@Pmuree86 I have a few from Rita on my page that was sent to me from a friend who recorded coverage...I didn't get a chance to record any coverage of Rita because I was still without power from Katrina.
So no thunderstorm? I know why if you're like "WTF I was expecting thunderstorm conditions!". Hurricanes, unlike regular thunderstorms, have horizontal winds, preventing the water and ice from rubbing against each other. Some people say hurricane winds are strong enough to literally blow the lightning sideways, well that's their opinion. By the way, I wasn't in Hurricane Gustav when it happened. I was in southeastern Florida, but I heard the tropical update about it.
I just noticed that on the radar, the precipitation clouds were forming around in a cycle, forming a tornado or something. I don't really know because a tornado never hit in my area.
I think think the winds were slightly higher . In fact I know the winds were higher... Much higher. We were getting wind readings from the Bank Building's parking deck over 90mph at times... Got some good video of it too!
Yeah. We noticed the damage got less severe as we drove inland. Still, it was a shock to see cat 2 wind gusts 100+ miles from the center. Good job with the recordings! I've seen most of them from George-Ike... It's always good to reflect back on past storms.... Lots of memories for any weather nerd.
No. I was at school in Mobile during Katrina. Katrina was my 1st hurricane and ironically it hit the 2nd week of my first year as a Meteorology Major. It had to be a sign!!!
That and the entire state of Louisiana going dark for 24 hours, in south Louisiana much worse...I lost power for 13 days, but I did get all my school work done before power was restored :)

Yea I agree...these readings were taken farther inland at the airport about 10-15 min north of the Hancock Bank Building parking deck.
