that the story is continuous.
After just reading the book and finding out there was a movie made.. I don't know if I want to see this or not.. The book was good.. lol ..this looks lame.
@donutsmoker watch it - this trailer is lame - the movie is nothing like this. Im a big fan of Bret Easton Ellis as a writer and a massive fan of this very dark, very twisted movie version!
This trailer absolutely mischaracterizes the film. It looks like you're off to see a movie like Animal House when in reality the film is one of the most dark and depressing meditations on the nature of youthful amorality that you're likely to ever see.
@RRJackson what are you talking about? it's a dark comedy, that's all! I mean the book is and since the movie is even lighter on it's themes how can it be a "dark and depressing meditations on the nature of youthful amorality that you're likely to ever see"; sure it's cynic and sometimes depressing and dark, but overall this trailer captured perfectly what the movie/book is all about.
Yeah but Bret Easton Ellis uses irony a lot, and his work is littered with a glorious 80s soundtrack rather than an incidental score. I think this trailer would have been terrible with depressing music.
@PhoneHomeProduction Advertising isn't usually targeted at people who are already fans of the source material, though. I'll bet a lot of teenage couples went to see this movie expecting a whacky romp and wandered out of the theater a couple of hours later wondering what had just happened to them.
@RRJackson Regardless, I'm sure that Avery was just trying to do the movie exactly as Ellis would have wanted it. He was never the type of person who went out of his way to appeal to the media, anyway. And, sure, while the advertising campaign for it was risky, a lot of people including myself fell in love with what it truly was. It was this mask that drew me in, and the superb film-making that kept me wanting more.
@PhoneHomeProduction I think you're inferring a negative criticism of the movie where there is none. I just said that the trailer mischaracterizes the film. Which can work sometimes, but not in this case...at least not as an advertising campaign. Rules of Attraction grossed $6 million off a $4 million budget. And chances are the advertising budget was a couple of million. It turned out to be Avary's lowest-grossing movie other than Killing Zoe.
@PhoneHomeProduction Heh...yes, much like he overestimated how much he could drink and still drive safely. "The Masses" are your market when you make films. They're as clever as you make them. It's your job to know your semiotics and communicate the message using the symbology that works most effectively for your target. Or not.
@RRJackson Umm, I like the movie. But it's not even close to being that description. Movies like Kids, River's Edge, and Mean Creek jump to mind before this
how about you go fuck yourself I mean ur a geek who gives a shit about grammer on youtube. Your mad ignornant. All tht matters is that its a good movie so shut the fuck up and do something better in your life n stop wasting ur time on peoples comments ur not my english teacher ya kno.
that was kind of an awsome trailer....even though i still have absolutely no idea what the movie is about.
