VFR400 NC30 is a true legend. Bulletproof engine, great build quality, the chain-driven cams, and that engine note.
After this you go 750 race rep or you sell and buy a car.
@sexualastronaut Amen. That's exactly how I feel about this bike. Just one thing...the cams are gear-driven, not chain, which gives you this wonderful turbine-like whine. Cheers!
@dhowser2008 Yes it would for a few seconds, and after that it would be quite boring....you would not see anything else. If I made a video today I would use two camera's. But....this video was shot in 2003 and the spy-cams were very expensive back then. Eoday I have 3 camera's but no NC30 anymore.
Every stock (deristricted) NC30 will hit 210 km/h or 130 mph. At that speed they do not reach the 14.500 rpm redline. If yours is doing 15k rpm @210 km/h it must be geared shorter or your speedo is wrong.
My NC30 was slightly tuned, making it hit the rev limiter in 6th (somethinga stock NC30 will never ever do..
@PHAJH yep your right, mines slightly tunes and i have a speedo healer and mine hits about 13800 rpm in 6th full wack at about 131 mph top end and its stock. even going down hills etc the bike don't go any faster coz its at its maximum, its just feels like the bike is lurching back if thats the right wayto describe it? i dunno, it just feels like its pulling back tho :)
I've finaly deristricted my VFR 400 NC30 a week ago (from 25kw, 34bhp), I even derestricted the speedometer. I went for a top speed run and it did about 210 kmh. It's from 1989 and it has run 70.000km!
awesome....i fkn loved my vfr.had so much fun on it unil i tried to split a car down the middle with it.great handler, great sound, great speed, great handling, great for building points on a licence and experiencing walking with crutches for a few months.
@ThePppppanda I was just kidding. R6 is awesome but just not the bike for me. I really loved the looks and sound of this V4. I ride an XRV750R Africa Twin now :-)
No, the Jap spec bikes are limited to 180 km/h (110 mph).
After the restriction is removed (it is found in the speedo) the stock ones will do 125 to 130 mph, the last extra bit up to 135 mph comes from tuning the airfilter/carbs and exhaust.
Quicker? I don't know. The stock bikes should be equal performance wise. In Supersports 400 racing the ZXR has always been the faster bike, that is true. I find the VFR more stable in fast cornering. I did ride a ZXR400 but I just do not like the handling and engine. The V4 feels much stronger and flexible, even though it isn't really....The sound and looks of a VFR are much better in my opinion. But then - I am biased LOL
Oooooh I had one of them years ago (well still own it but overseas) and it revs so lovely and the torque between 6-10K rpm is just lovely, the sounds transforms from lazy to willing and lively and the handling is unique.... I've owned 06 ZX6R's , 10R's etc, but nothing compares to the NC30. Love for life! Thanks for the vid.
It does. The NC-30 has the same 360 degree ("big bang") crank configuration as the RC-30, making it sound like a big parallel twin. Most of the other Honda V4's have different configurations, making them sound a lot less agressive....
Do a Google search on "RC30 crank configuration" to get the picture.
I had no idea 400s were that fast. i got my 88 gsx-r up to 220 the other day (tacho reading) @ 13,000 rpm (it pulls 6000 at 100kmh, with 20kmh every 1000rpm after that) but it got stolen on wednesday night. :(
Top speed is quite high for a 400, thanks to the aerodynamics and very narrow V4 engine. On straight line acceleration your Gixxer will outrun it without the slightest effort though. Just watch your mirrors in the braking area, mid-corner and exit of the corner. That's where an NC30 is strongest.
fuck yes this bike is nice probly the only honda id ever own they r best lookin learner legal bike in aus they go hard n they sound like a motogp bike
sweet, im looking up these bad boys as im hoping to get one, lost my gsx750 f due to not having a job and now im employed again i want one of these, mainly for the sound but cheaper insurance will be a perk!
Nice vid, thank you for the upload. My mate still owns an RVF400 (same thing really), I hit the top speed at 180 when the speed limiter held it back. The limiter is in the speedo so we disconnected it, put it next to a FZ6-S2 and ran a top speed run. The Yamaha's indicated speed was 230km/h when the Honda ran out of puff. Not bad at all. The bike is still fast enough to entertain most riders. Love the sound they make.
