Mae West was as hot as they come, but the fact is, it was Lillian Roth who really made that line famous "Come up and see me sometime" with her strip tease number in 'Take A Chance' in 1933. Both ladies were sizzling, and tragically born long before my time ...
This scene is historic for being one of the first to make into a film referencing a direct invitation for sex, defying the censorship of the Production Code Administration (PCA).
her book MAE WEST SHE ALWAYS KNEW HOW is a fantastic book and its writen in a style that makes you feel like shes talking to you and taking you back into hollywood through the ages. she was ahead of her time, she really was.
Love that langourous drawl! "I've met your kind be-fo-ah!" LOL And giving him an unmistakable look with it. Go, Mae! 75 years later, she's still the hottest woman ever on film!
Yeap! The line by Mae West was: "Come up sometime, and see me". They switched the lines with "Come up and see me sometime". A song by Lilian Roth, while doing a mini striptease, in another movie. By the way West is always funny and hottie.
That was the birth of the immortal "Come up and see me sometime line" which was misquoted so often Miss West adopted it and wound up using it somewhere in every one of her subsequent classic films.
"You can be had" was from the stage version of this film, "Diamond Lil," and one of the lines the Hayes Office wanted deleted from the final print, but somehow it survived, much to our eternal pleasure!
Her dialog drove the censors "nuts" for years. But, she never said anything "dirty" - just suggestive........I met her thru a friend in Hollywood 30+ years ago...She owned lots of property in Hollywood and her own apartment house and lived in the Pent House of the bldg. Great "Gal".....
Mae West was a clean living woman. No coke up that nose. What she did and when she did it is really something. Loved the twinkle in her eyes when she was near a man and they usually twinkled back, Ha!
I mention West in The Celebrity Song.

Mae, was so ahead of her time, even censors had to be created because of her dialogue, talk about freedom of speech. She was an original.
