This is proberly my favourite poem that we study at GCSE. I saw John Agard at poetry live this year are I thought that he was fantastic. It really helps to be able to listen to him read the poem as he puts real meaning into it with his voice. I would really recogmend poetry live to anyone who gets the chance whatever level you are working at. If you don't get the chance things like this on Youtube really do help!
He was wearing the exact same thing when I saw him today in Poetry Live :D He was so cute! He walked into the curtains thinking it was an exit and walked ot the back, and that wasn't the exit aswell. bless him
This poem is retarded. If I could speak to John Agard I would say; stop being such a whiney bitch, caste = culture, you're mixed race, right? Well I'm not saying you're half a person, you have two cultures, you have two halfs, two halfs = one whole, not one half, also you say listening with half of me ear well that's a quarter, since you have two ears.
@MercurialGaming i was going to write a massively long reply contradicting everything you just said but i cbf as i have so much hw to do concerning this poem so it looks like you've won the argument.. :]
i think poetry is not just about how it is performed but its message and john has a very good message and he uses this poem so well to hit it home. i am studying this poem for english GCSE and it is my favorite from all of the anthology.
your all giving really insightful reasons why you liked him... but when i saw him, i just like him because he was animated. and thats it. dont give a shit about the underlying message.. can he perform it well? thats the key to poetry.
i think this poem is really interesting - studying it in English
it's almost so friendly/lighthearted that it's spiteful.
i love how he compares half-caste to such simple things like the weather - drawing attention to how basic black and white is - only colours - and how childish it is to discriminate against them
I saw this man with a school trip a couple years ago in a poetry conference in Hull.
I respect the message in the poem but I also find the way it's written, etc. to have a comical value to it also. Especially the very last part of it, where he says:
AH RASS!!!

this poem stinks it is very stupid
antownz1 2 years ago
You obviously have no poetic intellect.
This poem speaks of the cultural differences in the world, and how hard it can be to have more than one ethnic background.
Please, go back to school, take part in English, and see the poem for it's message, and the words.