For a 400 it is quite roomy. 6'4 might not be very comfy though. Your knees will be bent just a touch to much. Better look for a bigger bike.....I'm sorry :-)
im thinking of getting a 600 but insurance wise i dont know if i can afford it, so do you recommend a bike like this? i just dont want it to be slow so is this bike rapid, has the speed when you need it etc?
You have seen the vid....a NC30 is not nearly as fast as any of the 600s in a straight line. It is very good around corners and on the brakes but that's about is. As a result it is only fast on very very twisty roads ridden by someone who is good at cornering. Any straight will see you blown into the woods. My guess is...you will be disappointed if you are looking for absolute speed.
ah ok thx for the reply. when i said to my dad about a 600 he asked if im serious lol (im 23) which put doubt in my mind maybe it is too powerful but,,, they dont do brand new 400cc bikes like this one any more which is a shame (as i would have thought there is a market for it) and if there is a 400, it is probably poop compared. ikm not sure what to do, the 00s are v. expensive on insurnace as well so i need to weigh it up i guess
Yes that's a hard one. Find a bike that suits your appetite. I like cornering (and the sound of a V4). Straight line performance is not nearly as important to me. I like to keep my license....
On trackdays a well ridden NC30 can keep up with any of the modern supersports because it is light, nimble and docile. They will pass you on the straights only to be outbraked into the next corner :-)
I guess you have been riding for years to know how to take corners like that. I'm sosuprised that the bike didn't fly out under neth you. Yo, I was also wounding if its posible to take a turn going 45mph on a 90* turn?
please don't use the KHM term i don't under stand it. Please us in MPH. How fast where you going around those turns? it looked to me you where going very fast.
i just got a vfr 400 92 plate its an amazing bike .. u can throw the thing into corners so easy .... but im only 17 and have to have it restricted to 33bhp -.- i still get 120 mph from it though wich is sweet nice vid dude
oh man i just bought one but still haven't got the chance of riding it..im in the US my bike is at home in the Philippines...everytime i see this video i feel like I'm riding my vfr already love the speed man
You have to make one yourself....K&N never did a filter for the NC30. Just take the stock filter, remove the paper and fit a element of a suitable K&N filter in the stock plastic holder.
It is very easy and a common modification among NC30 owners. Mind you, it only works if set-up properly on a Dynojet! Otherwise it will only degrade power.
Also had one a couple of years ago. These bike's are still awesome. Pushed mine to 236km/h. My friend was riding next to me on his SRAD 750. Not bad for a 400
this is crispy. I have just bought (4 weeks ago) a NC30 '89 (black & red).
But when i get near the redline at top speed it won't go any further? kinda just stops no matter how hard i turn the throtle?
Also i was looking for an exhaust but none seem to be made for the VFR400, and was told you have to cut and weld the exhaust on... so does it matter what type of exhaust?
It's not supposed to go way past the redline. Topspeed is topspeed. Mine revved to 15.000 in 6th before the limiter kicked in.
If you have the 180 km/h speedo, it's limited in that as well. These are Japanese speedo's and they cut the ignition at 180 km/h (regardless of what gear you select). Easy to disconnect but I forgot how.
As for the exhaust. Mine was a customised GSX-R 750 alloy can. Only way to be sure if it works is fit the exhaust and do some dyno-runs to set it up properly.
There's not much between them performance and quality wise. You'll have to make a decision based on looks and sound.....I do not like inline fours so I'm biased.
Take either of them for a spin and take the one you like best.
hey PHAJH! i really like your videos! i own one of this vfr 400 too. i would like to ask you, can you please tell me where can i get this K&N filter, needels and jets? i would really appreciate your answer. and the exhaust that you have...is it custom made for this honda? because you said that it was from kawasaki 750? thnx! more vids like this!:D
oh my god i love the honda vfr400!! i cant wait till i can ride over here... in the uk... at 16 you can ride a 50cc moped/scooter, then at 17 you can take a motorcycle test... i want one of these beauties but to get it legal i might have to restrict it to 25bhp i think, oh well... amazing bike mate!! (nice ridin too!)
That's a cool vid and some good info on what I should do to mine when I can afford to do some upgrades as i've just got a lovely NC30 1991.Will post vids soon.
The 1991 model has the adjustable front forks, right? Mine was of 89 and the front is not adjustable except for preload. It worked ok once I got the forkoil right (12,5 weight) and airgap at 84mm. It was a pain to figure it out though LOL.
Rear shock of yours should be better too.
What colours are yours? I really liked the HRC coloured ones.
The HRC colours!.I'm loving every minute on it and can't wait for the summer-Well dry weather here in the UK LoL.Very comfy.Just uploaded a little clip but I work at a hospital so couldn't do a good sound check as it's VERY LOUD!!;)
nice work. glad to hear about the 'bulletproofness' of the engine. I got a nice NC24 a while ago with 20k km on it, so my fun is only just beginning! check my vids
Thats pretty cool, 220k out of a 400 is pretty damn good, i didn't think they would do that, Whats the power band like on it, does it hit hard? Or is it broad?
For a 400 it has a really broad powerband, especially compared to inline fours. It will really move (well...relatively speaking ofcourse LOL) from about 8.000 rpm onwards up to 14.500. But it will deliver usable pull from 4000 no problem. See the last part of the video.
Yeah I'm looking at getting one too. 68hp out of a 400 is awesome. As long as I can find one of these I'll buy it. How do they compare to the FZR400 though?
I rode a FZR400 and did not really like it engine-wise. The V4 is a lot stronger in lower revs. The FZR feels tiny and flimsy when compared to an NC30. The handling of a FZR is razorsharp, edgy. NC30 is more stable and feels like a bigger bike to me.
Oh by the way, my opinion on the FZR400 is purely personal. I did not intend to say it's a bad bike. A friend of mine had one for years and he really liked it. It just doesn't fit me like an NC30 does...
wow thats impressive for a 400... 220kmh is what 140 odd mph... got there fast!!! is your VFR standard. im thinking of downgrading and the little pocket rockets catch my eye :D
The bog-standard NC30 will hit 130 mph but will not rev to the redline in 6th. This one does, at about 137 indeed. It has a K&N airfilter, needles and jets but retains the stock filterbox. The exhaust is a roadlegal Bos alloy can (designed for an older type of GSX-R750 I think) on stock headers. The gearing is stock.
The carburation was set-up at a Dynojet center. Afterwards it was faster, the pickup from low revs improved a lot and...fuel consumption went down about 20%. That was the best money spent on a bike ever LOL
@PHAJH Hey man nice NC30. What did you have done to your carbs to improve low end power? I've got an NC35 and i've got some flat spots down low which I've made better but still not quite there.
@racefactory900 Hi, I gues the exhaust, the K&N filter and a Dynojet stage 2 kit all work together. This kit contains main jets and needles. Pick-up from low revs was improved dramatically, as was fuel consumption (went down by around 20% while kicking out a lot more power and torque!). The bike was setup at a professional Dynojet centre - worth every penny.
Ahhhhhh right!! thats impressive still. the accleration on the VFR was the best out of the 400's i believe even better than the CBR. do you still have the bike??
Unfortunately no. Did 50k km on it in the 8 years I had it. The last two years only did trackdays on it. It still ran like new, these engines are absolutely bulletproof. Sold it last year....
Hey, nice ride. I am planning to buy an 1987 VFR 400 NC24 (Rothmans). What do you think? It is in mint condition... what does it worth? Are these VFRs reliable? I've got a Yamaha FZ250 Phazer right now... cheers!
The NC24 is a fine machine no doubt. But...it's not a NC30. They are very different. Engine (and sound!), chassis, brakes and wheels of the NC24 are all of older design and not nearly as nice IMHO. The rides are completely different too. A NC24 is a lot cheaper, expect 1/2 the price of a NC30.
All VFR's are bullet-proof if you warm them up with care. They take cheap mineral oil no problem. The alloy of the chassis is very prone to weathering though.
sweet ride!! just brought 91 nc30 vfr400r sweetist 400 ever great sound awesome handling only downside is 18 inch rear wheel!! but cant have it all our way eh
i had a nc30 back in the day,im abit older now and got a gixxer k6 and R6, but i must say around tight corners the 400 rules. stay on 2 wheels if not then 1
1st gear takes you just over 100 km/h (!). It will not wheely very well though and "grand prix starts" will fry the clutch very easy. Once rolling it is a nice bike, the handling is absolutely amazing. And the sound.....oooooohhhhhhh ;-)
Great vid, NC30's rule, the only bikes that are better are the RC30 and RC45 :D I love mine (and its nice carbon Technical Sports pipe) and will never sell it, when I get my own place its going to live in the front room :)
You are absolutely right about the speedo error. It's probably closer to 210 km/h in reality. I feel no need to exagerate (sp?) as some others do. For a 400 it is very quick though.
The sound....well that's what Honda V4's are all about right? Especially the ones with the cranks configured like the NC30.
hello friend, i'm from the philippines and i really enjoyed watching you drive your bikke that fast. actually i tried it once and my biker friend swore i did a 220 kph, anyway i just tested it when i got from a dealer who goes to japan and bring them back here, might not be able to do anymore for bikes here are a premium, anyway drive save bro
Taking into account they're geared to do 205kph. 220+ is a damn fine achievement for a VFR400, not many sub 600cc 4-strokes with that kind of performance. Anyways, the black and grey NC30 is probably one of the best looking bikes ever.
RomeoEskobar, you obviously know what you're talking about. This one is on stock gearing and as you can see it hits the limiter in 6th. No stock NC30 will go faster and most never get to 15000 in 6th. I'm not claiming it is the fastest bike around, it's just pretty quick. More so around the corners - and that's what counts imho.
True about the corners, what you lose in the straights you gain in the corners when you're riding one of these. I heard that mounting RVF400 USD forks will allow you to change your line mid-corner a hell of a lot better, might want to keep an eye open for a binned RVF...
dont listen to that fag he probly couldnt turn a corner lmao yeah fastest ive been is 260 on a zx-12 it can go more but i lacked mental strength lol and 220 with 3 times less the CC is amazing
Is this a nasty V-4 engine with 60+ horsepower!!!!!!!!!!men I could kill myself for this bike

HOW Fast where you going around the 2seond turn at 32sec? if you can remenber.
topgun1544 2 years ago
The sharp turn at 0:32 will be around 40 mph, the next long sweeping corner onto the highway entering at 45 accelerating to 62.
Top speed is around 136 mph.
The exit of the highway at 1:55 approx 85 mph

Bro i want to ask u where i can K&N filter as i dont see on he Website do u know a specific one would fit ??
kamolia 2 years ago
You have to make one yourself....K&N never did a filter for the NC30. Just take the stock filter, remove the paper and fit a element of a suitable K&N filter in the stock plastic holder.
It is very easy and a common modification among NC30 owners. Mind you, it only works if set-up properly on a Dynojet! Otherwise it will only degrade power.
PHAJH 2 years ago
aye theyre fast, i got an nc23 an last time i took it out was with a mate on his vfr800 and we clocked 141mph next to each other.
doubleDNA 2 years ago
Also had one a couple of years ago. These bike's are still awesome. Pushed mine to 236km/h. My friend was riding next to me on his SRAD 750. Not bad for a 400

hey, i have an nc30 and i was wondering where you got your K & N air filter from as i can't seem to find them anywhere, oh and great vid btw!
Cheers!

Thank you :-)
Dynojet in the UK (do a Google search on "Dynojet UK") should stock them.
PHAJH 3 years ago
this is crispy. I have just bought (4 weeks ago) a NC30 '89 (black & red).
But when i get near the redline at top speed it won't go any further? kinda just stops no matter how hard i turn the throtle?
Also i was looking for an exhaust but none seem to be made for the VFR400, and was told you have to cut and weld the exhaust on... so does it matter what type of exhaust?
saacdogg 3 years ago
It's not supposed to go way past the redline. Topspeed is topspeed. Mine revved to 15.000 in 6th before the limiter kicked in.
If you have the 180 km/h speedo, it's limited in that as well. These are Japanese speedo's and they cut the ignition at 180 km/h (regardless of what gear you select). Easy to disconnect but I forgot how.
As for the exhaust. Mine was a customised GSX-R 750 alloy can. Only way to be sure if it works is fit the exhaust and do some dyno-runs to set it up properly.

hey i was wondering im stuck getting a 400 its either a kawasaki zxr400 or a vfr400 what ones better and what ones faster
macklot84 3 years ago
There's not much between them performance and quality wise. You'll have to make a decision based on looks and sound.....I do not like inline fours so I'm biased.
Take either of them for a spin and take the one you like best.
PHAJH 3 years ago
hey i was wondering im stuck between getting a vfr400 or a kawasaki zxr400 what is better and what one is faster
macklot84 3 years ago
How fast can this bike go?
gengnepal 3 years ago
The stock bike (well maintained) will do 130 mph / 210 km/h.
This one does about 137 mph / 220 km/h
PHAJH 3 years ago
Cool, thats pretty fast for a 19 year old 400...
Judaspriest1992 3 years ago
hey PHAJH! i really like your videos! i own one of this vfr 400 too. i would like to ask you, can you please tell me where can i get this K&N filter, needels and jets? i would really appreciate your answer. and the exhaust that you have...is it custom made for this honda? because you said that it was from kawasaki 750? thnx! more vids like this!:D

oh my god i love the honda vfr400!! i cant wait till i can ride over here... in the uk... at 16 you can ride a 50cc moped/scooter, then at 17 you can take a motorcycle test... i want one of these beauties but to get it legal i might have to restrict it to 25bhp i think, oh well... amazing bike mate!! (nice ridin too!)
jefferz01 4 years ago
When do you reach 17? You have to restrict a bike to 33bhp for 2years then after that can have it taken off.Good luck on your test!
MITOMAN125 4 years ago
That's a cool vid and some good info on what I should do to mine when I can afford to do some upgrades as i've just got a lovely NC30 1991.Will post vids soon.
MITOMAN125 4 years ago
Thank you ;-)
The 1991 model has the adjustable front forks, right? Mine was of 89 and the front is not adjustable except for preload. It worked ok once I got the forkoil right (12,5 weight) and airgap at 84mm. It was a pain to figure it out though LOL.
Rear shock of yours should be better too.
What colours are yours? I really liked the HRC coloured ones.
PHAJH 4 years ago
The HRC colours!.I'm loving every minute on it and can't wait for the summer-Well dry weather here in the UK LoL.Very comfy.Just uploaded a little clip but I work at a hospital so couldn't do a good sound check as it's VERY LOUD!!;)
MITOMAN125 4 years ago
nice work. glad to hear about the 'bulletproofness' of the engine. I got a nice NC24 a while ago with 20k km on it, so my fun is only just beginning! check my vids
tokyoscramble 4 years ago
Thats pretty cool, 220k out of a 400 is pretty damn good, i didn't think they would do that, Whats the power band like on it, does it hit hard? Or is it broad?
Jonner324 4 years ago
For a 400 it has a really broad powerband, especially compared to inline fours. It will really move (well...relatively speaking ofcourse LOL) from about 8.000 rpm onwards up to 14.500. But it will deliver usable pull from 4000 no problem. See the last part of the video.
PHAJH 4 years ago
Yeah I'm looking at getting one too. 68hp out of a 400 is awesome. As long as I can find one of these I'll buy it. How do they compare to the FZR400 though?
hofman101 4 years ago
I rode a FZR400 and did not really like it engine-wise. The V4 is a lot stronger in lower revs. The FZR feels tiny and flimsy when compared to an NC30. The handling of a FZR is razorsharp, edgy. NC30 is more stable and feels like a bigger bike to me.
PHAJH 4 years ago
Cool. I don't suppose you've ridden a CBR250? :D
hofman101 4 years ago
No, I haven't, I'm sorry. I liked the NSR250. And TZR250. And RG250Gamma. Smallest sports 4-stroke I tried are FZR and VFR400's.
The CBR400 should be a nice bike too, so I was told.
PHAJH 4 years ago
Oh by the way, my opinion on the FZR400 is purely personal. I did not intend to say it's a bad bike. A friend of mine had one for years and he really liked it. It just doesn't fit me like an NC30 does...
PHAJH 4 years ago
Okay, cool. Well I'm looking at an FZR400 for $2500... I'm not sure if that's a good price or not. It's pretty nice.
hofman101 4 years ago
wow thats impressive for a 400... 220kmh is what 140 odd mph... got there fast!!! is your VFR standard. im thinking of downgrading and the little pocket rockets catch my eye :D
AddersZX10 4 years ago
Hi there,
The bog-standard NC30 will hit 130 mph but will not rev to the redline in 6th. This one does, at about 137 indeed. It has a K&N airfilter, needles and jets but retains the stock filterbox. The exhaust is a roadlegal Bos alloy can (designed for an older type of GSX-R750 I think) on stock headers. The gearing is stock.
PHAJH 4 years ago
The carburation was set-up at a Dynojet center. Afterwards it was faster, the pickup from low revs improved a lot and...fuel consumption went down about 20%. That was the best money spent on a bike ever LOL
PHAJH 4 years ago
@PHAJH Hey man nice NC30. What did you have done to your carbs to improve low end power? I've got an NC35 and i've got some flat spots down low which I've made better but still not quite there.
racefactory900 9 months ago
@racefactory900 Hi, I gues the exhaust, the K&N filter and a Dynojet stage 2 kit all work together. This kit contains main jets and needles. Pick-up from low revs was improved dramatically, as was fuel consumption (went down by around 20% while kicking out a lot more power and torque!). The bike was setup at a professional Dynojet centre - worth every penny.
PHAJH 9 months ago
Ahhhhhh right!! thats impressive still. the accleration on the VFR was the best out of the 400's i believe even better than the CBR. do you still have the bike??
AddersZX10 4 years ago
Unfortunately no. Did 50k km on it in the 8 years I had it. The last two years only did trackdays on it. It still ran like new, these engines are absolutely bulletproof. Sold it last year....
PHAJH 4 years ago
Hey, nice ride. I am planning to buy an 1987 VFR 400 NC24 (Rothmans). What do you think? It is in mint condition... what does it worth? Are these VFRs reliable? I've got a Yamaha FZ250 Phazer right now... cheers!
tordenskrald 4 years ago
Hi,
The NC24 is a fine machine no doubt.
The alloy of the chassis is very prone to weathering though.

sweet ride!! just brought 91 nc30 vfr400r sweetist 400 ever great sound awesome handling only downside is 18 inch rear wheel!! but cant have it all our way eh

i had a nc30 back in the day,im abit older now and got a gixxer k6 and R6, but i must say around tight corners the 400 rules. stay on 2 wheels if not then 1

hi i`m chilean very fast your nc30!!!:D
how much in 1 gear top speed?
thanks!
chuskilla 4 years ago
1st gear takes you just over 100 km/h (!). It will not wheely very well though and "grand prix starts" will fry the clutch very easy. Once rolling it is a nice bike, the handling is absolutely amazing. And the sound.....oooooohhhhhhh ;-)
PHAJH 4 years ago
Great vid, NC30's rule, the only bikes that are better are the RC30 and RC45 :D I love mine (and its nice carbon Technical Sports pipe) and will never sell it, when I get my own place its going to live in the front room :)

You guys are aware of "speedometer error", right?
BTW, THANK YOU for not puting some dumba** soundtrack on the video!
Buddykitchen 4 years ago
You are absolutely right about the speedo error. It's probably closer to 210 km/h in reality. I feel no need to exagerate (sp?) as some others do. For a 400 it is very quick though.
The sound....well that's what Honda V4's are all about right? Especially the ones with the cranks configured like the NC30.
PHAJH 4 years ago
hello friend, i'm from the philippines and i really enjoyed watching you drive your bikke that fast. actually i tried it once and my biker friend swore i did a 220 kph, anyway i just tested it when i got from a dealer who goes to japan and bring them back here, might not be able to do anymore for bikes here are a premium, anyway drive save bro
nuj69 4 years ago
Some nice riding there ;)
shauncarlpope33 4 years ago
Taking into account they're geared to do 205kph. 220+ is a damn fine achievement for a VFR400, not many sub 600cc 4-strokes with that kind of performance. Anyways, the black and grey NC30 is probably one of the best looking bikes ever.
RomeoEskobar 4 years ago
RomeoEskobar, you obviously know what you're talking about. This one is on stock gearing and as you can see it hits the limiter in 6th. No stock NC30 will go faster and most never get to 15000 in 6th. I'm not claiming it is the fastest bike around, it's just pretty quick. More so around the corners - and that's what counts imho.
PHAJH 4 years ago
True about the corners, what you lose in the straights you gain in the corners when you're riding one of these. I heard that mounting RVF400 USD forks will allow you to change your line mid-corner a hell of a lot better, might want to keep an eye open for a binned RVF...
RomeoEskobar 4 years ago
Good video. Show some good skills on the corners there and 220km for a 400 is ace! Planning on getting a VFR in the near future. Have fun.
